Love them or hate them, you gotta give the Stooges their props. They went through SO much on screen and off screen to entertain the viewers, and they always succeeded! Let the record speak for itself. 😁 Great video Rick, looking forward to the next one!
Grew up watching these guys. Learned how to read by reading the credits. I'm 67. These guys gave their all for these shorts they made. Very hard workers each one of them.
It’s one thing to love these guys when you were a kid, but you come to realize how truly great they were by the fact we still love them and maybe even more so as adults! They were brilliant. Comedic timing that was unmatched. Though they never got the credit or fame they deserved while they were alive, they never failed to give it their all every time they stepped in front of a camera or their fans. The Three Stooges forever…..
My favorite is the one where an attractive woman was taking advantage of all three. Her line “ I knew you were coming so I baked a cake” used on each stooge was hilarious. My siblings enjoy the stooges every Saturday night before Svengoolie. 😊
Oddly enough I watched a few Stooges shorts on TH-cam yesterday and this was one of them. I think it came out good but the funniest part was the horse costume they used. It looked like it had been through the mill and back. Great video Rick!
It’s always interesting to hear about some of the accidents that occurred during the making of shorts like this. Keep up the great work Rick, I hope you’re doing well. Take care!
Great video. I have to watch this one again. It’s been a while since I seen it. I enjoy most of their shorts. Of course some are better than others. But I learned something with this video. Thanks.
I remember this film for the "Wild Man" climbing the rope ladder to get Curly. I was so scared for him. My wife gave me a scrape book all about the Three Stooges for father's day one yr. Best gift ever.
Liked & subscribed. Thanks for the cool insider info. I think this is a great episode. The entire opening sequence with the poster is absolutely hilarious. And there is a very moving & compelling transition scene (right b4 the boys start selling tickets) in which happy, excited crowds are shown walking around. For me, this almost reaches Frank Capra quality. It was only a few years prior to the filming of this short that families in the US were struggling to rise up from the Great Depression. To see people having fun at the circus was gratifying and nicely depicted here! 🙂
I do appreciate what those guys went through course it's almost thankless for these shows. But the horse costume gag is their most hilarious moment of all for me in this episode.
The Three Stooges may have had some power over film directors, but they had no say over their salaries. Over the 24 years they made shorts for Columbia, they NEVER got a raise in pay - not even once.
I love all the Stooge shorts including this one, I will say however it is not as great as “ Men in Black “ or some of the other top shorts. Thanks Rick great video as usual 👍
I'm curious about that movie poster that they're covering up in that one scene. I can't find any movie that exists with that title under what looks like Douglas Fairbanks Jr.'s filmography, and that's the only name I recognize.
Chester Conklin is in this film. He was a big star with Max Sennett and the Keystone Cops in the teens. He worked pretty consistently until the '60s. So on that alone it's worth watching.
0:16 Gosh, Rick, I'm *already* learning! In by 60+ years, I've always known the word to to be spelled "twerp" with an rather an an i. (Obviously, THIS short either escaped me or was somehow forgotten.) "Nineg" means "cultural education enhancement."

It's funny, as a kid I watched them every day after school and I never laughed. But as a grownup, suddenly they got very funny. Same thing with reruns of "Green Acres". As a kid I just watched them, and they didn't get funny until I was almost 30, when I found them hysterical.
Love the Three Stooges, especially the ones with Curly. BUT!!! It would of been nice to see live action in this video instead of photo stills. What Happened!!! Were you a 'victim of circumstance' ??? 🙈🙉🙊
I'm still waiting for the stooge's movie that is a serious movie about their lives. They lived amazing and tragic lives and I think it really needs to be a story that's told.
Actually, there was a TV movie made in 2000 called "The Three Stooges". It was broadcast by ABC but I don't know where it exists these days. I thought it did a very good job at showing them in Hollywood and their normal lives. I knew Curly (Jerome "Babe" Howard) died of a stroke but it made me cry when I saw Moe Howard ask him to sign a release for his likeness to continue in the films while in his hospital bed. It felt like Moe was telling him he was going to die. I think it didn't get very good reviews which might be why it's in Limbo. But if you can dig it up, I hope that you enjoy it. Peace.
