    ..................................
To celebrate 50 years of Bangladesh’s independence, Bengal Foundation organised Srijone O Shekore, a 5-day arts festival, from 14 to 18 December 2021, at Bengal Shilpalay, Dhaka. Supported by BRAC Bank, the festival featured performing arts, visual art, crafts, books, film, readings, and events for children. Over 300 singers-musicians-dancers-craftspersons-artists performed on stage and engaged in various kinds of programming at the festival, over the five days.
A duet Dhrupad presentation on Raga Desh by Avijit Kundu and Tinku Shil delighted audiences at Ganer Jhornatolay (Beneath the fountain of music), on the second day of the Srijone o Shekore festival. The artists were accompanied on the Pakhawaj by Parampara scholar Prashanta Bhowmick.
Tinku and Avijit are both senior students training in Dhrupad in the Dagarvani style, under Pt. Uday Bhawalkar at Bengal Parampara Sangeetalay. Avijit took his first lessons in music from Govind Gautam. He completed a course in Nazrul Sangeet at Chhayanaut Sangeet Biyayatan and meanwhile trained in classical music under Asit De. Avijit is studying music in university and currently teaching students at Chhayanaut and Parampara Sangeetalay. He has performed solo in many concerts including Bengal Classical Music Festival and Chhayanaut Shudhha Sangeet Utsav, among others, and more recently at the Bose Foundation Vasant Utsav at Kolkata.
Tinku Shil’s first lessons in music were with Bibekananda Nag at Suchayan Lalitkala Academy. Later he took up classical music with Shailendra Narayan Chowdhury, and trained regularly under Asit De at Chhayanaut. For a while he also received lessons from Vidushi Shubhra Guha. Tinku has completed his masters and is now a teacher at Chhayanaut.
Bengal Parampara Sangeetalay (BPS), a programme of the Bengal Foundation, opened its doors in November 2014 to deserving Bangladesh students, to offer free tuition in Indian classical music from internationally renowned teachers under a modern interpretation of the Guru-Shishwa parampara method. The aim is to revive interest in classical music and create the next generation of young masters who will ensure the propagation of an important musical legacy of the sub-continent.
Classes at BPS are held under the guidance of gurus Pt. Ulhas Kashalkar (Khayal), Pt. Suresh Talwalkar (Tabla), Pt. Tejendra Narayan Majumdar (Sarod), Pt. Kushal Das (Sitar), and Pt. Uday Bhawalkar (Dhrupad), and tutors Mr. Kaushik Mukherjee (Sarod), Mr Debasish Haldar (Esraj) and Mr. Kalyanjit Das (Sitar). The training is open-ended and expected to continue until such time the students achieve professional excellence. The programme has been lauded for its uniqueness, benevolence, and long-term commitment to excellence.
