TRIGON AR01 - Taiwan's best road bike? 6 Month Review.

  • The Trigon AR01 is Trigon's latest and greatest bike. It has some standout features you won't find on other bikes. It's billed as an "all rounder" (That's what the AR stands for.) and I think it lives up to its name. It feels as happy in the mountains as on the flats. A great bike, but is it worth the price tag?
    Also: I didn't install those shift buttons all the way in, so they look a little out of place. That was my bad, not the design of the buttons. :)

    Great to see Trigon going strong after all these years. I bought one of their forks back in 2008/2009 for a touring bike that went over 28 countries (many multiple times). Sadly I was hit by a car and the frame it was married to was cracked but the fork survived. It now is the fork on my steel 'city' bike (it has drop bars and is pretty agressive).
    This bike looks absolutely amazing. The dimples should help with cross winds.

    Trigon carbon forks have been available already many years ago - even way back with one inch steerers as upgrades for steel frames. So to me, this is a household name - if they are indeed the same factory. However, If I was ready to lay out 9k for a bike, I think I would at least want to look at it in person and test ride it - maybe even in different sizes. This is where dealer networks come in. I don't think I'd spend that kind of money for a bike I've never touched to be shipped to me across the globe and just hope for the best should I be unhappy with it.

    Nice one, Joe. Beautiful bike and good to hear about its great ride quality but way too expensive, especially the frameset. Much more expensive than a Look, Time, or Scott frame and those brands have worldwide presence included in their price. And on the other hand is it 2500 usd better than Winspace?

    • @ChinaCycling
      @ChinaCycling  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      It's better, but "2500" better...? I mean, it depends what value money has to you. Is Dura Ace $1000 better than Ultegra? Some people will say yes, some will say no. If it's my money... probably not 2500 better...

    Bike looks really really good but 4k for a frameset from a relatively unknown brand is ridiculous. This is more than from a top line giant frame in retail. Where giant is since 20 years in world tour. Except last time where basically there was shortage of components and frames etc I don't know anyone who both top spec frameset/ bike and paid sticker price. Frameset price 4k plus tax and shipping from taiwan that is 5k in europe and in that price range you can buy all the road framesets in the world. For the whole bike it is a bit better priced but still this would be way better placed if 1k lower. Especially that they don't spend such money on marketing like big dogs. Looks really really good i would definitely like to try but if more like in seeka price range and not existing one. Actually this frameset is more expensive than the canyon where they sponsor the best cyclist in the world an already well known brand with a pro tour team.

  • @aarondcmedia9585

    $4k USD is pretty reasonable if it includes the handlebars. That's $6300 AUD.
    My Cervelo S3 frame was $4k AUD from Wiggle in 2009 - local Aussie prices were $8k for the same frame. It wasn't long before Cervelo geo-restricted sales, but I got lucky, clearly. I still race the S3 today, 14 years later. Have not changed a thing on it either - 7970 + HED Jet 6 wheels as configured by me at the time.
    Not keen on the wheels.

    Also in question is the timing. Right when the entire bike industry is going through the worst slump in years (if not decades). Here comes a new brand launch that wants to sell $9000 bikes. I was in Taiwan this summer and saw a company (supposedly an OEM to a well known western brand) had high profile product launch of a bike trainer. I don’t think the specs are particularly high end but the price is well over US 1K. There is also a strange phenomenon that bike products made in Taiwan often sell at higher prices than in the US.

    I appreciate the video very much.With all respect to the Mfg,I know the high cost of material.labour,etc,etc.If they continue to pretend this kind of money for a " Bike " pretty soon the bottom will drop in the bike industry.Let me give an example: Model aeroplanes.I competed with model aeroplanes.While we used piston engines,the price were affordable to everyone,as soon as the electric motors arrived,price started to go up.Over the course of 2/3 years prices went out of controll like what is happening to road bikes now.The high price of airplanes literally killed the hobby of racing.If the bike Mfg follow what happen in the airplane hobby it will kill this sector in 2/3 years.There is no way I am going to spend 7 thousand and up for a bike,when for that kind of money you can buy a Ducati that will do 300km per hour with all the electronic you ever want.Best Regards

    Nice bike, don't like the look of the wheels but it's ok with a normal wheelset, but ouch, that price tag is steeeeeep. You can have a top of the range 760g Giant TCR SL frames for 3500 euros. That's another Taiwanese brand with an affirmed name and a good reputation. How could a newcomer to the market start at a higher price point than its more famous competitors? That's a crazy, or it's best say foolish, marketing strategy. I can understand they aim to differentiate themselves from the "Chinese cheap frames" but they're not in a position to be on par with western brands yet.

    • @hmcps89
      @hmcps89 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They are absolutely allowed to be on par with western brands because they have lots of experience building the OEM brands. Its a high quality build up, if you compare the price tag to a comparative bike, its on par if not a bit cheaper than. Its a bigger value for your money.

