Brodie: I was at the final concert by Paul McCartney in 2014, and learned that they were still giving public tours of the Stick for one more weekend. I managed to go on the tour given on the Saturday of that final weekend, wearing a Croix de Candlestick pin on my hat for that last visit. We were told that one of the security guards at the McCartney concert had pried the Bill Walsh Field plaque off the wall and stolen it. The week after my tour, demolition of the park began, so I was one of the very last members of the public to see the Stick.

Sad that guard stole the plaque. The park was basic and not the greatest, but I loved going there from the 60s to the 90s.

My dad has had 49er season tickets since 1977 so I was very fortunate to see many 49er and Giants games when I was a kid. I remember seeing O.J. Simpsons last game as a 49er, a trade I can still remember my dad criticizing because the Juice was no longer a great player but a running back with 2 bad knees. I think my favorite Candlestick memories were sitting next to dad during those huge storms in the early 80's and just loving it, our ponchos useless, but just having father/son time nothing better. After the game we would walk out to a flooded Candlestick parking lot, good times!!!

Great video! When I moved to the Bay in 2011, I would watch those 49er games and see those TV blimp shots of Candlestick. That had AURA

I am from Philadelphia, Pa and never made it out to see a game there but saw it on TV many times. It is nice you took all those pictures of the park to keep those memories and share them with us. The only time I did something similar was when one of our area horse race tracks, Garden State Park was closing and also going to be demolished. I did not get to see some of the behind the scenes areas like you but I did want to document the public areas before it was closed to keep the memories of the many times I went there.

July of 97 or 98, I went on a road trip from Seattle to Vegas and back home through LA then San Francisco, Oakland and Portland. I went to Dodger Stadium, Oakland Coliseum and Candlestick. I actually saw a day Giants game where McGwire homered for the Cards. That same day, we attended the A's versus Jay's night game. I really liked the vibe of Candlestick. I've lost the photos of Candlestick that I took back then, but i still have the negatives. I'll have to scan and save them.

As a Cowboys fan “The Catch” still gives me nightmares even today! 😂 But seriously, I’m sure both Cowboys and Niners fans can agree that those of us who remember, those who were lucky enough to see a game between both teams at The Stick, witnessed, imo, some of the greatest football games ever! What a great rivalry it was/is. I can’t believe I’m about to type this but, great video! I actually really enjoyed watching! 👍🏼

Just now seeing this...Great job Brodie! I still think about Candlestick Park all the time. Had season tickets from 2009-2013, and went to several games before that. It was a dump...but it was our dump. You literally could feel how special that place was.
Nothing like arriving to The Stick early on a Sunday morning and feeling the chill in the air from the water. And to this day, every time I smell burning charcoal I get instant Candlestick flashbacks.

The worker that was hanging on to the light stand recounted his story for the 30 For 30 special about that series and the earthquake.

The fact that it was reinforced (rebarred) concrete probably helped during the quake versus it being all steel. I wonder what would've happened IF it was all steel...I'm not a structural engineer, so if there is someone like that here, especially one with knowledge of earthquake effects on strctures....

Never been to the 'Stick, strongly dislike the 9ers, but I love content like this, seeing the sketchy elevator shaft to the press box, ancient training table and old mlb scoreboard was great. Would love to see a similar video of the Oakland Coliseum in the future if possible

      @JohnOdermott 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Yeah, those old venues had character, and each was unique. I lived in the SF Bay area in the late 1980s and went to a lot of baseball games at both the 'Stick and Oakland Alameda Stadium. It always struck me that the fan experience in Oakland was very family-friendly whereas the crowds at the 'Stick had an edge to them and more often than not a fight would break out somewhere in the grandstands. Complete opposite of the two cities' reputations.

Hey Brodie, I had a lot of fun memories at the Stick. I don't remember when my first game was, but I remember going to a lot of games from 1987-1994. My grandpa had season tickets in upper box 6, which looked almost directly down the right field line. Never caught a foul ball, but they came close. Somehow, my sister and I got to go down on the field before a game, as I recall it was in mid September 1989. I have a few 8x10s with some of my Giants heroes, Brett Butler, Robby Thompson, Matt Williams, and Kevin Mitchell. As we went to take a photo with Matt Williams, my sister blurted out, "WHERE'S BRETT BUTLER?!" How humiliating for us all. I was also there October 17, and for the other Giants home games that playoff year. Celebrating the NLCS after the 4-3 putout, Steve Bedrosian, Robby Thompson, Will Clark, wow, that was an incredible game and win. One of the highlights of games in that stadium.

I purchased that very stadium wall map shown at the 28:00 mark of the video as well as a couple of stadium seats back when they were selling off items from the stadium right before the stadium was demolished. Both the seats and that big map are now proudly displayed in a corner of my parents' home in Central California.

