- The E Major barre chord shape is very similar to the E minor shape from my previous video on barre chords - I recommend learning that one first if you are new to barre chords;
• Barre Chords - E Minor...
if you're not already familiar with the normal E Major chord then go back and learn it before attempting this lesson.
We use a different fingering choice when playing the barre chord - as opposed to what we normally learn when playing the standard open chord - and this is really important. It may feel strange to practice a chord with different fingerings at first but - as with any chord - you will get used to it the more you do it.
If you've just watched my previous video (Em barre chord shape) you will remember that I said it was important to use the correct fingering - and specifically not to use your middle finger for the E minor shape - now you should see the reason why that is!
Practice this chord shape in different positions until you can play it confidently with all the notes sounding cleanly and no discomfort in your hand before trying the next chord shape.
Once you have learned it, this single chord shape enables you to play a Major chord in all 12 keys on the guitar. If you have followed my previous video now you can play both Major and Minor chords in all 12 keys on the guitar using 2 chord shapes!
To use this chord (and the previous one) effectively you will need to learn all of the notes on your E string because they will determine what key you are playing the chord in. I recommend learning those notes even if you don't want to learn barre chords - once you learn that sequence of notes you are well on your way to knowing the name of every note on your fretboard.
Next I'll be covering more barre chords - A Minor & A Major shapes - and I will be completely honest with you now . . . there are 2 more 'shapes' but you won't be learning any more different chords than what you already know . . . but there are still good reasons to learn them - and if you have already got this far learning barre chord shapes I promise the next 2 will be easy and quick to learn!
