They would do a lot better to recruit from retail and customer help lines as they are the ones I can think of off of the top of my head to be able to deal with every call properly... the fatigue of fake calls, attempted swattings, and idiots calling for non-emergency and even non-police related issues can get to someone and we have all heard the results... Ya'll hear the operator for the attack on Pelosi? They do not have any universal training to recognize things like a distressed call where one cannot talk freely and have built up a conditioning due to pocket dials and wrong numbers. I think even John Oliver had a segment on 911 operators and it highlights the worsts...
@@steelhead750 I think it may vary but you're mostly right. I know some towns I've called in NJ and some smaller departments have admin desk officers that take 911/alarm calls. You're probably right in your correction but just to clarify.
these first responders act differently in an active shooting situation compared to a measley hostage situation(and hostage situations arent measley mind you). in active shootings when people have already been fired upon, #1 protocol eliminate threat. its necessary now. they train alot to make sure their accuracy is top knotch as a first responder in shootings.
You couldn't do that, but that's exactly why LEOs and soldiers train: Not only was he a good shot, but he also had enough awareness to find the best worst angle and support his gun as well as he could. The other part is that this wouldn't be too much of an extraordinary shot on a flat range; under stress and adrenaline it absolutely seems like one, but there's people that absolutely thrive under those circumstances.

Not saying they pick people by complete random as you’d have to sing up for such a job, but yes- most times they take whatever is available, even with zero communications skills such as this girl in the video getting defensive saying “Well I’m not there” smh- doesn’t matter; just help the poor veterans there ask questions later.
Not forgiving the operator or the center cause she did poorly, but the pay is shit, and the job is hard, so it's difficult to keep good operators. They need to up the pay A LOT in some places.
My personal favorite is the one where the guy and his friends are attacked by a Mugger in a parking lot with a gun. Our hero Sparta kicks the mugger in the chest. And takes the gun and sits on the guy until the cops show up. He told the 911 dispatch operator everything that happened clear as day. We heard the audio of the phone call. She can't be bothered to repeat a single sentence clearly oh, so she just tells the cops there's some kind of fight! So the cops show up freak out on him knock him around handcuffed him and charge him with assaulting somebody with the use of a firearm! And treat the mugger like he's the poor little victim. Even though there's five people standing there besides the hero telling the cops what happened. Come to find out the muggers drunk out on parole and for the love of God some odd reason the cops decided to give him his gun back from the previous crime! They claimed it was some sort of clerical error. So the cops looks stupid, and their egos can't handle that. So they charge the guy with a retaliatory strike after they say the incident is over. Because he put his foot on the muggers back when he tried to move after the fight. I watched the video! All because the dispatcher couldn't be bothered to tell the officers what was happening! And then the cops had to come in like Billy badass and take over the situation, that was completely already handled.🙄 Too many cops act like little children with giant egos and a gun. YOU CAN'T TELL ME NOTHING! Didn't you just Ask me what happened? Tarded

"All they need is help", bro they literally tried to help him but when you've got a firearm in your hands and you're endangering others, all that needs to be done is to eliminate that threat.
Keep including the dispatchers in these videos. As a newly hired dispatcher this helps us keep the 300th Call Syndrome from effecting us. We get complacent easily because there are so many calls that are bullshit, or small fry that when big shit hits we get flustered or emotional. This 911 operator did not control themselves and I hope they got the feedback they need to never do that again.

@bigotbonded all you have to do is explain to them what their job actually is, and on top of that, what it should mean to them. they need to understand that if they just take the paycheck and don't give me their full effort, their paycheck is gonna go down 'till it's gone. show them what they can achieve, show them the incentive, make sure they can see their path forward and up, and they will work for you as well as themselves.
@@bigotbonded It is obvious you either have never managed people or I sympathize for those you have. I was a senior supervisor who trained supervisors in customer service. I always said "Trust but verify" meaning you damn well better be randomly monitoring conversations so we can further set agents up for success when we recognize the opportunities. Also, when a direct report fails at anything, as a leader, I always say we should consider this our own failure. Where did we not support them properly? Why did we not recognize they needed more training earlier? What could I have done differently to avoid this incident? SO yes, this 911 dispatcher did a terrible job handling this call. First her management should be reviewing both training/continued training as well as monitoring (QA should be a part of all employees who deal with the public) If an employee is given all the tools necessary and still fails to perform, then we can conclude that this may not be the best fit for them, and send them on their way.

