We used to have a blast in that infield. I was there that day.. we would camp out all weekend.. i was 23 yrs old in 86.. We were able to put up scaffolding 2 sections wide & 2 sections high.. Bruton Smith ruined Atlanta when it was reconfigured.. typical 1.5 mile cookie cutter track.. AIR ( Atlanta International Raceway) had its own character being true oval.. These were the BEST of NASCAR back then.. I miss those days of racing!! Ford, Chevrolet, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, & Buick run the circuit!!
Sinse the restictor plate ruined daytona an talladega the old Atlanta track was the perfect racetrack an who ever put the idea in Bruton Smiths head to change Atlanta into a cookie cutter track outa be court marshaled an sumeraly executed by firing squad after being water boarded an tortured for a couple days
Downside to the 90's boom. Bruton went ham because Charlotte was providing great racing, held large crowds and had the Charlotte area for off track fun. By the 2000's tracks were removing seats to make it look like a sellout crowd and Nascar stop reporting ticket sales per race. Which leads to where we are today with a management staff that has no idea about motorsports and the culture. Get Woke, go broke.
The best Atlanta track
I miss these days. I went to the 600 in Charlotte that year.
opening tune is Only You Know and I Know by Phil Collins from his Biggest Solo at that time, No Jacket Required
