Still a bit on the heavy side for me. My old Mexico Standard P Bass is 7.8lb. And I used to have a 1962 P Bass which was even lighter.

Last week I picked up a Squier 40th Anniversary Vintage Edition Jazz Bass (seafoam green) on a closeout deal from Sweetwater, and it is really excellent. Setup right out of the box was great. I did end up lining the pickup/control cavities with copper foil because there were some RF interference issues, but the build quality and setup are - honestly - better than what I've gotten from Fender instruments that cost up to 5 times as much. (I also swapped on a tort pickguard because I don't really dig the gold anodized look.)

A couple of months ago got the Dakota red vintage version of this bass. I played it straight for a month and a half. I think it’s the best squier I’ve ever played. I played it next to a fender player series and I thought the squire just blew it away. I then took the vintage hardware off and put gold hipshot tuner and bridge knobs neck plate and strap knobs of it. Not to mention les clay pool pachyderm gold emgs in. Absolutely amazing. Can’t stop playing

Great review. I reckon that scratchy feel will purely be the knob being installed too close to the pick guard. Loosen the grub screw lift it a tiny smidge and re-tighten.

I own the red version of the 40th vintage and it truly is a very nice PBass. One thing I'll mention, since they are closing these out and they are going on sale for a great price (at least at GC), the red version is NOT see-through as the blonde is. No grain or joints show through. I also own the Jazz version in sea foam green (which looks more turquoise to me) and it is a fabulous bass as well. The necks on these basses are phenomenal. I like them better than the gold versions. BTW, I compared the 40th to the CV 60s today for close to an hour. The 40th won in sound and play-ability, though the sonic blue CV 60s looked awesome. The red is growing on me. Not sure what I think of the metal pick guard on these.

“Nato” is a term that is often used to refer to Nyatoh, particularly in the United States. Nyatoh is the proper trade name for the hardwood timber of many species within the genera Palaquium and Payena. Nato (mora) is not to be confused with nyatoh (Palquium/Payena), though the two often are. Furthermore, nato (mora) is not to be confused with “eastern mahogany,” which is another name given to nyatoh.
True nato wood (Mora excelsa and Mora gonggrijpii), is from the legume family (Fabaceae). This wood is native to northern South America, southern Central America and the southern Caribbean island.

Went to the store to give one a try. Wow! It's a great bass! They had a new Aerodyne P and this had a better feel and, in my opinion, better tone. I might just have drop back in his week to grab it, lol
The hardware is gorgeous! As a nit-pick, I would love to have seen brass saddles on the bridge, but that's easy enough to do later :)
Thanks for pointing me towards this bass, all the P I've been looking for!

I got the blue gold edition of this bass. Only adjustments i have made was loosen the grub screw on the volume knob and pull it up a tiny bit, and also a 1/4 turn on the truss rod to give the neck a very slight bow as i was getting fret buzz. Oh, and a quick tune, but thats safe to say any bass out of the box needs that. Pickup height, string height and intonation were spot on out of the box. No adjustments there.

What if you drop the bass on the floor and you break a tuner??? What if the tuner is broken by itself one year later? What if you want to upgrade but still have the Squier-Fender look with the tuners or the bridge?? Nothing goldie on Fender site on the parts department...

I bought this bass right yesterday....
You can solve the pots shitty sound simply using a screwdriver and fixing it a bit away from the pickguard so it doesn't touch it when you rotate it,
but the "transparent body colour finish" in my opinion was a very bad idea because on my bass the clear strip / green streakings are visible on the front and in the upper part of the body, while the back is perfect...
The pickup sound is very good, mostly on high and mid end, but it's weak on low end, so I will replace it with Fender Pure Vintage 63, and the hardware is very very beautiful, with tuners working good.
If I wanted to keep the stock pickups there wasn't enough foam under to raise them to proper Fender specs...
The fingerboard is amazing but I found a fret a bit lifted up on one side so when you press the next fret the string makes a terrible buzz...I will bring the bass to my luthier to replace/fix the fret and (may be) to replace the transparent finish with a normal solid colour...
I replaced the round strings with flats of course ;-)
    My bass weight is 9lbs/4.1kg

you comment on the pots being 'crackly' but I found that they are just needing adjusted up away from the pickguard as they are lightly rubbing if not assembled correctly. I have a Fender Professional II Jazz Bass USA, a Fender Precision Bass Mexican and 2 months ago I purchased the Squier 40th Anniversary Precision Bass Vintage Edition out of curiosity, well that's what I'm playing all the time. I love it!!! It has a spectacular neck and the sound is beautiful. Mine is heavier than my other basses by about 700g (1.54324lbs), weighs 3.7kg (8,1571 libbre) but still worth it. Squier has made a masterpiece with this bass. As much as I was satisfied with it, as a bass player, trusting in the same quality, I also purchased a Stratocaster 40th V.E. and a Telecaster 40th V.E. The only "defect" I found in my copy was the "dancer" volume knob. The hole in the knob is slightly larger than the potentiometer pin, and the needle-tipped screw doesn't help lock it in securely. As soon as it was received it emitted a slight noise which disappeared after having shimmed the potentiometer pin.