    These brands are forgetting the impact that resale value has on the RRP and subsequently the buyers choice. If I buy this new I will lose a lot of money on resale because the brand is not a legacy or big brand. Where as if I by a (god forbid) SL8 my resale value will be stable for years to come. Do you believe this is a factor when they are pricing their products or are we too far down the inflated value = prestige and potential profit consumerism rabbit hole?

    Great analysis of the bicycle, and very unbiased. Looks like a sweet ride. Trigon has been a leader in the carbon world for years.

    It's tough to explain clear differences between a $14,000 and a $9,000 bicycle as you noted. This fuzziness in justification highlights a problem with the value each model offers. While it's okay for companies to make money, the struggle to explain why these bikes cost so much suggests something isn't quite right in the industry.
    It seems like we're moving away from making decisions based on straightforward reasons. When you can get a car or a decent motorcycle for the same price, it makes you question whether these bikes are really worth it. It's a bigger issue about how the industry sets these high prices and how consumers decide what's worth their money.

    • @ChinaCycling
      @ChinaCycling  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think the problem is, when you buy an SWORKS, you're litterally buying "the best bike in the world" (or at least, lets say within 10% of the best bike in teh world.) whereas to buy "the best car in the world" would cost millions... yet most people buy cars that cost thousands. So, people buying bikes need to stop trying to ride 'the best in the world' and learn to settle for mediocre.

      Love Specialized but they've been messing up as of late, started when they discontinued the Venge, now I think riders are looking into Chinese brands to fill the gap and save some change until they bring the Venge back, but if the Chinese bikes are nice they may win over new lifetime customers, but they need to stay competitive about they're pricing to pull riders over from legacy brands

    • @amdeichgescheitert5779
      @amdeichgescheitert5779 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @mmurmurjohnson2368 Reagrding Specialized I totally disagree. Expensive, yes but still among the top tree bike manufacturer's
      But don't think this is the place to discuss Specialized or if you prefer established brand A or B as well as you think A or B is overpriced or not . Currently the high end/high price sector of well established brands is one of the few segments in the market that still sells.
      But this here is about the Trigon. So discuss the Trigon!!
      Comparing Trigons pricing to Specialized was just an example. I could have also compared it to Treks or BMCs, Cervelos, etc . ....pricing. Those are all highly admired and established brands in the market. At this point Trigon, even when the (ride) quality of this bike is on par or better, compared to the established brands will have trouble, because of that pricing and not being established in the market..

    • @mmurmurjohnson2368
      @mmurmurjohnson2368 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @amdeichgescheitert5779 No doubt, I own and love Specialized, but that's my point, only mostly seasoned dedicated riders know and ride these bikes and there're only a handful of us thus the high prices, but they're starting now to kill the golden goose audience as well as failing to bring in new riders, a critical error that in the end will injure both brands and riders alike as you're seeing in the industry now. And now brands like Trigon are trying to enter the already injured market at the same price points with an albeit very nice bike, but not a strategically sound decision. I'd just go cop a Winspace and call it a day.
      A better bike is not the problem right now, a lack of a sustainable amount of riders is, often times due to cost constraints, putting the sport in the domain of eqestrianism or yachting is not sustainable at bike industry margins no matter how nice the Trigon, and it is nice, now price it down to a place where I'll actually spot riders on the road with it and make me consider it over coping a reasonably priced Madone and win

      About a buck fiddy. Haha. Nah, I'm not 100% sure, looks like 15-20mm? Don't know if they include it with their stack figures though. Some frames do, some don't...

    Trigon, I though this brands went bust, I seen it like once in my local scene when I started cycling in 2010, it was a very coll bike but after that, never again. To think that a relatively unknown brand selling a frame at 4k is literally 狮子开大口

  • @mmurmurjohnson2368

    Nice, but companies need to come back to reality on pricing, how're they gonna bring new riders into the sport at 9k, sight unseen, and no demo? 1 to 2k average with a 5k ceiling is a sweet spot and the 1k bikes should be easily upgradable. Get folk into actually riding, they'll probably cop multiple bikes and cinvince others to get into cycling

    I would never, and I repeat never spend that much money on a bike. If I won the lottery and had that kind of money, I would probably still not spend that much money on a bike. But if I ever did, why would I buy a Chinese bike? I mean, I'm a big fan of Chinese bikes and Chinese wheels and other components, but if I'm going to overspend, and yes, anything over $3,000 is overspending, I would buy a Western brand so that I could get the immediate service from a local bike shop where I bought the bike. It makes no sense to spend that kind of money on a bike and if I have a warranty issue, I have to send parts to China, wait for them to send parts back from China, just no. So please, let's get back to the reason I watch this channel which is AFFORDABLE Chinese bikes and bike parts.
