I bought a Jing An factory Type 56 with an under-folding triangular bayonet and fixed stock. The furniture was abused and dented. After sanding it well I used a Cherry stain, the wood was refurbished nicely and I polished the bolt carrier. It was imported by a California company that sold many of them to Hollywood film companies. This one was evidently used as a prop gun but still had a perfect bore. I sold it when I liquidated my gun collection to buy a house.
My First AK was a 5.56X45 Chinese BWK 92 - the thumb hole stock version of the Type 84. I found along the way that Galil 5.56 Bolts work in the 5.56 series Chinese Rifles, and purchased one for my own rifle. The Metal Mags for these Rifles are now extremely expensive, however the Green Polymer Polish Beryl Mags in 5.56 will fit in and work with them, as they do with mine.
Ah, the 80's... There's yet to be anything quite like the 80's & there probably never will be again. Magnificent treasure that you have [or not] there, sir!
I worked for Sile in NYC at the time they were importing them. They came with 3 mags, a bayonet, lube bottle and sling in a cardboard box. We had dozens of them. Downfolders too. I think they sold for $249.95.
Have this same rifle and have modernized, keeping front end wood. Shoot it all the time and is an awesome gun with zero malfunctions. Mine came with Chinese flatback mag, chrome follower and also use Xtech mags with bolt hold open follower, no feeding issues. Great rifle for sure.
The Chinese didn’t get AKM schematics because of the Sino Soviet split occurring in the late 50s and early 60s that led to the breaking of the alliance between Maos China and Soviet Russia
I have 3 of these, 2 milled and one stamped, the stamped type 56 has probly around 30k of rounds through her, the barrel rifling is almost gone but she still works!
My dad has a norinco 84s. Looks just like your father's except its 5.56. Magazines are stupid expensive because they were proprietary. Beautiful weapon. Has a habit of slam firing when shooting commercial .223.
I used to own a sile ny norinco 56s-1 ak47 sporter underfolder. I hawked it like a fool. Recently i came up on a mak90 slant cut. Awesome rifle! Im actually in the process of installing a jmac slant cut adapter, but i need to trim off a quarter inch of material in order to get a decent fit being the slant cut was poorly cut . But yeah norinco rifles are great no matter what really.
I have a brand new Zastava M70 version. It's a tank. Chromed barrel, bolt hold open deal, and the the gun itself is 1.5 millimeters thick instead of 1.0 millimeter. It's Serbian or Yugoslavian made. Nice gun.
I had several Norinco and Polytech AK's in the 1990's. They were "ok". The Polytech Legend is the one I probably held on to-- since they sell for crazy money now.
I have one I bought several years ago that was road hard. For that reason I don’t mind shooting it. When I bought it it was dirty and looked like it had never been cleaned. It’s the most accurate one I have and has a lot of rounds through it.
This was my first mag fed rifle back in the late 80's. Sold it years later due to needing money and regret it to this day!! I had bakelite mags and slab side mags that I bought for 10 bucks a piece and sold them with the rifle.
Too afraid to prove whether they are durable/reliable. If I was afraid to find out my precious hybrid (import) (not a true import with 922 parts in/on it) rifle was not as good as hyped to be...I would refuse to shoot it as well.
That is an inaccurate analogy. The reason I’m not shooting it is because, as mentioned in the video, the sentimental value of it being my dad’s first AK, it’s still NIB, and has all the accessories that I don’t want to degrade thru use. Now, had I said the same thing about my Jim Fuller AK-74, then sure I’d agree with that but ultimately you kinda missed the point of the video.