Dude that was hollywood levels of accuracy. Hitting a shot from that distance on a target so small as half of a face when the target is being covered by a human shield. The sheer confidence on that officer that not only he can make that shot, but also not harm the civilian, is on another level.
Bro only took 4 seconds from fully seeing the guy to firing. Sights were only trained for about 2 seconds. That's was a confident and accurate shot right there 👍 helluvan operator
I counted about 12 steps from where he took the shot to where the hostage was standing. Assuming each step was not more than 3 feet that's a 12 yd shot. With a somewhat stable position that's not a tough shot even with the "stress" everyone will mention that makes it more difficult. He's not even getting shot at, not near as stressful as it could have been.
My rifle is sighted in once a year and it's always out as it's shared with others and the scope gets banged around in the car when going in and out every day. Not a shot I'd be comfortable taking with shared equipment.

I pity the hostage taker in this one because it's clear he wasn't all there. Doesn't excuse his actions nor make the consequences he brought upon himself unjustified but it's a rotten shame that veterans are treated this way.

That officer obviously trains very well no one would take that shot unless you know your weapon is 1000% accurate. I wouldnt say everyone can make that shot but many can but to use your long gun enough to know that it is true is what saved lives. Bless that officer.
Agree. But I would also say that when you have good training, you're confident with your weapon/gear, and you have good shooting skills/results, it surely helps. In my best moment in my career, I could have been confident to do that . Nowadays? No way.
The problem tho is you don't know when the suspect or hostage could move suddenly. It worked out and I am impressed but it also could have gone very bad very quick. If he shot the hostage it's a dead innocent and his career is over and he has to live with that forever but I'm glad it worked out.
Interestingly, I am an EMT in Milwaukee, and we get various calls to that building fairly regularly. MPD did a great job shutting down the bad guy's computer and saving that hostage.

The absolute shock on the victim. Poor guy. So sad but so fascinating to see how shock in these scenarios can effect people so differently. Once the gunman was shot, the hostage just stands there, as if he didn’t even understand what occurred. And in that moment, he probably didn’t understand. His brain is just complete shut down from stress that he doesn’t even register the gunman’s dead.

when deciding between immediately sending 5 or 6 officers to a weapons complaint call, or to page out the entire swat team for a hostage situation, a one sentence clarification can come in handy..
I am glad the guy had the training band confidence to take the shot. Probably trains on his own. That one was actually a bit difficult but you'll have guys fully exposed with relatively easy shots and no one has the confidence to take the shot. So awesome to see

Anyone who’s worked as a first responder in any capacity knows that there are a fair share of dispatchers like that one. Not all, not most, but far too many, and it’s because they get away with shit way too easy. One time I had a dispatcher tell one of our units “you don’t need additional resources cuz fire hasn’t requested additional resources,” despite our unit being the only first responder vehicle on scene. She still works for us 😁 The man who called in this video prolly interrupted whatever movie they were watching at the time, so she got all cranky
It's a shame she doesn't end up bleeding out begging a dispatcher for help only to be told "Shut up and tell me what they guy looked like - that would be cool I think
During COVID I did testing for the ambulance company I worked for. One time on our way back to base the truck broke down. She was a old shitty rig and the gas gauge was broken and we ran out 2 blocks from base. The dispatch supervisor told us and called the senior guy in the trucks phone and told us there's another truck behind us with lights and there's 7 of us you can push it. As we pushed it into the parking lot a tow truck turned the corner apparently a supervisor called one to the garage and HR walked out of the front door leaving for the day. They saw us push the truck into the lot asked why, said what the fuck turned back around and ripped the Dispatcher a new one. He had to write a formal apology to the driver and everyone who helped push.
I had to call 911 one time cause an ex roommate of mine was high on meth and acting crazy, the dispatcher did a horrible job on the other line, i kept asking if they were sending police and she would not answer me and kept asking questions that had nothing to do with the situation, she could tell i was getting upset and did the same thing this dispatcher did in the video and made me feel like she did not give a fuck about what i was going through in the moment, i understand its a crazy stressful job at times but some people in that line of work do not deserve to be there!
I called police on my mentally ill mother seeking help and the lady told me to shhhh and was rude to me. My adrenaline was skyrocketing and i'm pretty sure I have ptsd because of growing up with a mentally ill mom and having to deal with it as an adult made me want to take myself out completely.