    • @GiaPuZ
      @GiaPuZ 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@Ralferator I'm sorry, I got the numbers of my Stratocaster and Telecaster mixed up...
The basses I own weigh: Fender American Professional II Jazz Bass weighs 3945g. (3,945 Kg), The Fender Precision Bass 4034gr. (4,034 Kg) and the Squier 40th Anniversary Precision Bass Vintage Edition 4700gr (4,70Kg). But the point is always the same: The Squier with Nyatoh body weighs 700g. more than the respective Fender bass with Alder body, and they are quite a few, but otherwise it is an exceptional bass. Excellent in sound and spectacular in the "velvety" keyboard, and despite the 700g (0.7Kg) difference I will never sell it.

I made the mistake of picking up the Dakota Red version in a store. I couldn't put it down. I picked it up first as it looked so outstanding, and I was left with no desire whatsoever to try playing any other basses in the store as it felt and looked so good. So I had to buy it. I have a Fender that cost nearly three times as much and I would put the Squier in the same quality bracket. And yes... it sustains for days, it sustains so much it's almost embarrassing if you finish a song on an open note and forget to mute it, and it just goes on and on and on.

Ok man, I totally went in intending to purchase one piece of gear with money I saved up for Labor Day sales, but I tried this bass out and ended up buying two of them because they were just THAT good, on sale for labor day, and I still saved some money! I do plan on painting the bodies and swapping pickups to taste, but Squier knocked these out of the park. They sound great and the neck....the neck is the best part, imo. It sits right between my 50's vintera pbass and my 40th anniversary gold edition jazz bass (another rad bass, BTW. Totally worth a review) But even more comfortable (to me) with the satin finish. It's already my favorite neck on a bass I've owned.

Great video as always and even greater idea to share its sound with flats.
I wish you played the flats with direct input (no amp sim) and more in a vintage (Motown and early funk) way.
Is it warm and mellow enough for that ?
It seems it keeps its open, clearer tone wich is very good but not vintage enough for my taste.
Any opinion on that particular point ?
Please Squier, don’t apply translucent finished if you can’t select uniform grain woods !
For me it results in no buying a sunburst CV60’s nor a blond 40th anniversary wich would have been my first choices as I don’t really like mate red and white is fine but not 60’s/70’s inspiring for me.
I’m really glad for people who feel that look defects can be perceived as own distinctive caracter.

They keep the cost down allegedly by using left over cuts from a furniture factory. My Squier CV 50s strat body is 7 pieces. 3 pieces on top, 4 pieces back. Drawback is the glue seams are sinking in even 'tho it has a relatively thick urethane finish. The sound that comes out of it is phenomenal for the price I paid. I thought that many pieces would affect tone but it doesn't seem to. Thru the center (on top) is one piece (flanked by narrower pieces) and then underneath that is 2 equal pieces of the 4 equal pieces on the back.

The P bass is absolutely top tier , in terms of basses to record with. The way they sit in a mix is amazing. They sit in this perfect range that is right between guitar and drums. There is a reason most studio engineers in NY and LA, in the 60s, basically required the session musicians to use P basses only. It just made mixing bass a breeze as they didn't have to fug around with it's sonic quality to adjust and change it's place in the mix. By default, it just sits in a perfect sonic place. So you definitely made the correct choice for recording

The price of these is absolutely worth it. I have played all the models in Squiers CV and 40th Anni lines and they are absolutely in line with Fender Player series basses. These 40s and the CV 70s are, I can say confidently, a much better deal than the Fender Players in terms of Sound/Fit and finish to price. They sound fucking great, with nothing about them sounding worse than the Fenders. The fit and finish of those 2 specific Squiers is consistent and amazing for the price. The same cannot be said if Fender Player series instruments. There are some that are great and some that are just a mess.
All in all, I can say with confidence and experience that the Squier name on the headstock of these does not indicate and inferior instrument, in any way, compared to the Fender Players. I would absolutely take a CV70 or 40th Anni over a Fender Player of the same year. It's fine to be a gear snob, in some cases. It used to be acceptable to think that Squier is sub par and Fender is better, flat out all the time. However, the last few years have come to reverse that sentiment and now, believing Fender to be better than Squiers full stop is flat out wrong. Go to a shop and pick up a CV 70 or one of these 40 p basses and then go grab a Fender Player P bass and play them back to back. I guarantee you, if you can put aside the discrimination in your thoughts, you will not be able to say honestly that the Fender is worth more money than these Squiers

People buy this bass! It’s one of the best p bass I’ve owned , and I owned many over 30 years. The beck is to die for. Classic p tone sounds like a fender all the way. I bought mine new for 350.00 bucks. Buy the gold p you will love it

Unfortunate about the paint and grain lines. But still very impressed and excited about possibly getting one!

Yeah, it's fine on this one though honestly, wonder if others might not get so lucky though?

I was more unfortunate: grain lines on the front, upper and downer side, no line on the back :-(
