Pivoting & Hip Alignment for Kicking

  • This is part two of Grant's Kicking Fundamentals series. Here, he explains the importance of pivoting the hip in martial arts to devliver a more powerful blow. Many people mistakenly assume that flexibility is the key limiting factor in their roundhouse or sidekick kicking height - when in fact it often comes down to a lack of pivoting. Turning that supporting foot not only allows for a much higher and faster kick, but also helps to genrate more speed and power for a trluy devastating blow.
    Consider these videos like pieces of a puzzle. Once you can incorporate all these lessons into your martial arts kicks, you should see drastic improvements.

    Great video Grant! The bio-mechanical breakdown of each movement was done with good clarity and simplicity. Very well done! It's these types of videos that enhances one's abilities without being overwhelming or vague. I think it is a great idea to only cover a couple of these points at a time, as you have here. Later, the playlist collection of these will be a great, beginner's master class. Enjoy the rest of your evening.

    Another great video on kicking. True story: when I was doing karate, we were never taught this. Just an explanation of here's a side kick, here's a front kick etc. So I saw this girl was struggling by trying a side kick without the plant foot pivoting and I showed her the pivot. Just that small step and she was kicking correctly. It's these little small details that teachers don't really think about, but will help noobs much better than stretching or advanced kicking techniques.

      I've experienced that so many times, it's usually because instructors don't know about it and if they do and don't mention it then they're a poor instructor.

    You guys saw a lot of key points,the guy was a great kicker too! I "grab" the floor as much as I can with the foot I stand on when I execute my kicks,not many people do it that way for their own reasons,but I find it helps me deliver some more power in my standing kicks and stability as well.

    Hey grant, great video! One thing that I've been curious about was, the arm swing when kicking I've seen you kick with swinging your arm against the direction of the kick and I've seen you swing it with the kick... Which way is the right way? I was told to swing in the direction of the kick to involve more body mass therby generating more force, but I feel like it's harder to balance....

    • @grantstevensma
      @grantstevensma 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great question man and you kind of answered it with what you said. I do it that way when I know i'm going to be retracting back a high kick back off the target again (for example if I was going to then transition to something else to stay light on my feet) so you're right it helps me with balance. It's kind of a similar principle to a Cheetah using it's tail to counter balance itself at speed.
      But if I were to kick all the way through a target, like at 4.38 in this video, I won't do it as much or it will go against the momentum I'm trying to create. So it depends on what your application is, but I would definitely say if you don't do it when doing a jab style kick then you will be hurting your balance. That's also one of the reasons I'm able to stand up so quickly after as well.

    The problem I find with using the pivot with lower kicks is I can't replace the kicking foot on the floor back in fighting stance fast enough. With high kicks, I do my best to full pivot, of course.

  • @PcGameGold
    @PcGameGold 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The higher your kicks go the more they are like jab's, In my style of Karate the higher the grades the less kicks they would do, to attempt fancy kicks was just dangerous to your well being, The most kicks we did were kicks to the lower leg (as a feint to get in close) and low front kicks and those would be done without any pivot so you drove through with power.
    Most competitions were won by good combinations of hand strikes.

    • @grantstevensma
      @grantstevensma 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I disagree man, if what you're referring to by fancy kicks is things like seen in tricking then I absolutely agree with you. But if you just mean kicking high then there's a hell of a lot of evidence to the contrary of that. Check out Edson Barboza or Holly Holm as famous examples.
      Kicking at height works, but only if you're incredible at it.

    • @richie1593
      @richie1593 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you’re right hard work pays dividends no argument there but there are always people that are naturally more flexible than others and you are obviously one of those , I’ve done Kyokushin from the age of 12 and although I’m happy with my kicks I still can’t kick like yourself no matter how much stretching .

      @@ninja51n punches also require proper pivoting of the hip.

    • @ninja51n
      @ninja51n 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah.... my question was not about punching, it was what martial art does not require correct pivoting and hip alignment? If Eugene means Muay Thai he is mistaken. Thai kicks require just as much pivoting and alignment. It’s just science, you’re using your hips like a fulcrum in order to generate proper power. Sooooooo unless your coach is training you wrong, then yes, you need correct pivoting and alignment in Muay Thai. Boxing absolutely requires correct pivoting and alignment for proper “punching technique” however does not use kicks, thus my original statement