My family had 49ers season tickets from 1946-2013. I missed the Kezar days by a few years - the first year I was allowed to go to games was 1974 when I was 6 years old. I remember the tickets costing $17.50 and parking in the dirt lot was $5.00. I attended all but one 49ers home game from 1977 to 1986 (I missed the season finale of 1982 against the Rams (a loss) due to a sports injury and my dad would not let me go to the game on crutches). I was happy that my kids were able to attend a few games in 2010-2013 before it closed (we do not live in the Bay Area).
I also went to a lot of Giants games as a kid. I once missed out on a "Croix De Candlestick" when Jack Clark hit a game winning home run in the bottom of the 9th - the crowd booed him.
Raiders played at Kezar in 1960. They only played at Candlestick in 1961.
They put in the fake grass to try to save money; they swapped it out to try to help with O.J. Simpson's knees. It was the best thing O.J. ever did for the 49ers (and Giants).
I am in the famous "The Catch" photo from the back of the end zone. I am a little hard to make out, though ;)
It was a crap-hole, but I miss it.

My first game there was in 1965 Giants vs. Reds. I saw many more games there in the 60s to the 90s. I saw Mays, McCovey, Marichal, Gaylord Perry, both Bonds, Jack and Will Clark, and many more. 49ers of course Montana, Rice, Clark, Young and many others 70s to 80s then to hard to get a ticket. My dad passed in 94, I had moved away in 92 and I missed the final years there. When I saw video and pictures of it being torn down 😢 it was hard. Thanks ,John" Brodie, for this video.

"Theeere's a towering fly ball to deep left center. It's spinning around up there. Spinning. Spinning...Aaaand it drops foul underneath the right field pole."...I can't remember who made that call - might've been Jon Miller, I can't remember - but it reminded me of the one night that I was actually at a Giants game at The Stick. I was in those right field stands. Way underdressed, and freezing my tuchus off. If I had been dressed in mukluks, thermals, and an Arctic parka I still would've been cold. In August, as I remember...The one difference that I do remember between Candlestick and the Coliseum is how bright The Stick was, compared to how relatively gloomy the Coliseum was. Even at night the concourses were brightly lit at Candlestick, whereas you damn near needed a flashlight to get around in the Coliseum. To be honest they were both weird parks, as were most of those multipurpose stadia of the age. I spent a lot more time at Jack Murphy in San Diego with season tickets for San Diego State, and just like both of those Bay Area venues, that reinforced concrete at The Murph was really showing its age, and with bad plumbing to boot. I would've been onboard with the Chargers getting a new stadium, but with the "Gimme this and that" attitude by Spanos, and the fact that they literally wanted that "Convadium" gifted to them, with little to no real investment from them, I got to witness one of the first salvos of the Extortion Age in pro sports....Maybe do a video on what's supposed to happen with Candlestick Point? I doubt they spent all that demolition money just to leave a dirt field out there. Everything has been strange between there and Hunters Point for years...

I know y'all are Californian but constantly talking about how cold San Francisco is just makes y'all look like pussies. You're on the ocean, temperatures don't get as hot or as cold as inland, you don't get snow. Honestly it's probably more of a wind chill than cold because it's not like y'all have ever played in snow like teams who can actually mention the cold because they do get snow, slush, hail. People complain more about the cold in San Fran than Seattle and that tells me it's Californians can't take any form of "cold".

Good pics Brodie. I have seen both the Giants and the 49ers at Candlestick. I wonder if there will be the same nostalgia when the Coliseum gets demolished? I remember before the Bay Bridge World Series, ESPN had announced the Coliseum as the Best Ballpark in America, I suppose they have to include all but the Coliseum really was/is a nice bowl if you ignore the Al Davis addition.

The spirit of the 49ers and Candlestick is a very special vibration. It's really sad that the Niners couldn't work something out in San Francisco. The new place looks very corporate-and that corporate-first mentality is ruining a lot of things in this country. It's either that-or those of us who grew up in the 60s-80's were very lucky to grow up in a magical time.

Brodie, fun fact: My father and I started to go to 49ers games on a regular basis in the early 2000s... We got on the waiting list and got called to come pick our season ticket seats... Back then, they literally gave you a list of the seats available and let you walk around the stadium freely and sit in those seats to see what the view was like... Well when we showed up, we didnt know where to go and took a wrong turn and ended up in the 49ers locker room... Saw a plaque hanging up with their super bowls and another with the retired numbers... That was a fun day and a happy mistake...

Everybody says the Oakland Colo. was so much better before Mt. Davis. Of course that's true. But I also really loved Candlestick before it was enclosed for football. Maybe it was because I was a kid and the wind and cold didn't bother me. But there was a freshness to Candlestick in the 1960s. I remember that mountain Brodie mentions, some short cement tower down the right field line that looked like it belonged in an airport, the detached wooden bleachers in right field and the pressbox with the KSFO sign draped from it.

