This book is my figurative Zenith in Goosebumps. It’s my favorite book ever, of all time in the franchise. There’s a multitude of factors but I’ll start with the cover. Pretty iconic cover and memorable. Seeing a werewolf skin tucked into a suitcase as a kid creeped me out because I was so afraid of Werewolves, it caught my attention immediately. Not the best cover ever, but it works and it’s effective. Next, the premise. A boy having to stay with his aunt and uncle as a destination type of story helped establish serious atmosphere to the book. The description of the surrounding area, how isolated it could feel, how ominous the woods were were incredibly effective. Down to the plot, a kid has to spend Halloween with his aunt and uncle who may or may not be wearing werewolves and the tension you can cut with a knife in the story. It never progresses or sets up anything additional, it’s just a from start to finish type of book, which I think helps the book out. The main character Alex is written way above average for Goosebumps, he has sympathy, he has wit, he has charm. Rarely you get a character with all three attributes. The concept of the werewolves is so unique I can’t describe how much I love the idea behind Werewolf Skin. I think the Halloween setting in the book is more of a theming thing than a plot driver as some other Halloween books, but I get that late august-October vibe everytime I’ve ever read it. So many scenes in this book have stuck with me, that I compare every book I read to it. And for that, it’s in my top 5 probably permanently. There’s been books that are willing to go dark as it did, there’s books that have come close to replicating what this book was able to do for me. But if I had 1 goosebumps book I think that is perfectly tailored for everything I wish for in a goosebumps book, it’s this book. And the fact it shatters the expectations I even have for a goosebumps book, elevates even higher for me. The ending has some controversy behind it. Some people think there’s a plot hole going on and such. But to be fair, the ending provides the shock and is not too fair out of the realm of possibility even if the real villain wasn’t set up properly to have this revealed about them. I’d still give it a 5/5. Nothing I would deduct anything on. I shed the expectation of a Halloween book the 2nd and 3rd time I’ve read it. It used to be like lower on my love like top 10 favorites but overtime it grew to become my favorite. I think it will grow you more Michael. Great review, god bless you! (I KNOW I HAVENT UPLOADED MY REVIEWS IN A FEW DAYS BUT I GOT 6 VIDEOS SLATED FOR TODAY/OVER NEXT 2-3 DAYS IVE JUST BEEN SUPER BUSY)
For some reason, when I did my reread of this book last year, I didn't love it quite as much as I remember from when I was younger. I prefer Fever Swamp, but I still think this is a great book and one of the best from OG62. Not sure what brought it down for me I guess I'll have to reread it again for the ranking lol
@@Monsterblood it’s definitely top 10 OG 62 hands down. I can see how it’s not for everyone or how someone doesn’t feel that it’s perfect, I’m in the same boat for A Night In Terror Tower. A lot of praise from almost everyone but for me it never hit me where I thought it would. Werewolf Skin grew on me more and more overtime. I reread it for a podcast not too long ago and remembered why I loved it and declares it my favorite immediately because I realized how much the story still resonates in the series and hasn’t become outdated or anything. It’s still one of the best books, in my opinion at least!
This is one of my favorite Goosebumps books. Alex is one my favorite Goosebumps protagonists and it definitely kicks The Werewolf of Fever Swamp to the curb. One thing I didn’t like was the twist at the end.
I have that book along with 60 of the 62 original Goosebumps books by R.L. Stine. That book I got came with a werewolf mask inside, as it says on the front cover of the one I got. The only two Goosebumps books I'm after are "I Live in Your Basement" and "Monster Blood IV (4)."
This one is pretty solid, I think I may have either read it prior to Fever Swamp or at least got in my collection more. I've read it more because it's so better. Taking that aside, it is a solid creative take on a Werewolf story, with the skins and all that. It offers more werewolf action and does a darker tone pretty well. Back in the day, I straight up loved it. Upon re-reading, It's pretty good but for some reason I don't like it. It might because as solid as it is, in terms of ideas and such, it is on the bland end with the most interesting ideas not coming in until later. I don't know, but either way it is a very solid good one. I also kinda like the twist, it's a good shock moment if it may not be perfectly logically lol. The orginal title was "I want to be a werewolf for Halloween". This title is better. The episode is...eh, not as good. Werewolf In the living room is a mixed bag, kind of a mess.
This is one of the books that I heard was good. Thanks for reviewing this and I really hope you guys do another marathon soon so I can join! Could the 4 of us possibly do some kind of Series 2000 marathon soon? I ordered Revenge R Us today and should get it by June 5. God bless Michael!
In my opinion,it pass werewolf of fever swamp by light years Due to it being more interesting then a standard "who is the werewolf" plot we see a lot of time.it original, scary, and it flow perfectly to me
Werewolf Skin is definitely one of my favorites. I really enjoyed the dark elements of the story. Great twists & turns. The ending was very satisfying as well. Of course the cover art is beautiful. :) anyway great review bro 👍🏼
Great review! Looking forward to the Series 2000 reviews! I love this book, though not quite as much as when I was younger. Still, one of my favorites from OG62... Need to reread it again for this ranking. Personally, I think Fever Swamp is a bit more solid overall, but this one is more creative and fun
Okay commenting on this one. Firstly Becuase I DO NOT a have this book in my collection. And thank you for telling me it’s a Halloween book, maybe I’ll try to get this in by October. And when you say it’s so good..means I’ll have to read it. Second comment is that I just finished the book How I learned to fly- review, was NOT scary AT all. :) I actually enjoyed this story, even not being scary. There was a point in the book where scientists are introduced and that in itself if real FEAR but it was not scary. How I learn to fly was a book I didn’t really care to read ( and maybe your mindset is the same, seeing you haven’t reviewed it yet LOL) but it was one of those adventure books…. And since you haven’t reviewed that book yet… just leaving my comment here :) lol 😆
Pretty good video I really loved the book and how dark it was from the book. I find the werewolf mask inside the book which cool also I could see why they didn’t re- release the book. I got really lucky with this book find and I got the mask inside.

Agreed, man! I want to buy a fresh one, someday, but they’re pricey lol. Such a wonderful book!
