For me the best part of 'L to the OG' is Cousin Greg trying desperately to vibe to it and sing along
It's like he's never heard music before and he's trying to figure out why other people are moving
@@thepremisevideoessays actual alien
Loool that’s my favourite part
Cousin Greg represents exactly all of us 😂
Greg is almost always the best part of any scene he is in. Which is amazing because so many of them are with Tom.
Connor Roy was interested in politics at a very young age
Thank you for following the rules
To which I would add that Connor Roy was interested in politics at a very young age
Omg I love watching different succession vids and seeing this quote in the comments lol 😂
Honestly made my day haha
Tony used to eat cheeseburgers
HE IS THE ELDEST CHILD!
Dude carried the confidence ALL THE WAY to the end despite the ice cold crowd response. That alone deserves a lot of credit
Kendall is a cosplayer. He's good at being onstage and playing dress-up. Real life is another story however
My boi squiggle really hit this one out of the park huh
Pretty good beat he cooked up
This is a Karma Award worthy comment 👍
😂😂😂
Unlike the poor kid in ep 1 😢
all bangers, all the time.
I could barely watch that rap scene the first time around, I felt almost embarrassed for Kendall..? But now I've gone back to it sooo many times, the tune is seriously addictive. And now understanding it more, it's even more enjoyable to go back to
YES!
Same, it’s so cringey it’s looped round into being great! I love it.
LOL, I just left almost the exact same comment, I couldn't even watch it on the show but now I cant stop watching it!
It's lowkey hard af
Same heree
I think the hip hop classical crossover represent the Billionaire class perfectly. They’re baroque gangsters
"Barroque gangsters" I see some protein in that term. What are the optics on making it popular?
I see it more as representative of the different generations. Logan being classical and Kendall being hip hop.
perfectly worded !
"Baroque gangsters" is such a galaxy brain moment. This is the only way I'm referring to billionaries from now on.
One thing you're missing is that Kendall is loosely based on James Murdoch who was a partner in the independent record label Rawkus that had Company Flow and Talib Kwelli and Mos Def on their roster. In the first season, they show Kendall vibing TWICE to Run the Jewels and DJ Shadow's song Nobody Speak. El-P was in Company Flow. This is definitely a direct nod to James Murdoch. Just a little thing I thought I'd add. A lot of people don't know that James Murdoch was a partner at Rawkus.
Wow I didn't know that, thanks for the extra context. In a previous version of the video I had a bit where I talked about him playing that same Run the Jewels song twice like you said, but I had no idea that the hip-hop aspect of Kendall's character was based in reality
@@thepremisevideoessays Oh very much so pal! There have been a number of insults that are very El-Pish and I think that is VERY intentional. I'm pretty sure the writers of the show are big hip-hop heads. They probably pre-ordered the RTJ action figures just like I did!
@@thepremisevideoessays actually I think this rap song idea might have a different genesis. Let me find the interview.
"Sign to Rawkus?
I'd rather be mouth fucked by Nazis unconscious"
El-P
@@michaeldarlington9379 This song specifically has nothing to do with EL-P. The L to the OG song has nothing to do with the James Murdoch/Rawkus stuff.
You did a great job explaining what makes this such an excellent example of real "cringe" material. It's not just straight goofiness. Many aspects of it are good. It's the dynamic between Kendall and Logan, and the clear mismatch of who Kendall is vs. who he's trying to be with the rap schtick, that makes it so hard to watch.
Thank you! Yeah I love this show so much because I think everything has a purpose. The song is weird, but it's the culmination of their relationship up to that point and it's a fun way to demonstrate where they're at
Can't stand cringe but I can see how this is a good example of it done right.
Yeah its definitely a hard thing to do on purpose
I don't see this as cringe because It's self aware and intentional
The Succession theme is so good. Very talented dude. The perfect mix of some dissonant chords with that beat and great overall composition is killer.
Absolutely. Just watched Dont Look Up and although it's not my favorite movie I still really like Britell's music in that
I love watching videos that analyze shows/movies/books/music because I am someone who seemingly lacks the ability to, so watching videos (like this one) allows me to completely appreciate a show like Succession at a deeper level than I was previously. You broke down the music in this show so well and it made realize how truly amazing the writers, Nicholas Britell, and any other music producers on the show are! Thank you!!!
