Because he çan easily catches the mage even if he gets kited. Feral can get out of nova so easily. And he has disc priest dispels. Mage will block, but disc can dispel it. If he tried going on priest mage will just fuck him up. Not to mention, the priest has healing and get out of trouble abilities. Priest could be better if mage was controlled a bit. But even then idk.