When I was a Deputy this was one of my worst fears, we practiced this at the range but still nerve racking taking that shot. Awesome resolution to the situation. Only bad guy hurt.

The really sad part of all this is how horrible the VA is for mental health. I called for an appointment and they told me it's a 90 day wait to even have a consult. Told me if I wanted to spend my own money, I can go get my own MH doctor. Like I'm 100% for a reason.
I know it’s not a veteran’s association but there’s a company called bettergen which provides free mental health consultation, there’s not fees or wait times. It’s a Scottish company but it’ll probably work in the US too, stay safe brother.
please contact the head of the VA administration and your elected Congressman. I was under the impression if a veteran wasn't able to get treatment within a certain amount of time; they were given a pass (of sorts) to go to a civilian doctor. also, check in to teledoc online. take care and good luck

In my experience most 911 operator’s do not like to handle any kind of stress and always give you an attitude and request that you relax no matter what’s going on instead of just taking the information as it is.. why you’d take someone’s tone who is most likely gonna be stressed personally is beyond me

Donut I met a cop at work. I asked him about funny muzzle strike stories and got a good one. His partner was answering a drunk man in the street call. He falls over and his partner approaches to assist him and get him off the road. The man was reaching in his coat for his gun and his buddy nailed him right in the forehead and put him down fast. I got told the mug shot had a clean circle bruise on his forehead and it was hilarious! This cop I talk to also mentioned he enjoys your content and used to be on the Lacrosse Wisconsin police force. Sadly he was gone before the T-rex happened. But he knew about it.
I have never understood why 911 operators seem to ask the same questions multiple times. I get they aren’t there but it seems like they constantly ask over and over when its easy to hear what they are saying
Probably for positive confirmation. You want to ask someone in high stress situations to make sure they are accurately reporting something, whether because circumstances change or because of misunderstanding. But this 9-11 operator could be a little more professional about it.
They have a nationwide system they follow on their screens that are prompted when call is initiated. They have to check those questions off as they ask. He's repeating answers. Yes she could have spoke more caring but everything shes getting from him is going straight to officers while they talk and those officers need to know every detail. Plus for the report, every one of those questions and answers are logged. Yeah it sounds annoying for her say that,but answer the questions and it'll all go smoothly. I'm sure she was reprimanded by her lead and supervisor. They listen on calls. Morgan County dispatcher -state of Alabama.
It's also possible the audio is captured at the source so it sounds clear to us, but the audio equipement for the dispatcher might suck and they can't hear shit lol
I understand it's because they need to keep them on the line and talking and aware of on-going developments, and guess hard to keep them talking without asking questions but I know what you mean.
Good thing he didn't shoot the hostage in the face..... Just saying. What if his sights were slightly off, banged them on his car door or the entryway going in the the building. Anyways good shot and thank God it didn't happen.
I was actually thinking about that as I kind of imagined being in the same situation. "Standoff" is important to remember with AR platforms. At short distances, you have to aim about 2" high since "point of aim" and "point of impact" are two different things at short distances due to the height of the sights or the optic above the bore of the rifle. A lot of people forget that.