Glad you got a lot out of it!
Me too. I feel a little stupid sometimes but hey, at least I can appreciate it!
The 808’s in the theme song are so good, it’s so muddy, but you can hear the beginning of each pad hit
Muddy's a good way to describe it
at first i thought the 808s were super amateur-ish, but now i love it
Logan is stone-faced for the entire song.😎
That is true, we never actually hear what he thinks of it
@@thepremisevideoessays I think you can see Brian Cox had to pull all his strength not to break. Amazing!
The actor cracks a smile - its there. :)
@@thepremisevideoessayshe loved it
Marcia evil ass could not hide that grin LMFAOOO
Greg having the “power” music could end up being of the best “it was right there all the time” plots in tv history.
I don't leave many comments but this video deserves more attention. I really like your analysis of Succession's theme. Keep up the good work!
Well I appreciate that you chose to leave your comment here. Thank you for watching!
What a great analysis of this song!! I'm a HUGE Succession Fan. Jeremy Strong is such a good actor. I remember watching this and cringing like I was in the audience. It was such a horribly good scene! I literally listen to the Succession theme song when I need to focus and crank out work. I am quickly becoming a Nicholas Britell fan!!
Same! 👍
I'm sorry, but L to the OG is fire
When you consider that the score of just about every dramatic show on television is orchestral (or SOUNDS orchestral), Britell makes his SYMPHONIC (the score for FBI raid on the Roy building this season is just breathtaking). To add hip-hop to that - and to make it WORK - is masterful.
Totally with you on the FBI raid score, I sometimes go back and watch that episode JUST for that music
Great video! I'm obsessed with Succession, every detail is so carefully thought out and brilliantly executed.
Agreed, best show on TV right now in my opinion
This was beautiful! Would love more videos like this: clean, easy to understand and with loads of useful information.
That's my goal for sure. Thanks for watching!
This is one of the best video essays I've seen, not just on Succession but on anything. Very effective word choice, delivery and visuals. I loved hearing about the Power motif, on my watchthrough of the show I hadn't even realized it was attributed to Greg, but as you said it works so well for his character. The others have lived their lives via an oversaturation of power and privilege, to the point where the significance of their positions is lost on them. Greg's experiences with status are all the more impactful because he started out with nothing and is actively experiencing power's corruption. Also enjoyed the background on the theme and the hip hop influence, Britell's soundtracking and musicial decisions are genius, you've helped explain them wonderfully. Summarizing and elaborating on information when it's needed respectively, extremely well done!
Wow, this comment made my week! Thanks for watching, I'm glad you got a lot out of it, and it means a lot that you felt you learned something
No no, he didn’t start out with nothing, he had $20 remember ? 😁
Thank you so much for explaining this so well. Although I understand how much music can influence whether a scene works or not, I don’t have the expertise to fully appreciate the contribution. I think this show is amazing and having information like this really helps to heighten my enjoyment.
In general I think music is overlooked in the things we watch. Theres a lot to scenes like this that go unnoticed, which is why I have fun making these videos and happy when people get something out of it. Thanks for watching, and I'm glad you enjoyed!
Greatly underrated channel. Hope your audience will snowball!
My boy squiggle deserves a lot more credit
Great video essay! This is one of my favorite soundtracks from the show!
Thank you!
This was wonderful! SO interesting to hear more about the composer's vision. To this day I have to avert my eyes whenever I see this scene played out, it's so painful. At the same time the song is indeed an absolute *banger* !
When I first heard L to the OG, I thought it was a sampled rap record. It sounded so darn familiar
I think my favorite is the end of episode 6 season 4. You get a feeling from the music that a cycle has been broken. The abberations and abnormalitiesthat always exist in the main theme have been mended. There is healing, peace and longing and finality... and they end the entire show with that bit of music as well.
