      DGM is the best and safest thing to use for palladium recovery. There is also the formate method, but that requires close monitoring of the pH, as the reaction only works in a fairly narrow pH range.
      DGM just works the best.
      Platinum can be a major pain to purify. Best thing to do seems to be to drop silver with HCl or sodium chloride, then drop palladium with DGM, then just cement what's left over in the solution on copper.

  • @greendruid33
    @greendruid33 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    What a long process for you to deal with this material. And in the end there isn't enough there for you to pull a button out. That was unfortunate with the boil over, but so difficult to avoid that with the tall beaker. I'm betting in the industry they would use a large vat with as much surface area on the top of the liquid as possible.

  • @bitsofeverything8385

    I used aluminium for cementation 4l of liquid on a 8l container, and it did came over and i didn't even go as hard as you on it, didn't expect you'd toss more pieces. A water spray would of helped quite a bit more than the water jet.

    By putting zinc on pt and pd you have a pt and pd mix metal now thats the trick taking the palladuim out first so you can have pt pure with zinc and pall with soda in sponge hooefully helped you out on the next one ou would already had it seperated with the baking soda but you got add the soda slow cause it will boil over but then the sponge will be on bottom and red liquid filter got it quick just like that yeah screetips it took me a while to figure that pt pall seperate

    Given that there doesn't seem to be a lot of PGMs in the stuff that Mrs. Sreetips keeps bringing home, and the difficulty of handling it, it may be better to cement it out on the zinc like we see at @14:52, dry it off, and let it accumulate until a refinery will buy it.

    • @sreetips
      @sreetips  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They’ll buy it now. I plan to do a refining of the platinum and palladium. Rhodium? Don’t know about that. None of the refiners I deal with give credit for rhodium. Can’t recover it. Can’t refine it, can’t sell it. I can’t even detect it.

  • @Daniel_cheems
    @Daniel_cheems 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    It seems such a hassle to recover such small amounts of PGM's.
    Only Rhodium is priced well enough to be worthwhile, but you don't find that much around anyway.
    Doing it for entertainment value is priceless though, and may bring much more income.

    The zinc - when you dropped I think it was the 3rd & 4th or maybe 4th & 5th pieces, two of them together and the 2nd one was a big chunk, I was like oh shit he's trying to bubble it over, and then you kept dropping more and I was like hmmmm I wonder if he'll be able to control this with water, hope he's ready to capture it 🤣🤝🤘

      I’ve done the zinc/PGM reaction many times. I used an extra large beaker. This has some thing in it (who knows what?) that’s causing problems all along the way. I may switch to silver chloride conversion, just to avoid having to process these silver cell slimes.

    For the foaming at 11:30 I stumbled upon a little trick that has saved me a few times now. I use a small, refillable butane torch and skim the flame over the top of the bubbles. It does an amazing job of popping them and keeping the mess from over-flowing. Obviously you need to be VERY cautious when doing this if there is a risk of H2 gas but when H2 isn't a risk it works great. Clearly wouldn't have been the best choice here though.

    I know you don't process Copper, but I'd give you $20 for a tiny bar of it that's stamped Sreetips. That's more than the spot price plus shipping.

      When I first started refining about thirteen years ago, I became interested in recovering scrap copper. The refiners that I learned from tried to explain that it’s not worth it. I ignored them and did it anyway. It cost more than it’s worth in fuel to melt it and it produced pitiful results. Made a believer out of me. I have so much PMs to deal with and I’m all backed up. I just don’t have the time to devote to doing anything with copper. It’s very useful in refining silver. But after that, it becomes waste.

    I'll be honest..I like watching your videos. On this series it seems as if your chasing in circles. I know enough about about this to call water h2o. I think you should keep trying different things but also not beat yourself up when it doesn't go as planned.

      Good advice, thank you. Just so you know, I feel the same way. Chasing my tail. But that’s the nature of this type of scrap.

      As a person I trust would you be able to help in a pendant for my wife in memory of her mother? Not for a handout...a proper price of course. If so I don't know how to reach you. It must have a cardinal in center and no plated gold. In essence an heirloom for our daughter.

    Every episode of this series has been one disaster after another. I give you lots of credit for perseverance but maybe stick to gold and silver. Just keep pushing the pgm’s further down the stockpot line.
