@@MastermindAtWork Well, I personally don't like how Phosh scales on horizontal screens and desktops for example. It's good for mobile form factor but otherwise it would feel like Android on desktop (I wouldn't use that either ^^').
So I would probably put GNOME on a tablet with attachable keyboard. I use it on a 2-in-1 laptop and it's performing pretty good as a tablet-like device with touchscreen input.
However if the efforts with GNOME shell for mobile form factor improve, it might even replace Phosh. Because then you had one desktop environment across all form factors which would be pretty neat for sharing optimizations and feature parity.

Spat out my coffee when you mentioned the Rockchip used. That is PERFECT! I ordered a FriendlyElec NanoPi R6s with a pretty similiar - if not the same - chip in it and I have since dug into Rockchip's open source stuff; custom FFMPEG builds with their integrated hw accels, open source linux modules to integrate their architecture and many other neat things. This is great stuff! I can totally see people throwing together a Ubuntu/Fedora/Whatever install by baking in those Rockchip components and thus making them play nice together! But that said, I am very happy to see that Fyde offers local accounts and thus being largely detached from their Ecosystem. ChromeOS is a better Tablet experience than Android on a tablet imHo as well - and there are neat little things one can do with that. Honestly, I'm down. Going to sign up for Indegogo, I want one, period.

To me, the main issue with this type of OS is that it's just a fork of a Google thing. I need a tactile Open Source OS with Firefox and Libreoffice, and I need them to run well, not like dying slugs ! If it runs Android apps, it's nice, awesome ! NVMe drives also caused massive drain. Apparently, you have to jump through hoops to get it to minimize battery drain. Even then it was high. There were only certain drives that worked with it properly.

I just don’t get how someone hasn’t tried to do a full push as the anti-apple with the same level of hardware design. Launch the phone, desktop OS/laptop, and watch all at once with a full iCloud replacement and release that to everyone. Android, iOS, windows, Linux, everywhere. Add in a killer feature (native performance level android app support with an in house app store would be an interesting) that you keep, exclusive to the OS but not the hardware. Optimize for Proton gaming.
Like, the story of Mac OS is the story of a Unix compliment OS that was lucked into mass acceptance because other sections of the company happened to become prototype idealized versions of entire product categories (iPod and iPhone) and is able to leverage those products.
Anti-Apple won’t be able to be so lucky, but if the hardware is good and attractive and has compelling features, it could see adoption. At the very least it would make Linux more compelling.

You get the “like” Nick. Here is why:
    - I’m concerned that my freedom to use my devices will be (more) threatened by Big Tech as time goes on
    - I currently use an iPad Pro, a Lenovo Yoga 920 & an iPhone 13 Pro. Trying to replace all that and the apps I use with Linux devices is a daunting challenge if you’re not already a “Linux guy”
    - While I have used Linux in the past I couldn’t give up apps I used on other platforms
    - Keeping track of hardware and software in the Linux/Chrome world is a full time job
So I really appreciate this kind of content. I got to see that there is hope for some cool touch-capable hardware and that I might be able to replace some of the apps I use most.
If someone builds a touchscreen laptop that I can run a VM with Windows 10 under Linux… well, that might be the ticket!

If they can make the hardware actually work and they deliver on everything being open (with the ability to completely disable telemetry-I'm not going to be in the habit of trusting any corporation ever again, sorry), then I am likely to buy one of these when they hit the market. I find myself very much wanting a working tablet device, but I don't really use my Samsung device. I can't disable its spyware, I can't really install anything else on it, and even if I could I couldn't secure what I'd installed against a rogue device exploiting the bootloader.
It should be my decision what gets flashed on to my device, not someone else's, and once I have flashed it the way I want it, I should be able to prevent unauthorized modification of my device outside of the OS.

Aside from the keyboard layout (no track button in the middle and no left/right click buttons at the top of touch pad) and the processor (mine is an i7) , this thing is an almost exact copy of the gen 1 Lenovo TP X12 Detachable that I've been using for a few months. Makes me think that this device is OEM'd by Lenovo. If so, be wary of the detachable keyboard. The pins that make the electrical connection between the tablet and KB are VERY sensitive and easily broken. I've already had to replace it because some of the pins broke off, rendering the KB useless. Also, the battery life on the pen is abysmal and the replacement battery a bit hard to find locally, even in the major city where I live.
Apart from that and the fact that I've forced to use Windows on it because of work, it's a really nice tablet. I can use it as a laptop at my desk and quickly turn it into a table for carrying around on job sites to review drawings. Once I'm done using it for business I've been planning on turning into a Linux box (Fedora/Gnome, which I use on both my personal machines), so this is a timely video. Keep up the good work.