Jeremy Strong should perform this atthe Emmys
This is a great video, really glad someone took the time to dissect (some of) the intricacies of the score for this show! A piece that is also very much in line with the opening scene is Roman's theme ("Roman's Beats - Hearts") which is basically the main theme but cranked up to 11 in terms of how unsettling and /wrong/ it feels. A pity you didn't touch on it, but very interesting video nonetheless. Thank you for the effort :)
Thanks for watching
Just got recommended this video and wanted to engage so it got more exposure! It's a really great analysis. As someone who didn't really pay attention in music theory class, this was really easy to understand, thank you!
Glad you liked it, and thanks for leaving your comment. Definitely helps it get seen more like you said
The Music is the Soul of the Series.
The worst thing about L to the OG is how fucking catchy it is
great video, taking the moment seriously to let the performance be the only thing you can focus on really makes it shine. this episode is what first got me into succession and this scene in particular
Great video, keep posting them on Reddit if you make future succession essays. Much better and more interesting than “why succession good”
Glad you enjoyed it! Definitely plan to make another one at some point, maybe something in Season 3 will trigger my interest, we'll see
I also feel like the soundtrack, at least the non diagetic parts of it, also try to more show how characters perceive the situation rather than be a theme of the character or point to how we should perceive them
This is why Power works with Greg: Greg is an outsider and this badass music plays because that's how Greg perceives his environment: polished and badass and scary to the point that he feels out of his league and oppressed by it.
By combining Power with Greg's bewildered expression we get that effect even if the scene is a simple shot of Greg in a bathroom: Greg is reacting to the impression of what his environment/situation is like through his eyes, which is Power, and how he sees himself in respect to it is conveyed through his body language
don’t forget that roman’s beat - hearts lines up with roman knocking on the door during…that one scene
Hmm wonder what you're thinking of...
this analysis is insanely thorough!! i feel like I'm looking at it through new eyes now and I love it
great video, but the guy I'm using as human furniture kept bobbing his head during the musical cuts and broke my concentration a few times. I think I got all of your points though. Well done!
Thanks! Tom, is that you?
I don't know how or why I stumbled upon this, but it's pretty great. Thank you!
Welcome to the channel my friend
Roman is never more relatable than in this scene
Nicholas Brittel is a genius! Absolutely love his work!
So incredibly Brilliant.
this is so well made
Thank you!
Cousin Greg deserves the best composition, he puts up with the most crap. We must protect baby Greg at all costs.
This is a great, smart channel. Glad this video's broken through, great work.
Had to stop midway just to comment that this analysis is awesome. You've really dug deep, awesome. And the music is awesome. I say awesome a lot.
Also I think this is my new favorite entertainment channel (I mean, music theory and TV series? sign me up!)
i wanted the L OG scene to end so badly, now i just want to go back.
Perfectly encompasses family cringe in retrospect
Awesome video! You deserve wayyy more subscribers
This is excellent. This video deserve a lot more than 1000 views!

Learned so much from this vid, thanks for sharing
You earned a sub. Great analysis - looking forward to more videos from you.
I appreciate it man, welcome to the channel
nice video I love the way you present your ideas
Appreciate it!
The scene is so funny that I don't even feel the cringe.
You are killing it. This was an amazing review
Thanks man, glad you liked it!
I always thought that kendall listening to rap music was a way of making fun of him/calling him out on his hypocrisy since the music genre has always been associated with struggling communities. it reminded of the white boys I met in college who would listen to Travis scott/drake and act all though even tho most of them came from a wealthy/upper middle class background.
Agreed. I think it's his way of feeling like he knows culture, but in reality he has no clue
Or just maybe it shows that he's an outcast in his family who has his own taste and feel so différent from his father in particular...morally and culturally...
Great video. Was thinking about doing a video about the musical tastes of Kendall and what it means, and this hit on a lot of the same points I was thinking of covering.
(I was also going to Dona Tron Legacy soundtrack video...get out of my head!)😀
This video made me realize why i keep repeating succession episodes oftentimes i just listen.
Really good analysis, amazing content
Thanks, appreciate you watching!
im in my baroque period too
this was so interesting to watch thank you!!!
Appreciate it!
You got a bright future broskii keep pushing these out
Thanks for making my day man!
What an amazing journey! It's funny how nothing can change our experiences. The journey is amazing no matter where we go and how we do it!
Great work, liked and subscribed. More please!