listen this is protocol in an active shooting situation. if it was merely a hostage situation and the man was not an active shooter they would have deployed de-escilation first. but since lives were already threatened by deadly assault the protocol becomes #1 eliminate the threat, EVEN IN A BODY BLOCK the cops must be willing to eliminate the threat as soon as possible. its why this happens within 10 seconds after the first cop instructed "DROP THE GUN" the 2nd cop did not hesitate after the instruction was not listened to. theres no negotiating with an active shooter. PROTOCOL AT ITS FINEST. glad it had a happy ending
The BALLS of that officer to take a shot that close, you have to have EXCELLENT understanding of your optics zero and height over bore. Even variables that the officer cannot control like the suspects movement. You'd be surprised how many cops out there basically don't know how to shoot a gun.

All I can think about is I wonder what these Vets had to endure in their lives to then ending up in a half way house. This situation definitely didn't help with their recovery and/ or PTSD.
A lot of very damaged people join the military thinking it's a way out. Then when they realized it actually sucks majorly to be in the military they then spiral lower. Then they get out with no plan and life sucks even more. I wouldn't blame the military for good situation without knowing more. Source: 8yrs in the Army. Most are great dudes but my good there are some absolute weirdos and crazies. They also usually aren't in combat units. I would bet money there is no military related PTSD, and it's just a dude who joined broken and left broken.
Donut, Milwaukee PD lost an officer in the line of duty a couple weeks ago. Peter Jerving was attempting to apprehend a robbery suspect when gun fire was exchanged and they both lost their life. If you can find a way to support the family that would be a blessing! 💙

As an ex dispatcher, call operators like this made me wonder what happened during the recruitment process.
Usually, they're a Sheriff's in many counties that act worse than this operator during 911 call, that are dispatchers of 911.
It only gets better with the next generation.

these first responders act differently in an active shooting situation compared to a measley hostage situation(and hostage situations arent measley mind you). in active shootings when people have already been fired upon, #1 protocol eliminate threat. its necessary now. they train alot to make sure their accuracy is top knotch as a first responder in shootings.
You couldn't do that, but that's exactly why LEOs and soldiers train: Not only was he a good shot, but he also had enough awareness to find the best worst angle and support his gun as well as he could.
The other part is that this wouldn't be too much of an extraordinary shot on a flat range; under stress and adrenaline it absolutely seems like one, but there's people that absolutely thrive under those circumstances.

Not forgiving the operator or the center cause she did poorly, but the pay is shit, and the job is hard, so it's difficult to keep good operators. They need to up the pay A LOT in some places.
My personal favorite is the one where the guy and his friends are attacked by a Mugger in a parking lot with a gun. Our hero Sparta kicks the mugger in the chest. And takes the gun and sits on the guy until the cops show up. He told the 911 dispatch operator everything that happened clear as day. We heard the audio of the phone call. She can't be bothered to repeat a single sentence clearly oh, so she just tells the cops there's some kind of fight! So the cops show up freak out on him knock him around handcuffed him and charge him with assaulting somebody with the use of a firearm! And treat the mugger like he's the poor little victim. Even though there's five people standing there besides the hero telling the cops what happened. Come to find out the muggers drunk out on parole and for the love of God some odd reason the cops decided to give him his gun back from the previous crime! They claimed it was some sort of clerical error. So the cops looks stupid, and their egos can't handle that. So they charge the guy with a retaliatory strike after they say the incident is over. Because he put his foot on the muggers back when he tried to move after the fight. I watched the video! All because the dispatcher couldn't be bothered to tell the officers what was happening! And then the cops had to come in like Billy badass and take over the situation, that was completely already handled.🙄

Keep including the dispatchers in these videos. As a newly hired dispatcher this helps us keep the 300th Call Syndrome from effecting us. We get complacent easily because there are so many calls that are bullshit, or small fry that when big shit hits we get flustered or emotional. This 911 operator did not control themselves and I hope they got the feedback they need to never do that again.

