Honestly Bobby is able to handle self confidence a lot better than Peggy in that he doesn’t inflate his ego to hide his insecurities. He has a very realistic mindset about his flaws but doesn’t let them hold him down for long.
What a nice moment. Bobby, a child, couldn't care less about first place. He's ecstatic that he and his dad got to participate in something they both like and got some form of recognition for doing it. Hank was disappointed in himself for losing, but seeing his son's joy snapped him out of it. Bobby reminded him what the real value in this experience was. Such a good kid.
Agreed. I love this one so much. It's touching that Hank has realized he's given his son the kind of happy memories with him that he didn't get with his own father.
@emilyhedrick2851 Exactly what I was thinking, he's automatically disappointed in himself because had this been a memory he shared with his own father he would have been scolded for being a terrible shot.
I kind of wished this series delved more into Bobby’s talents such as shooting, cooking, and entertaining, rather than largely portraying him as slow, lazy, and uncoordinated.
I think that's the thing Hank misses most of the time (aside from the target). Bobby doesn't care about first place, trophies, or prizes. He just wants to spend time with his father.
This comment is right, and it actually makes me think of something I was reading about recently. The fatherless home epidemic in the US is something about which I care very deeply, and having recently become a father myself, I wondered what could drive a man to leave his own child. Apparently, the reason that most absent dads give for leaving is their failure to be able to provide financially for their children. My first thought was that it sounds like an excuse, but my church's pastor told me about how it's a problem borne of a societal misinterpretation of what a father's role in the household is supposed to be. A lot of men suffer immense pressure because of this misinterpretation and can't handle it, so they end up feeling like failures, and decide that their families would be better off without them. But when the children of these absent fathers are interviewed, they tend to feel that money be damned, they just want to spend time with their dad. If they're still poor, then that's okay. The important thing is to teach people that a man should do his best to provide financially and materially, yes, but a father has other, far more important other roles as well; that it's better to struggle a bit with a loving father than be wealthy without one. That just like Bobby, kids just want to spend time with their dads.
I really like how Bobby is a combination of Hank and Peggy’s best aspects in that he has his father’s down to earth politeness and his mother’s self confidence.
Realistically, Bobby is far more talented than hank. Shooting, home ec, cooking, comedy, and his dating record. He is shorter than hank, but he has more game at life
If you think about it, this is the first year Hank and Bobby competed with presumably only a few weeks of training and they still got second place. With one year of training, they’d win the next year
I love the part where reality sticks in and its not a walking into the sunset moment but a dont know where youre going moment and leaving your spouse moment.
I'm re-watching king of the hill now and its obviously brilliant. Wholesome moments punctuated by intelligent comedy and the characters always learn something or grow.
Scenes like this are part of why i think king of the hill is one of the greatest adult animation shows out there. It has absolutely no problem being serious along with its comedy.
It’s not about winning. It’s about having fun with your kids because the years go fast by and then the next time you see them they’re already moving out.
I wonder if the end was an animation mistake where they accidentally drew them heading the wrong way and forgot to include Peggy and Luanne, so they had to add those lines about forgetting where they parked and going back, after the fact.
This is one of the great moments on the show that reminds you King of The Hill is as wholesome as it is funny. Nice Bobby and Hank have such a good relationship.
Bobby should have entered the competition with cotton... to be fair hank should be a sureshot as cottons son, but this episode explained why he ain't... but this was super wholesome.
I wouldnt say Hank is damaged but Cotton was a bad dad who put a lot of insecurities into Hank that made him not enjoy lofe to the fullest (attempted dating before Peggy, low after school goals, learninh to shoot properly, etc..). IMO Hanks life was on auto pilot and he had Bobby, by not p8shing what Cotton did to him onto Bobby, Bobby was allowed to explore things, find out what he was good at, what he liked. He's very talented because Bobby was allowed to find the fun in things, and not because he had to. Bobby always looked miserable being made to play sports but he looked happy as hell when cooking, shooting or even judging meat. Hank is a good Dad.
This episode was crud, Hank was going to take away Bobby’s chance at the competition because he himself sucked at shooting and his excuse was gonna be life’s not fair! He was being unfair!
This one episode helps explain almost everything you need to know about why Hank Hill is the way he is. His father's treatment of him as a child left him messed up when it came to any form of event. In the flashback his fathwr scolds him before he even fires the gun. He never offers tips on how to improve his shot, it's always using little Hank Hill as an easy target for his abuse because Cotton's just an awful person. He even makes excuses for other bad people. "You'll never be a war hero like me if you shoot like that! No eonder that kid at the playground stole your pail." He was setting Hank up to see that he was being bullied and abused because he was bad at shooting. Cotton was using an actual strategy abusers use whwre they make everything your fault. It's not the bully's fault that the kid stols Hank's pail, it's Hank's fault for bsing an easy target. Go look at wverything Hank does. He will always give 110% even if he jas nothing to gain from it. He'll go bail his boss out of jail who knows how many times because he doesn't want to disappoint him. When Hank does fail at somsthing he tries to hide it. He'll mention his ankle snapped during the State championship but when Dale shows video of it he tries to stop people from seeing it. When he fails to hit his target at the shooting range he hides the target. Hank is very embarrassed about his shortcomings. But he doesn't make Bobby feel that way. If Bobby does fial at something he tries to cheer him up and give him advice, when Bobby is interested in something he enjoys then Hank doesnt compare Bobby to himself. When Bobby wants to enter the tournament, what does Hank do? He does what a good parent does. He seeks help on fixing his problem. It definitely helps that the psychiatrist he goes to specializes in assisting athletes but for Hank to so this it involves him swallowing his pride so he can be there for his son. In the end Hank never did become a war hero like his dad. He became a good person.
In terms of characters all those except Bobby were exaggerated and eventually flanderized. Bobby from the start was written to be a little more realistic.
Hank: "Dang it. Why can't that boy like something normal like football?" Turns out Bobby is an excellent marksman when Hank is a terrible shot. Hank: ". . . Dang it Bobby."
That's 100% fault on cotton for just constantly crushing Hank and tearing him down Hank was just at least fortunate enough to never try that towards his own son and helped Bobby in every way he could
Turns out that the boy, was in fact, alright
Bobby is pretty much the epitome of "he's a little confused, but he's got the right spirit." He's a good kid
“I’m the best son ever” that’s the Peggy in him
He’s right though!
Honestly Bobby is able to handle self confidence a lot better than Peggy in that he doesn’t inflate his ego to hide his insecurities. He has a very realistic mindset about his flaws but doesn’t let them hold him down for long.
#Belikebobby
Well at least Dale believed in them.
Dale is a real friend.
Dale is a fuqqin' idiot, an' u kno' it!
Cotton bet because of Hank, Dale bet because of Bobby.
Because space aliens told him.