I was hoping this might finally be a place where someone points out the sheer hypocrisy of "An Open Letter to NYC" being the song Kendall is listening to in his first scene.
The opening verse talks about how every different walk of life in NYC no matter how much they make or what their background is, they're brought together through their shared need to commute through the city.
To have that song playing as Kendall is being chauffeured through the city away from the "plebs" was a great and subtle way to immediately display how sheltered and out of touch the Roy children are.
I do understand that this point is a bit of an aside to the videos subject, but seems the closest place I can point this other detail out. Sorry 😅
That song that hook can easily get stuck in your head. The cast had no idea that Jeremy was going to rap that - those are honest reactions LOL. Nicholas is very taleneyed check out his score for Moonlight and If Beale Street could talk - :)
This score blows me away every time. I listen to it when I study and it's just SO beautiful I can't even believe it
Hey man, what a great video! Nice work!
Thanks!

Great video, awesome quality
This is one of the best shows made in modern times IMO. That song was totally unexpected when it came but it just added to the essence of the show in a significant way. Not a fan of hip-hop even mildly but it was a great fit for the occasion.
Just found out why it sounds like the main theme always stumbles into the room
The names "The Witness Protection Program" and "Dr. ATM" goes hard ngl
That was an impressive break down, thank you
Thanks for watching!
I saw clips of the rap scene for a while but hadn't watched succession yet and thought it was funny. it wasn't until i saw it within the context of the show that I literally had to stand up and walk around from laughing so hard at it
This is a great video and I can better understand how the music adds so much richness to the show. Do you think that the “Power” theme for Greg is aspirational or foreshadowing?
I hope it's foreshadowing!
Just recently I heard the succession opening music on my satellite tv soundscapes music channel.
Instant sub, great stuff 👌
Wow, appreciate it!
Hey there! I've been binge-watching your channel and I have to say I love everything your doing! You do a wonderful job of helping the average person, like myself, understand music themes and their importance. Whether you're chatting about the music from Succession, Oppenheimer, or Across the Spider-Verse you truly have a gift! It's always a treat to hear someone chat so passionately about music. It's a subject that I was I knew more about. I'm really glad I stumbled upon your channel. Keep doing what you're doing my friend because it is wonderful! Your awesome and never stop creating =)
P.S. Connor Roy was interested in politics at a very young age. (I still haven't finished the whole show, but dang is it good!)
Wow! Thank you so much for the compliment! This is by far the nicest thing anyone's ever said to me on the internet, and I appreciate every word! It means a lot that you enjoy my videos and you feel you're getting something out of them. I've always loved music and thinking about how it's made, so I'm glad that you seem to like my stuff as much as I like making it. More is on the way for sure, but... wow. You just made my month. Thank you again for the kind words, they mean a lot to me.
@@thepremisevideoessays No problem, my friend! Can't wait to see what's next =)
L to the OG is a train wreck that you can't look away. It is brilliant!
This video is even better after the season 3 episode the disruption, where Kendall literally weaponizes music against Shiv.
Vanilla Ice Ken loves cocaine but Cobain? Totally out of character... L to the OG!
That was quite a scene

I thought I recognised your voice, I realise I watched your Ludwig video. Great to see your new analysis of Succession.
Thanks for coming back!
great analysis I wanna see what you comes up with next and I also want to emphasize that Connor Roy was interested in politics from a very young age.
Thank you!
Well done! Although I'm not musical at all, so some of the commentary went over my head. But I adore the music in this show! It is absolutely brilliant! I also love how the rap piece is so deliberately cringe, bc of Kendall. Otherwise, everything about it is good. You want to listen to it, in spite of Kendall, and every time he stops singing, you almost forget how he ruins it. Similar to the way he lives life and does business, he has good instincts, and knows what works, but he is blind to how he affects the equation once he inserts himself into what otherwise is a fairly "harmonious" situation (see what I did there?? 😉).
I think that line at 8:20 should be
"50 years strong, now he's rolling in a SICK ride"
Amazing video
Congrats!!!
Thanks man
The chorus immediately made me think of the old song Elevators by Outkast, both have a similar melody
Great video!
Thank you!
I will never not laugh at the phrase 'my boy Squiggle cooked up this beat for me'