Whether it's a pre Ban Norinco or Polytech or a Mak 90, the Chinese AK is a classic. It's my first choice in an AK. I think the Type 56, with minor updates, is the epitome of the modern infantry weapon even today. I prefer the milled receiver variant, but the stamped Chinese AK is an excellent weapon. Why milled? If you watch a slow motion video of AKMs with 1mm receivers firing in full auto you'll notice pronounced barrel flip. This isn't as noticeable with 1.5mm receivers and Chinese stamped carbines tend to be pretty solid. But with milled receiver guns this is virtually non existent. This barrel flip adversely affects accuracy, even in semi automatic. You can't do the AK design too crudely or *on the cheap" and hope for more than 3 - 5 MOA. That's why I totally dismiss 1mm receiver AKs, wherever manufactured, in 7.62x39 (5.56N & 5.45 aren't as affected by barrel flip but they're unsatisfactory, anemic cartridges). Thus, I choose milled receiver AKs, even if it means an extra kilo. 1.5mm AKMs are a second choice. In real terms that means Chinese, Bulgarian, VEPRs and Yugo AKs. The only other consideration would be milled Valmets or a Galil in 7.62x39. Maybe CIA will get its BFT and milled AKs in spec and reliable one day, but that's not an option for me as is. Make mine a milled Mak90 I can somewhat refang. I'll deal with the slant cut receiver without a tear.
Golden state arms was one of the very first they were usually 416 poly tech guns but won't be marked polytech. Golden state arms was a importer in California of all places.
Sorry....deleted my comment by mistake instead of editing. Yes, we have loads of Norinco Type 56 AK's in South Africa. Prices have gone through the roof over the last 5 years due to the demand. SAIGA's as well, they come in batches. I picked up the SAIGA MK03 5.56 102 for close to 700 US (converted from rands) 4 years ago, they too have a dbl if not more increase in price.
I had the exact same norinco. I think I paid all of $350 for it. Then I fell on hard times and had to sell it to make a house payment. I wish I still had it. But i do have a saiga AK now so that kind of makes up for it.
How sad that this rifle will never be taken to the range and do what it was meant to do and be shot. Instead it will hide in a box, never being seen or used. I really do not understand why people do this with guns and cars. When you die, you cannot take them with you. You are not going to get rich and retire off selling this gun some day. They were manufactured to be used. What a shame. I take my underfolder Norinco 56s to the range all the time. I've modified it to my taste and I use it and have fun. Shot tons through it and it still looks awesome as the day I got it. I also modified and take my car to the track. Life is short. Enjoy it. The box was meant to be thrown away so you can go make memories.
The Sino-Soviet relations already soured around the early 60s when the AKM is still fresh, that's why the Chinese didn't got the TDP for the AKM. I've read from some source from some Chinese forums that I stumbled upon some years ago (which is unfortunately not existed by now by the ever changing internet landscape over there), that the cheif engineering team was able to get some first hand experience on some AKMs when they visited Albania and use that inspiration to kinda came out with their own stamped receiver.
If it’s a heirloom and will never be sold I’m not sure why you wouldn’t shoot it or open it. Kinda weird hearing you say that was the gun that got you into guns but that guns never been fired? The guns I grew up that got me into firearms were damn near worn out. Never replace memories of actually shooting those guns with my dad, with something in a box that’s never been fired. Either way cool gun.
My dad was a collector and actually shooting guns was a little bit of a rare affair. I told myself that if I owned a gun I’d shoot it. However, this is NOT my rifle yet, technically. So, for now, it stays in the box.

Norincos rifles are huge in Europe and in south africa. They are good for the price. I have one i'm busy licensing. My dad has the Saiga Ak 47, the rolls royce of ak's, but these norinco's are still good. Just dont buy the underfolding stock version as they arent so mod friendly.
If you really don’t know, the reason why the Soviet Union didn’t give the Akm blueprint to China is because of the sino-Soviet split, after stalins death, the Soviet Union became revisionist and China was still a pure communist country until after maos death. Which is why you start seeing the United States and the Soviet Union become more warm to eachother, but the United States still hated China until Richard Nixon visted China then China started becoming neoliberal because of deng xiao ping.
HATE TO BURST YOUR BUBBLE, BUT YOURS IS NOT VALUABLE BECAUSE IT DOES NOT HAVE THE FIRST SERIES IMPORT WHICH HAD THE 'TRI BLADE" BAYONET!!! NORICO is the CCP OWNED NORthern Industral COmpany that MAKES ALL Commie Chinese rifles and small Arms, NOT AN EXPORTER! The importer was an American company! I also have one of these, with the Tri Blade Bayonet which indicates it is an Early one, since the ATF Stopped allowing import until NORICO REMOVED TH E BAYONET AND THE LUG ASSEMBLY!

I really appreciate the education! Thanks!
The value comes from the memories that were made with my family. But the same one is online for $2350 so there's that too
