Before you check out the next arc, definitely watch epsiode 384, it's filler but Brook centric. It allows the viewer to really integrate him as part of the crew. Unlike a lot of filler, this one really feels like it could be canon.
For me its when Brook first hears Laboon is okay is the breaking point, I cant imagine the worry and guilt he must have been carrying and after 50 years finally to hear he is okay
Wow finished watching the whole video and I am drenched in tears again, yeah the juxtaposition between the happy singing victory time period and the sad dying time period during the song is wild, I'm trying to be happy for everyone but then they flash to the Rumbar Pirates and it's like damn
"A quartet… a trio… a duet… a solo…” Reactions to some episodes I have to psyche myself up for first, because I know they're gonna hurt. Brook's story is in my top 5 of ”well I'm fkn destroyed" episodes. Bink's Sake will always hit differently now. Definitely should listen to the English dub for at least his backstory. The VA for Brook is excellent, and they sing a translated version of Bink's Sake (Bink's Brew). Now if you don't mind, I'm just going to go over here and sob in the corner for the next 20 minutes.
19:17 how can it be that the guy who refuses to wear pants is the most respectful man I've ever seen? "You're a great catch but unfortunately, I am just too super." who even comes up with that answer :D
12:43 York pulling out of the Grand Line was the reason Crocus thought they all left and abandoned Laboon, since he investigated what happened to them.
A friend of mine (who stopped watching after the next arc due to life becoming hectic and not finding time to come back to One Piece) and I had a full forty minute conversation about which Strawhat has the roughest backstory. Probably half of that time was spent discussing whether Robin’s or Brook’s was worse. Ultimately, we decided on Robin, since her isolation and struggle started as a child, whereas Brook’s started when he was well into adulthood. But man… being all alone for so long, with nothing but the bones and memories of his friends and his failure to fulfill his promise to Laboon to keep him company is torturous. Add the extra detail of him feeling like he’s weak and even more of a failure because he lost his shadow and now has one more thing keeping him from Laboon, and you’ve got a truly heartbreaking backstory.
@@kiragamer7520 I've watched through it via reaction videos, but never watched it first hand. It absolutely adds another argument to the table. My friend got spoiled about her favorite character being "removed" during Marineford and she didn't have the heart to watch it happen. Between that and getting a job three years ago, she never picked the series back up. The two of us are going to watch through it together starting at Sabaody, but stuff keeps coming up when we try to hang out.
Them tears you shed show just how beautiful this anime is, man. Literally nobody has ever watched this scene without crying... One Piece is one of the greatest in existence dawg. I don't wanna say the greatest because thats gonna spin heads but, this series is so goated, dawg
Binks brew to me is one of the most heart breaking amd tearful moments I'm one piece and I love every second of it. Rewatching it and seeing other people's reactions is always great to see. A very powerful scene in an amazing anime.
I like how it didn't take long at all for you to warm up to Brook. Would love to see a list of your favorite or saddest backstories, in a few more arcs.
I've never cried over an animal more than I've cried for Laboon when the crew had to leave him and avoid eye contact. The sadness in Laboon's cries get me every time
I cried like a baby when I first saw Brook’s backstory many years ago and I cried again watching your review. It never fails to bring out the water works 😢
Brooke is my favorite character in one piece, to me its not over until he meets laboon again. i wont be able to handle anything less from this show. he may be crude with his jokes, but when you realize the true pain he has gone through, that is his one real flaw. he just tries to keep himself sane for laboons sake.
The next “filler episodes” are pretty good, it’s just Brook trying to fit in and exploring the ship while the rest of the crew leisurely drift around at sea to the next island. It’s not something that’s needed but it’s got a nice feel to it! ❤
I got teary during some of the backstories by this point, but something about Brook's just broke me(maybe since it was during the pandemic). It was the first time I had to pause something because the tears just wouldn't stop coming out.
It's pretty rare for me to cry at media. Throughout the entirety of One Piece, I only cried once. Brook's backstory was that time. Specifically him hallucinating his crew. It's just so visceral to me. Brook's wacky attitude is showcased as a genuine descent into madness from FIFTY years of loneliness, with only the dial of his crew's last moments to keep him going. It's a big reason as to why he is my favorite Straw Hat.
eyyy i appreciate you~ you remember stuff i mean its fine if you dont but it just adds to my impression that you like this show thus cares about it to remember details
Zoro accepted all of Luffy's pain and fatigue to save his captain. But Luffy has absorbed all the pain and fatigue to save his crew in the first place.