I was a senior supervisor who trained supervisors in customer service.
I always said "Trust but verify" meaning you damn well better be randomly monitoring conversations so we can further set agents up for success when we recognize the opportunities.
Also, when a direct report fails at anything, as a leader, I always say we should consider this our own failure. Where did we not support them properly? Why did we not recognize they needed more training earlier? What could I have done differently to avoid this incident?
SO yes, this 911 dispatcher did a terrible job handling this call. First her management should be reviewing both training/continued training as well as monitoring (QA should be a part of all employees who deal with the public)
If an employee is given all the tools necessary and still fails to perform, then we can conclude that this may not be the best fit for them, and send them on their way.

Dude that was hollywood levels of accuracy. Hitting a shot from that distance on a target so small as half of a face when the target is being covered by a human shield. The sheer confidence on that officer that not only he can make that shot, but also not harm the civilian, is on another level.

I counted about 12 steps from where he took the shot to where the hostage was standing. Assuming each step was not more than 3 feet that's a 12 yd shot. With a somewhat stable position that's not a tough shot even with the "stress" everyone will mention that makes it more difficult. He's not even getting shot at, not near as stressful as it could have been.

My rifle is sighted in once a year and it's always out as it's shared with others and the scope gets banged around in the car when going in and out every day. Not a shot I'd be comfortable taking with shared equipment.

That officer obviously trains very well no one would take that shot unless you know your weapon is 1000% accurate. I wouldnt say everyone can make that shot but many can but to use your long gun enough to know that it is true is what saved lives. Bless that officer.

Interestingly, I am an EMT in Milwaukee, and we get various calls to that building fairly regularly. MPD did a great job shutting down the bad guy's computer and saving that hostage.

The absolute shock on the victim. Poor guy. So sad but so fascinating to see how shock in these scenarios can effect people so differently. Once the gunman was shot, the hostage just stands there, as if he didn’t even understand what occurred. And in that moment, he probably didn’t understand. His brain is just complete shut down from stress that he doesn’t even register the gunman’s dead.

I am glad the guy had the training band confidence to take the shot. Probably trains on his own. That one was actually a bit difficult but you'll have guys fully exposed with relatively easy shots and no one has the confidence to take the shot. So awesome to see

Anyone who’s worked as a first responder in any capacity knows that there are a fair share of dispatchers like that one. Not all, not most, but far too many, and it’s because they get away with shit way too easy. One time I had a dispatcher tell one of our units “you don’t need additional resources cuz fire hasn’t requested additional resources,” despite our unit being the only first responder vehicle on scene. She still works for us 😁 The man who called in this video prolly interrupted whatever movie they were watching at the time, so she got all cranky

During COVID I did testing for the ambulance company I worked for. One time on our way back to base the truck broke down. She was a old shitty rig and the gas gauge was broken and we ran out 2 blocks from base. The dispatch supervisor told us and called the senior guy in the trucks phone and told us there's another truck behind us with lights and there's 7 of us you can push it. As we pushed it into the parking lot a tow truck turned the corner apparently a supervisor called one to the garage and HR walked out of the front door leaving for the day. They saw us push the truck into the lot asked why, said what the fuck turned back around and ripped the Dispatcher a new one. He had to write a formal apology to the driver and everyone who helped push.

I had to call 911 one time cause an ex roommate of mine was high on meth and acting crazy, the dispatcher did a horrible job on the other line, i kept asking if they were sending police and she would not answer me and kept asking questions that had nothing to do with the situation, she could tell i was getting upset and did the same thing this dispatcher did in the video and made me feel like she did not give a fuck about what i was going through in the moment, i understand its a crazy stressful job at times but some people in that line of work do not deserve to be there!
I called police on my mentally ill mother seeking help and the lady told me to shhhh and was rude to me. My adrenaline was skyrocketing and i'm pretty sure I have ptsd because of growing up with a mentally ill mom and having to deal with it as an adult made me want to take myself out completely.
Next time call, scream, hang up, then call back and hang up again.

That must be TRAUMATIC^2 for that man. As a vet he possibly was suffering from ptsd. Man was almost shot in the face and was taken hostage. For someone to be a survivor of a traumatic experience abroad then come home to where you think you're safe and get in a situation like this is sad.