I would also love to see support for modified Debian distros like MX Linux and Sparky in the AARCH64 space, as having just Ubuntu and Debian on that end is a little frustrating. they need gnome support. That, together With a little bit better stylus, this has the potential to become the go to for artists and creators. Imagine running video editing, sound editing software on this on the go. Either this tab needs a bump in the accessories - like a lot. Or the price needs to come down for people to buy it. Ofc this is not the final product, so there will be glitches. But this needs a lot to justify the price point. While windows is trying its own janky merger of desktop with android, a seamless linux merger with android (which shouldnt be that hard imo) would be a dream come true. I really really really wanted something like that when win7 support ended. I ended up installing linux on the old one, buying a tab and a new laptop for the long haul ( i really invested). Maybe this will be around and able to accomplish what I want when it is time for me to change my machine(s) again.

I wanted one until I saw the EMMC which is a no go for me. I would be willing to pay extra for an SSD option but it seems the Rockchip CPU doesn’t support booting from a NVME drive only from SD card or EMMC. I guess we will have to keep waiting. I was genuinely excited about this then researched the possibility of an SSD in it but it’s the SOC holding it back since it can’t boot from that storage medium. Sure you could hack it like the Pinebook pro but UBoot always breaks on the NVME and it’s a Rockchip Rk3399 which is the same family of SOC just and older generation. But if you are fine with spinning hard drive speeds then this will be a cool device to own.

Thanks for the video. Interesting product.
The easy way to get a Linux tablet is to buy a Windows tablet and replace the OS. I''ve done that with a Lenovo Ideapad Duet 3i. This is a fairly weak tablet + keyboard sold at a great discount by the Microsoft Store in Canada (less than US$140). I installed Fedora 37 (Gnome).
The biggest letdown is how terrible the on-screen keyboard (OSK). It takes up the bottom third of the screen, with most of the width being wasted. In most cases it provides no access to control keys or other keys not associated with graphics. I tried KDE Plasma and the situation was even worse: no OSK for the current version. Yikes.
Without a good OSK a tablet OS is a non-starter for me.
ChromeOS seems to have a good OSK. You can even drag it arround so that it doesn't prevent you seeing anything on the screen. Bad news: the ChromeOS OSK does not work with graphical programs running in a container Linux.
If you have to use a keyboard with a tablet, and the tablet has a kickstand, this is in no way superior to a clamshell. Kickstands are horribly awkward in a lap use. The only advantage of a kickstand is that the keyboard can be made dtachable. But that isn't an advantage if other reasons force the use of a keyboard all the time.
PS: I'm typing this on a very nice ChromeBook (ThinkPad Yoga c13). I don't find it horrible. But I do wish it ran Fedora.

Thanks for writing your experience with the Duet 3i, I saw that on sale locally and wondered about using GNOME on such a low-powered x86 device. Have you tried setting the screen to a portrait resolution, and if you did, how was the OSK usage in that orientation?
I suppose there's also the possibility of running ChromeOS Flex on it, but like with your Yoga c13, the experience would still probably be far from ideal. Here's hoping the GNOME devs focus more on making their DE a more tablet-friendly experience, in future releases. 😔

    > It's a container, it's never going to be speedy.
A container is not a VM. You're not running a computer inside a computer, you're compartmentalizing processes. There's no added layer of emulation, but rather "these processes can only see this subset of the system".
I'm not sure if Linux is in some sort of subsystem, that could indeed hurt performance. But, remember, containers are always as fast as any other Linux process.

I have been thinking about it lately, why doesnt Fedora makes a chrome os like version with silverblue? think about it, all of the fedora silverblue limitations are for linux users (no acces to rpm packages without reboot) but for a chromebook user? thats an advantage! It would destroy chrome os flex in every single way, you would still have a rock solid immutable image os that you can upgrade always with confidence because the update (new image) is currated by the developers, you will still have acces to linux apps through flatpak and because its not a container inside a VM it will be faster (like I said its for chrome os users, so linux users that are saying "but my cli app is not in flatpak!" this is not for you and you could just use distrobox(if the fedora devs could make a integration of distrobox to be like crostini on chrome os (basically auto .desktop export to host on install)that would be top notch)) and if on top of that you add android support via preinstalled waydroid with gapps (playstore) you can even be on chromeos level, hell Fedora could even partner with some hardware vendor to make a Chromebook like device! What do you guys think? I have always heard the "Fedora silverblue is perfect for developers" point of view but what about this "for chrome os users" one?

Reusing existing tablet hardware with a Linux distro that provides full tablet support has several benefits: Reduced landfill of decent Windows 10 touchscreen tablet hardware that has been made obsolete by Windows 11 requirements, cost savings for the user buying pre-owned or repurposing the hardware they already own and choice over various hardware configurations on offer. Zorin OS Pro comes close to that, I've found. No benefit, affiliation or incentive to me.