Ironically, during the season finale, that is what they do together, grilling steaks.

Yeah idk where you got your information on fatherlessness but it's wrong LMAO. @@tiagodecastro2929
I like how it ends with them walking out of the sunset.
I like that it ends with them awkwardly doubling back.
The whole scene is heartwarming and funny and perfect, but them returning to get Peggy is what got me laughing
I always thought they did this because the episode was too short😂
The innocence of Bobby is always heart warming.
Even though Hank never got over his trauma, but he did win something precious in the end.
It's stuff like this that really makes me tear up. Best adult cartoon of its time
You misspelled "all" as "its".

It's funny to think that even adults like Hank need to be reminded it's about the joy of competition and engaging in a hobby you enjoy.
If you think about it, this is the first year Hank and Bobby competed with presumably only a few weeks of training and they still got second place.

i really wish i wouldve been a bit older when it was on the air, i definitely could not appreciate it for what it was as a teen
Cotton collecting on his bet is ice cold
Imagine when hank asks peggy where bobby is, she points and the camera cuts to Bobby lying on the ground 😂
Gotta love the moments where these two connect

I wonder if the end was an animation mistake where they accidentally drew them heading the wrong way and forgot to include Peggy and Luanne, so they had to add those lines about forgetting where they parked and going back, after the fact.
More likely it was meant to satirize the trope of walking off into the sunset (i.e walking the wrong way and leaving everyone else behind)
Bobby: Can I put a gun rack on my bike?
Hank: Son, do you know how long I've been waiting for you to ask me that?
You'll never be like this family guy.
Bobby truly is the best son ever 🥰🥰🥰
This is one of the great moments on the show that reminds you King of The Hill is as wholesome as it is funny. Nice Bobby and Hank have such a good relationship.
Bobby would've won gold medal in Olympic shooting
For sure
swear this reminds me of the lesson in Taledega nights. Its not really about winning, its more about doing a good job and being a good person.
That's a good reminder every once in a while.
One of the top wholesome moments in the show
That boy is alright.
This is wholesome.

"We forgot mom" im assuming she just stood there as they walked away front of her lol
Like the Bethesda npc she is 😅 hank didn’t finish his dialogue conversation with her
The funniest part was the subverted expectation with Cotton who was cheering on Hank because he wanted him to lose because he bet against him lmao
And you know Cotton would still be proud of Bobby
I would ruin the moment if Bobby's dad. "We forgot mom." "She can stay forgotten."
cant wait til they bring the series back!!! (although I am wondering what they are gonna do for Dale's voice!!?)
