An Alan Wake DLC to Control would have explained couple of additional things (as well as the Federal Bureau of Control, FBC references in the game) but they are not that necessary to get the story.
yeah there's a lore video I need to watch that explains how the universes are linked. should add a bit more context
I would, however, highly recommend playing Control at some point. It's more action than horror (there's still some horror, though) and if you like Alan Wake, then I think you would like Control, too.
