- This is a documentary interview that describes Kashmir's rich Sufi traditions and its modern challenges.
In the early 14th century, a Tibetan Prince Rinchana claimed Kashmir's kingdom after a Mongol invasion. He embraces Islam through a Suhrawardi Syed Sharf-Ud-Din Abdul Rehman Shah. This is a momentous moment in Kashmir's history and its introduction to Sufi Islam, of which the valley became a global centre.
Maulana Showkat Hussain Keng Qadiri is an Islamic scholar and a historian in his own right. Over an hour-long interview, he discusses and illuminates the rich history of Kashmir's Sufi traditions.
This interview was filmed at Nawa Kadal and at Hazrat Qazi Mir Mahiuddin Mehdi Kamili’s shrine in Srinagar, Kashmir during the Urs of Sultan Ahmad Yasawi - a Turkic Saint.
A Kazakh-born Islamic scholar, Sultan Ahmad Yasawi studied Hanafi fiqh under Sheikh Yusuf Hamadani in Bukhara, where he later headed the Naqshbandiyya Sufi order. He spread Islam across Central Asia, and his poems created a new genre of Islamic poetry in Central Asian Turkic literature.
One of his descendants was Mirza Sheikh Akmal ud Din Mohammad Kamil Badakshi born in Srinagar in 1642. His grandfather was the governor of Kashmir under Mughal rule around 1590 to 1601. His father, Mirza Adil Beg Khan, also moved to Kashmir from Tashkent. Mirza Kamil went on to become an Islamic scholar under the tutelage of Khawaja Habibullah Attar. He was a proponent of monotheism and unity. Inspired by Maulana Jalaluddin Rumi and Fariduddin Attar, he composed Bahrul Irfan consisting of 80,000 couplets in the Masnavi form.
He passed away in 1718 AD and was buried at Hawal, Srinagar. His descendants continued his work for Islam and became Islamic scholars in their own right.

Exactly sir
Sufism in past was synonym of Islam but today it is a dead thing, barelvi thought has succeeded Sufism in Indian Subcontinent. True Sufism in its raw form exists only in some parts of North Africa today. Sufis and 40 orders of sufism contributed greatly to Islam. Thank you
bareveli ka thekaydar hy isky. leave them aside ..unko bolo tableeg kro. unko ka Sufism k sath
I SALUTE MOULANA'S MEMORY N KNOWLEDGE.SUFISM WAS BASED ON THREE THINGS.
1.KALILUL TUMAAM....TO EAT LESS (HALHAL FOOD)
2.KALILUL QAYAAM....TO SLEEP LESS...TO REMAIN BUSY DURING HIGHTS IN "IEBAADAT"
3.KALILUL KALAM...TO TALK LESS...BUT TO REMAIN BUSY IN "ZAKIR" N "DUROOD"....THESE WERE THE FIST STAIR OF "SUFISM.