I am actually impressed the Stooges were a big enough draw that the studio actually *conceded* when they said they'll NOT work with a certain director again! Studios were NOT famous for giving a rip back then but they heeded the Stooges! Hekka yeah!
Given that this particular director (a) had a drinking problem (b) worked too slowly and (c) was costing the studio a LOT of money, acceding to the Stooges request to never work with Edwards again seems like a no-brainer.
@@radicalross7700When he said drinking problem, I thought he was referring to Curly, since he was going out to nightclubs after filming wrapped, and drinking heavily into the wee hours of the morning, always stumbling into the studio, obviously hungover.

@@ricknineg The Three Stooges nearly made a comeback in 1970 with a tv movie Kooks Tour which was also planned to be a tv seres but sadly before filming was completed Larry Fine suffered severe stroke paralizing the left side of his body. When it was made clear that Fine was not expected to recovery fully, from the stroke the production was cancelled and the movie shelved. 🎥👶😢🙏
Moe was badly injured in the scene where Curly & Larry pull Moe through the wall they are fixing up a mansion and pull on a phone wire that Moe is holding onto and a very heavy thick wood beam that was part of the wall interior set crashes down onto Moe's head and neck and you can see how much it hurt him they kept it in the scene for laughs but it could have easily killed him he also got badly hurt when a table collapsed after Curly sawed through it Moe broke two ribs when that happened he was standing on the table and Curly & Larry saw through it.
Personally, I'm not a fan of how this short played out. If the boys had chosen jail time over working the circus, it would've worked in footage from "So Long Mr. Chumps," but their excuse for how they know Pomeroy's name is "We heard you're a great escape artist." Then as they escape, they go back in the cage, and the Warden would say "Take em to solitary!"
I don't know what is is about the Stooges but I have never been a big fan. This is funny because I am a huge fan of Laurel and Hardy and Lewis and Martin. I think it could be that Moe Howard always came across to me as a bully.
...sorry, but Edwards did direct at least one other Stooges short - see "Where the Pest Begins" (1945 with Shemp). Regarding Edwards being a slow director, Columbia was known for turning out shorts for all of their series with just two or three days of shooting, so if Edwards was in fact "slow", he would have been fired from the lot, which did not happen. Edwards (who directed some 180 films in his career) would continue to direct for Columbia's other series - notably Harry Langdon, Andy Clyde and Hugh Herbert - almost continuously until basically all of Columbia's short film series came to an end around 1946. The Stooges series continued into the '50s because they were popular and because their films were so cheap and quick to produce - many of the later 1950s ones shot in a single day - they were basically guaranteed to bring in a continuous and steady profit. This is also likely the reason the Stooges never got a raise after all those years - Columbia was nothing if not ridiculously cheap with the talent. Regarding Edwards' drinking, sadly, many in Hollywood at that time had serious alcohol problems including many in the Columbia Shorts department - including Charley Chase, Buster Keaton and Curly himself. Lastly continuity problems such as the changed shirts were constant throughout Columbia's short films - mostly due to the insanely tight schedules and low budgets. If a mistake happened, just keep going and hope nobody would notice - and most times audiences didn't.
Don't forget about Ted Healy. He was another one who couldn't stay away from the booze. His heavy drinking and cruel practical jokes (especially directed toward Shemp), is the reason why he left the act to go solo.
I like Rick's channel and I'm giving him support by viewing every video whether i like the subject or not. The Three Stooges is the only show that I don't care for. Maybe it's too old for my taste. I hope you have a wonderful day.
It was a good episode, but the director was a duse-- bag. The Boys had to put up with a lot of cruds from him, just to allow him to make money on the Boys. The Boys had such a physical comedy history, they did get hurt many times, but still rocked the screen.
Love Curly's line to the bearded lady "You remind me of a girl I knew in Detroit, but you look more like her stepfather"
Watching the Stooges since I can remember. I'm 68 years old and still laugh like a kid when I see them to this day. Laughter the best medicine