From my couch in Georgia, I watched lots of Braves and Falcons games in that stadium. Braves and Falcons were members of the western divisions in their 2 respective sports, which was crazy. It made for a lot of 10:35 PM first pitches from Candlestick. And lots of late Sunday afternoon losses for the Falcons out there. Braves commentators would always talk about how miserable it was in that stadium due to the wind and cold.

Fantastic video! I've been watching your channel for about a year and enjoy it a lot. Sorry about the A's and your departure from NBC. You will land on your feet--no doubt.
As a kid, I would watch Dodger road games at Candlestick on TV. After the game, the Dodgers would go up towards right field where the clubhouse was. But the Giants fans used to throw so much stuff at them that they had to walk inside of the foul line. Then Tommy Lasorda would swear like a sailor while talking to the sportswriters complaining about it :)
2 questions: is that future A's owner Walter Haas listed on the Candlestick plaque? And was that deceased 49ers owner related to A's/Yankees PR man Mickey Morabito?

MetLife Stadium floors me on a week by week basis. Hosting both the Jets and Giants home games, they have to personalize the place for each team in every nook and cranny. All the team stores including the flagship have to have their merchandise changed. Certain stuff in the concessions need to be changed like the souvenir cups for beer & soda. The teams rings of honor - changed. Last but not least the field itself - end zones and center plates - changed. I’m sure they change the whole field completely. Lots of detailed work for 16, 17 or 18 games a year. I’ve never been but I’m sure it’s now the same situation at SoFi Stadium too.

For my final game in attendance it was actually the final game. “The Pick at The Stick. I entered through the entertainment gate. Walked underneath and next to the scoreboard. Then to section 54 row 13. Got to see Dwight Clark one last time. Steve Perry and Boyz II Men made me cry.

When Candlestick was opened, I believe there were radiant heaters built into the concrete.

I remember when some concrete fell from a section at the renovated original Yankee Stadium. Then you had to wonder why the Yankees were adamant about getting the current stadium that opened in 2009. The Mets got a new stadium that opened the same year. The wear & tear wasn’t nearly as evident at Shea Stadium or just didn’t get the same attention prior to the building of Citi Field.

One thing may not know about about Candlestick is that back in 1974, the NASL was looking for locations throughout the Bay Area to put a new expansion team (the Earthquakes) as part of their West Coast expansion & actually toured Candlestick as part of that process. However when they toured it they weren't happy with the weather conditions especially the fog & the field dimensions for soccer. They also weren't happy with the fact that the Earthquakes would be sharing the stadium with the Giants & the 49ers. In the end the NASL decided to put the Earthquakes in San Jose so that the team could have decent facilities to play in granted Spartan Stadium wasn't great either but it was a lot better than Candlestick when it came to weather. Apart from one USMNT friendly played in the final year of Candlestick's existence in 2013, Candlestick Park did not host any other soccer matches throughout its history but it is interesting to learn that the Earthquakes almost called Candlestick home.

Seen many games there. My stepdad was a huge Giants fan and he'd take me to games early 70s to mid 80s. But I was a big A's fan and he'd take me to see them. He always commented how nice a park the Coliseum was compared to the Stick. Now 40 years later, the Giants are set and the A's are leaving😢

At least Candlestick was given a dignified death via the wrecking ball fairly quickly…to see it abandoned, overgrown, covered in graffiti, etc. would have been heartbreaking.

I went to a couple Giants games there in 95’ and sat in the bleachers(?) behind the warning track. Tickets were a couple of dollars. The pitcher on the opposing team came to the bleachers and tried to fight fans sitting near us because he was being heckled. True story.

They either need to develop a new sports venue that could be expanded to NFL standards if they abandon Levi Stadium earlier due to the early season heat. Or they need to build housing and mixed retail.

Weather aside, Candlestick was a great baseball stadium. When it was expanded to accommodate the 49ers, it turned into a giant kludge. A stadium that tries to accommodate both baseball and football/soccer doesn’t serve any sport well. That was true for all multipurpose stadia, not just Candlestick. It’s just as well that the 90s started the trend of sport-specific stadia. At least so-called “bad” parks like Tropicana Field and Levi’s Stadium provide better sight lines than the multipurpose places.

Still have my four " Croix De Candlestick" pins for extra inning night games somewhere with my assorted Giants souvenirs. Yes, Oracle Park is better overall, but games at the Stick had this odd " us against the world" vibe. But, progress must happen

Went only once as a tourist. August 20 2011. Preseason game vs Oakland Raiders. Was a total gong show. Drunk fans everywhere. Fights, shootings, and everyone on their worst behaviour. Wife had beer spilled all over her seat and the ushers didn't give a damn. And as a preseason game it wasn't even good football. Still have the order email, Upper reserve sideline 28 row 1.
