Jeff dominated this season he was untouchable that year , for me the mid late 90s nascar golden age jeff dominated , he was Earnhardt only competition that could hang and had no fear on the track unlike everyone else
The 1998 Pepsi Southern 500 marked the repeat of the $1 Million victory of Jeff Gordon of Hendrick Motorsports with his iconic DuPont-sponsored Rainbow Warriors paint scheme, which he won at the previous year's Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway. The biggest magic moment of the 18th Year of NASCAR Racing on Philippine Television in celebration of NASCAR's 50th anniversary was jointly produced by Television and Production Exponents, Inc. and SilverStar Communications, Inc. and aired live, nationwide, and via-satellite on GMA Network and Citynet Television 27 on September 7, 1998, with a radio simulcast on DZBB 594 Radyo Bisig Bayan and Campus Radio 97.1 WLS FM
Knowing that Burton had the flu, part of me wondered if maybe, just maybe, he backed off a hair because maybe he soiled his suit or just felt like death warmed over, and didnt know if he could get out of his car. Seems unlikely, knowing how competitive these folks are to their core... But it crossed my mind.
Well,,, what did y'all think about that ?? I saw this live back in 1998 !!! This is back in the good days of Nascar !! Look how much money they could make and Nascar had these kind of bonuses ... and it was just a great time in Nascar !!
Funny how they hardly ever wrecked back then. Because they knew if they did it could ruin their chances for a championship. DNF's don't matter nearly as much as they did. I hate the chase format. It's what ruined the sport in my opinion....
One of rhese races for petty/Andretti. John won and the engine went thur inspection and it had to high of compression for the end of the race..it had compression that a new engine should have...so Nascar took the points and money but gave John the victory

This was the first year I can remember as a 7 year old at the time, I miss these days
My left ear enjoyed this race. lol.
Gordon's 10th Win of 1998

RIP Bob Jenkins
"Track facts IS brought to you.... that's good grammar." The break conversations make this worth it."
Jeff Gordon remains the only driver to win 4 straight Southern 500's (and it'll likely never be matched)
Jeff and Jeff Dale and Dale only 4 on the lead lap
I gotta wonder when and how Ned's "yahoo" before the races started
Awesome upload : )

13 wins in 1998..greatest season in modern era...if it wasnt giving equipt/cars/people to the 48 in 2002...he would have won 10 titles.
I sometimes forget Pepsi sponsored the Southern 500 for a few years
2:33:15: Bob Jenkins talking about bulldogs, and then Jimmy Spencer has an oops lol
Entered just a little too fast
Jeff Burton had Fastest & Best car this race.. He only needed 2 more laps! Great race..
13 year old me at the time watched every Nascar race in 1998. This was liquid crack for me. Nascar sucks now.
Why?
@@hernan636 Watching all my favorite drivers die had something to do with it.
@@reloadingentertainment1261 dale eanhardt? Who else?
Same for me
Liquid crack, obsessive with these cars
Its hard to explain why now its not the same

They hardly wrecked tonight either
Caution right when Earnhardt was about to be lapped. 🙄

I miss the during Comercial commentary lol just comical
Cant handle the twenty four.
Can someone explain to me why Jeffrey had red numbers instead of yellow numbers on the roof?
Was it for something special?
Yes it signified he was one of 5 drivers going for a million dollar bonus if they won the race.

Too bad nascar is so nostalgic about this piece of shit one groove track. It could be reconfigured to actually be a good track.