The lyrics to Binks's Sake are likely referring to the Void Century. It's meant to sound happy, but as you get closer to the end, you can tell it's actually kind of sad. That said! Fun fact: Before the true name of "Laughtale" was revealed, we used to think it was called "Raftel" which is spelled with the same katakana. The last word of this song, "Waraibanashi," means "funny traveling tale." . That means the true name was hinted at for the first time in THIS arc.
While it may have been hinted at for us readers, the in-universe chronology does not work out. The Rumbar Pirates were wiped out in the Florian Triangle 50 years ago, while it was merely 25 years since Gol D. Roger only reached the final island. (Of which the true name is a SPOILER for someone who is only at TB that you should not be mentioning in these comments!) At which point they were the ones to name it as the ones who discovered it. Thus Bink's Sake clearly predates the discovery and naming of the final island, which means that the final line of the song cannot be a reference to the final island. That said, there are two exceptions to that that I can think of. (This speculation might dip a little bit into spoiler territory, but I've done my best to keep everything super vague!) First is that the creation of the song is part of a bigger narrative that involves some sort of prophecy or time travel, but there is no evidence to suggest that. Alternatively, that would imply that those people from 800+ years ago who left behind at the final island that which made Roger name the island as he did saw the place & topic in a very similar manner and wrote a song about it that endured well over 800 years since the void century ended. But given the overall story hints regarding the past, unfinished business and Roger's regret regarding his timing, I feel like it is unlikely that both the people from 800+ years ago and Roger from 25 years ago would have felt the same way about what is left at the final island.
I've cried at a lot of beautiful art, but nothing has made me sob uncontrollably like this. After all, I'm here watching peoples' reactions just to cry more. I will just hear the melody of Binks no Sake and tear up. I guarantee this series will end with Brook playing that recording for Laboon, and the world will sob, but it will be beautiful
Brook's backstory is indeed one of the roughest and it lets you excuse some of his behavior because he effectively went insane from being alone for so many years. If anything, it's a miracle he's this lucid considering how many dozens of years he spent traveling in that misery. But now he's part of the crew, and things are looking good for him.
I am so glad nami was like "i got chu sis thanks for helping me deal with that creep". Lola and Nami best friends for life! And yea learning about brooke broke me you can definitely tell he's like infinitely sad but hides it with goofy skeleton and being dead jokes. Hopefully with luffy's help he can get past that trauma still recognize it happened but deal with it in a healthier less making his voice sound so sad so without any hope way.

Although you said you were going to skip the fillers for now, I'd really like for you to check out episode 384 next. It is IMHO one of the best filler episodes in One Piece alongside G-8, and it focuses entirely on Brook learning to live with other individuals again while also showing some of the fun ship life between islands. It is the perfect episode to watch right after leaving Thriller Bark.
It's definitely expected to cry during Brook's backstory. While it isn't as large in scale as other stories like Nico Robin's, it is definitely up there for tragic backstories of One Piece on a personal level. It's actually a pretty common theory in the fandom that those 50 years of solitude legitimately drove Brook insane to a degree; hence his overabundance of skull jokes, asocial habits and manners and his fixation with asking to see womens' panties. He made it through a type of hell that many would rather give up than experience thanks to the strength of his vow to see Laboon again. Also, Bink's Booze is a very interesting kind of song where, depending on how you perform it, it can fit for both happy, sad and a whole host of other situations. Looking forward to your reaction for the upcoming arc!
Hopefully you enjoy your trip. Now who you talkin to?, that's your business (had to fit that in somehow lol). Bink's Booze(sake), it is a great and fun song, but played with Brook's backstory gives it a really melancholic vibe. At the very least Brook is no longer alone, we have left Thriller Bark and we *finally* have our musician, though probably not one we would have expected. Thanks for the video!

it was literally the ONLY thing that held him together, without Laboon and his mission, he would've lost his mind to madness long ago.
Binks sake is by far my favorite song in the show.
Bink's Sake was actually a collaboration between Oda and the composure for the anime because Oda wanted to write lyrics that actually work musically.