In my experience most 911 operator’s do not like to handle any kind of stress and always give you an attitude and request that you relax no matter what’s going on instead of just taking the information as it is.. why you’d take someone’s tone who is most likely gonna be stressed personally is beyond me

Donut I met a cop at work. I asked him about funny muzzle strike stories and got a good one. His partner was answering a drunk man in the street call. He falls over and his partner approaches to assist him and get him off the road. The man was reaching in his coat for his gun and his buddy nailed him right in the forehead and put him down fast. I got told the mug shot had a clean circle bruise on his forehead and it was hilarious! This cop I talk to also mentioned he enjoys your content and used to be on the Lacrosse Wisconsin police force. Sadly he was gone before the T-rex happened. But he knew about it.

I have never understood why 911 operators seem to ask the same questions multiple times. I get they aren’t there but it seems like they constantly ask over and over when its easy to hear what they are saying
Probably for positive confirmation. You want to ask someone in high stress situations to make sure they are accurately reporting something, whether because circumstances change or because of misunderstanding. But this 9-11 operator could be a little more professional about it.
Sometimes they do that so there's a direct question>answer for court proceedings, if things get that far.
They have a nationwide system they follow on their screens that are prompted when call is initiated. They have to check those questions off as they ask. He's repeating answers. Yes she could have spoke more caring but everything shes getting from him is going straight to officers while they talk and those officers need to know every detail. Plus for the report, every one of those questions and answers are logged. Yeah it sounds annoying for her say that,but answer the questions and it'll all go smoothly. I'm sure she was reprimanded by her lead and supervisor. They listen on calls.

I understand it's because they need to keep them on the line and talking and aware of on-going developments, and guess hard to keep them talking without asking questions but I know what you mean.

This is why practicing hold overs for shorter distances is very important.
I was actually thinking about that as I kind of imagined being in the same situation. "Standoff" is important to remember with AR platforms. At short distances, you have to aim about 2" high since "point of aim" and "point of impact" are two different things at short distances due to the height of the sights or the optic above the bore of the rifle. A lot of people forget that.

listen this is protocol in an active shooting situation. if it was merely a hostage situation and the man was not an active shooter they would have deployed de-escilation first. but since lives were already threatened by deadly assault the protocol becomes #1 eliminate the threat, EVEN IN A BODY BLOCK the cops must be willing to eliminate the threat as soon as possible. its why this happens within 10 seconds after the first cop instructed "DROP THE GUN" the 2nd cop did not hesitate after the instruction was not listened to. theres no negotiating with an active shooter. PROTOCOL AT ITS FINEST. glad it had a happy ending

The BALLS of that officer to take a shot that close, you have to have EXCELLENT understanding of your optics zero and height over bore. Even variables that the officer cannot control like the suspects movement. You'd be surprised how many cops out there basically don't know how to shoot a gun.

Because they aren't happening the way its being said. Now I'm talking about race motivated hate crimes, and in the last few years I have seen more race related hate crimes against Asians than any other race. However, all of this is over the top at this point, It just brought back a memory of the only teacher who ever gave a damn it was a good memory for me.

All I can think about is I wonder what these Vets had to endure in their lives to then ending up in a half way house. This situation definitely didn't help with their recovery and/ or PTSD.
A lot of very damaged people join the military thinking it's a way out. Then when they realized it actually sucks majorly to be in the military they then spiral lower. Then they get out with no plan and life sucks even more. I wouldn't blame the military for good situation without knowing more.
Source: 8yrs in the Army. Most are great dudes but my good there are some absolute weirdos and crazies. They also usually aren't in combat units. I would bet money there is no military related PTSD, and it's just a dude who joined broken and left broken.
Donut, Milwaukee PD lost an officer in the line of duty a couple weeks ago. Peter Jerving was attempting to apprehend a robbery suspect when gun fire was exchanged and they both lost their life. If you can find a way to support the family that would be a blessing! 💙
