My uncle who served on the ship gave me the original captain's helmet from the HMCS Haida, it had a shrapnel mark near the top that curved in about a 1/4 inch and out again like a glancing blow. It also had 2 white horizontal bars and upside down U at the front, too bad my father gave it away or I'd donate it.
It was only visiting, I'm not a fan of Hamilton but where it was parked in Toronto was causing wear and tear on its hull from the stagnant water being beaten against it by the rocks and tide. It's actually scheduled for maintenance later this year
@ninjahistory it's been damaged heavily at least three times sometime by the enemy sometime by their own ships, sometimes by their own shells exploding prematurely in the gun (thats how Haida lost the two men that it lost) considerign when the Athabaskan went down the torps that sunk her past Haida by a margin of 50 feet...and they were in the middle (quite literally) of an enemy minefield so yea lots happened
I visited the ship when I was 10 while it was docked at Ontario Place. Somehow I got separated from the rest of the group. I took a look into the Medical Officers room and from that point on I got the vibe of someone constantly watching me.
Words of William A. Hughes (Cdn. Rear Admiral [Retired]): Served aboard Haida as Acting Sub-Lieutenant, summer, 1948. Lived in a small mess below the Quarter Deck. Not good at high speed.
@oliverisstupid...agreed; and i'm lucky enough to live in the City that it's now berthed (Hamilton Ontario Canada).....i have a book on the Haida and i love reading it :)
I live in Hamilton and love this city to bits. But the last time I went to the bay front it looked like shit. Not to mention the downfall of our down town, and how much of a contaminated shit hole the bay is. I hate to say this but I think she was better off staying in Toronto where all the tourism is.
