The Origin of Numbers

  • The “Hindu-Arabic Numerals” are by far the most commonly used symbols to represent numbers; and as the name suggests, they do not come from Europe. How did the Europeans, and later most of the world, come to use the numbers as we know them?

      @Mr Wonder 🎩 lol, didn't you get my point that i was not talking about mathmatics,i was talking about numeral system,in which arabs didn't added anything,they just copied it from Indians, found it more suitable than any other number systems used at that time and transported it to Europe!
      Thats it,hence there is no logic in calling them Arabic numerals. Calling them Indian/Hindu numerals are better option for that purpose.
      Btw al khwarizmi was not an Arabic,he was persian and he was in great influence with the indian mathmatics of that time and he himself admitted that in his own book.!,
      Please gather some info before indulging into such discussions.

      It's probably something similar to calling "the Spanish flue" even though it didn't come from Spain.
      Considering that the major works of mathematics that were the foundation for modern science came from translations of Arabic texts and that, as the video explained, most of Europe's interactions with the numbers came through the Arab world, the name Arabic numerals just stuck.

      And yes, even though the system for the numbers itself came from India, the shapes they are written in was morphed through Arabic

      @@darthcalanil5333 soe,lets look in this way -
      This Number system originated in India,they called it as Sankhya ( संख्या - something which is calculable).
      Then Arabs learned them while trading with hindu traders,they always called them as hindu numerals.
      Now Europe got familiar with them by arabs hence started calling them Arabic numerals without knowing its origin till they colonised India.
      But it was the Europeans who introduced them to rest of the world excluding indians and arabs.
      But there is no logic in calling them European numbers because rest of the world is familiar with the origin that Europeans only help in spreading it.
      So in same manner,when truth is realised,there is no problem in switching them to calling as hindu/Indian numerals.

    • @nopek1405
      @nopek1405 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@darthcalanil5333 if you will look at original hindu numerals which are still in use in india,you will trace the origin of those shapes in "Arabic"numerals.
      And most noteworthy thing is not about shape,there were multiple number systems there in the world but they didn't know the concept of zero,it is about the concept of decimal system, which multiply the value of number by ten times, hence it makes it much easier to calculate large numbers.

    • @Jeed92
      @Jeed92 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      y thats all great, but dont call it hindu civilization, people think it means the religion, because of the brits. Hindu simply meant all people living behind the hindukush (from Persia). It has nothing to do with religion. But today hindu = religion for most people.
      Call it indian civilization or bharat or even south asian (since all of south of Asia is heavyly influence by indian culture through the past 5000 years, but hindu civilization or the word hindu in general is totaly misused because it wasnt used to discribe a religion (hinduism is no religion, its not centralized in any way, it has no person of authority and its not uniform in any way except of the concept of 3 sides of divinity / creation).
      But even indians themselfs nowadays dont even understand this fact. Its because the indian educationsystem was strategically ruined by the brits (documented), because it was the biggest threat for them to properly exploit the resources from the people. I forgot his name, I could find it in 5 minutes, but some representative of the british royal family, who was tasked with replacing the indian education system with the british, wrote in a letter how he will ruin it and why.

      Its not, when Indians gave the concept of zero which they called as Shunya ( शून्य ), for them it resembles emptyness and they said that emptyness is best form of completeness!
      Because if something has a value,it is not complete in its whole hence it is शून्य /zero only which is complet.
      This led to establishment of concept of शून्यवाद / shunyavaad in early Hinduism and Buddhism.

Therefore I invite you to check out Adelard of Bath who was the real person who spread awareness of "Arabic Numbers" plus a lot of other Arab enlightened scientific thought across the post 1066 William the Conqueror Europe of France and the UK.
    He travelled to the Arab world and spent 5 years learning to read and write in several languages. When he returned he became known as the "Go to Guy" to understand why some Nations and Cultures were so far ahead in all the Sciences. He was tutor to the English King and was exceptional in that he was a Monk who also believed in educating women who were generally excluded from any kind of advanced education.
    It was hundreds of years later before women were even allowed to study and get a Degree! He is largely unknown because he was not a Self-publicist" which we all know is the secret of being Famous for inventing anything.

The first recorded zero appeared in Mesopotamia around 3 B.C. The Mayans invented it independently circa 4 A.D. It is Just that india also teach its students, English language and hence while those who study maths in English language are provided with the modified version of indian numerals but when Indian students study maths in Indian languages, they learn it by using original indian numerals.
      Please get your facts right sir.

    Can't believe the numbers we use today are not from the ethnic who created the ABC letters and they were both easy, I wonder if Arabics now swap 123 to I, II and III, did they?
    I came to watch this, because of new years eve and new years day having the number 1 each, 1 and 31, but I thought if it was ever my lucky number 3, then it would of been 3 2 1 if backwards way the timeline went.

    The numbering system was invented much before Arabs came in. Stop stealing Bharat's achievements. it is not Hindu-arabic. It is just Bharatia. For once stop acting like a colonizer. Even gravity and Pythagoras' theorem were invented in Bharat much before Europeans.
