      If there was a site like that, it would cost as much as several existing sites combined. And monopolies aren't known for being cheap, innovative, or consumer-friendly. If pirates are whining about paying multiple sites because they expect to get everything for the price of a CR subscription, they're not going to pay more for a site that has "every show."
      Besides, neither Netflix, Hulu, nor Amazon has every US movie and TV show ever made, yet people still pay for one or more of those sites. I'd say part of the problem lies with the anime viewerbase's culture of entitlement and unrealistic expectations.

      @@devilscreation572 Plenty of anime is also censored. But we're not talking about the crotch mosaics you see in hentai. We're talking bout the sunbeams/shadows/steam/whatever that gets done on "normal" anime. There's a lot of hot springs and showers and other such fanservice scenes where the girls are topless in a non-sexual context (at least as far as the story line is concerned!) That kind of stuff tends to get censored (even in Japan) for the TV release -- which is what CR and other sites tend to use as their source material -- but the Bluray edition has the censorship removed (depending on the quality of the show, sometimes that's the main selling point of the Bluray..)
      .
      That wouldn't even really be _that_ big of a deal if it was done well. But they tend to do it with an overly heavy hand and it starts looking very awkward and out of place. It becomes very noticeable after you've seen a couple of shows in both the censored and uncensored formats.
      .
      It would be like if HBO decided to re-film a "safe" version of Game of Thrones where the actresses all wear modern day lingerie in the sex scenes. You might not notice at first but once you realize how out of place it is in the setting, suddenly it would be all you can see when one of those scenes come on.

    Two main reason to pirate:
    1: The series is no longer available or not available in your country (and no way to directly import from Japan)
    2: Localization companies (ie: Funimation) altering , censoring and /or injecting a political or social ideology into the local release.

      Over the past 15+ years, American-based anime import company FUNimation has had a series of incidents in which individuals working on the dubs of their various shows have altered the dialogue in individual episodes to include references to then-current sociopolitical matters within the United States. Shows known to have been affected by this include “Crayon Shin-Chan”, “Prison School”, “Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid”, and “My Girlfriend is a Gal”.
      This alone has been enough to upset not just anime fans the world over, but even reportedly some Japanese studios, as it brings controversy to shows that didn’t originally have that specific controversy going.
      However, it’s not the only issue FUNimation is dealing with right now.
      FUNimation paid a high price for the license to the series “Interspecies Reviewers”, a price they paid sight unseen. Because of this, it wasn’t until they were dubbing the first episode that they realized it was incredibly raunchy, at which point the voice actors balked at continuing. FUNimation halted production, only to sit on the license for several months thereafter. While people were waiting for FUNimation to figure out what they were going to do (they eventually sold the license to Nozomi Entertainment, which has a division that handles “adult” material), individuals employed by FUNimation took to social media to lecture everyone about how “if you can’t get it legally then you don’t need to have it” in response to people demanding that the series at least be subtitled.
      FUNimation also botched the home video release of at least one recent “Dragonball Z” movie, such that the US release had a green tint to it that the theatrical screening and non-US releases didn’t have.
      Several FUNimation employees - including top voice actors - have used their social media accounts to express controversial political sentiment, with many of these individuals getting into fights with fans and critics alike over them.
      One of FUNimation’s top voice actors, Vic Mignogna, was hit with numerous allegations of improper sexual behavior right after the aforementioned Dragonball Z movie was released, a film where he had a major starring role. Some of these allegations fell apart instantly, but the fact that allegations were even made enough for FUNimation to fire him after what was essentially a kangaroo court. Mignogna has since gone through several rounds of legal action against a number of his co-workers and others in an effort to try and clear his name.
      …Meanwhile, several individuals who had accused Mignogna were themselves outed as predators and criminals, such as one individual who was caught soliciting minors and another individual who had a criminal record for assaulting their ex-wife.
      …And if that wasn’t bad enough, a series of audio recordings, images, and video recordings have surfaced indicating that contrary to the moral purity many of Mignogna’s accusers - and others at FUNimation - proclaimed in public they themselves often engaged in unprofessional and even lewd behavior on a regular basis, including a raunchy parody of one of the shows they have the license for.
      Put it all together, and those people who know about FUNimation’s assorted scandals and incidents do not trust them anymore, and do not want to support a company that allows its employees to behave in such a fashion as has since been exposed. It’s to the point now that whenever FUNimation announces another license there’s a surge in traffic on pirate websites to get that show in its raw Japanese format. There is also reason to believe that their actions are on the minds of many Japanese studios and media companies, and that it’s part of why there has been a push to find new ways for these companies to deliver content directly to foreign audiences.

    Here's another reason why piracy wins over legal streaming. SOMETIMES, OLD SHOWS ARE REMASTERED IN 1080P. In 2020, El Hazard was remastered for bluray. Is there any way to watch that version legally? Only if I bought the expensive Japanese Blu Rays, then downloaded subtitle files, ripped the blu rays, and did a crapload of muxing work. Imagine if Crunchyroll did an ad saying, "whenever a blu ray remaster of a dvd quality show we have is released, we will update our dvd quality videos with the blu ray quality video." That would at least be something.

    • @randominternetguy3537
      @randominternetguy3537 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's illegal. They'd have to pay the company that remastered it, pay someone to sub it (or do what you said, use the existing subtitle file) and pay someone to look for remasters, or pay someone to make an ai that looks for remasters automatically. Either way, its a mega loss to them, for not a lot of potential.
      For a good feature, it needs to be cheap to implement and provide clear potential. The problem is that these companies are horrible at recognizing the potential and hella low ball it. They dont see the value in "qol" features.

    Why most people outside of the US don't have a Crunchyroll Account? Because we don't even get 10% of the Content that people in the US get. Here in Germany for example we have no One Piece, no Dragonball, only half of the Naruto Episodes available. So people go to illegal sites. I use a VPN to get all the content but legally that's also a grey area and most people don't know what a VPN is.

      Nina Felwitch its starting to look like it’s happening here in the US too, after Crunchyroll and Funimation teamed up almost all of the other streaming services completely dropped most of the anime that Funimation dubs, Netflix is the best example. Crunchyroll and Funimation have raised their prices in the last year or so because of their “exclusive content” and Netflix has been dropping tv shows nonstop that aren’t exclusive and raising prices, despite the fact that the majority of their customers only use their services to binge watch tv shows.

    Whoa thanks for the shout out bud. Much appreciated and great vid!
    I think I laughed more in this than I should've. And I guess I should add my two cents.
    So ya. Everything you said I pretty much agree with. People say 'support the industry' but the industry's already been supported by the big corporations paying them big bucks for those exclusive licenses that are indeed hindering the streaming experience. I know some people will say we dont know that for sure without any financial statements or concrete data in your face stating exactly how much the industry has been paid. But take the subtle hints. Digibro just made a vid about how there's too much anime. Thats because the market has grown. You know why the market has grown, because demand has increased. And one of the most basic rules of economics is the laws of supply and demand. If the demand for a product or service goes up, the supply increases in order to keep up with demand. So you saw netflix saying 30 anime titles for next year, thats one platform out of three major ones that are throwing money at the industry to try to corner the market on anime streaming. As you said in the video and the only opinion I tried to convey in mine, was supporting a company or corporation that provides a poor services on the basis that 'it's right' is an easy way to encourage poor business practices and business models in the only market that can legally provide the medium we love.
    K its 4 AM, and I work tmrw so I dont really have time to edit this right now. Thanks again though.

      Since you seem to know stuff like this, do you know if legal streaming actually has a moral argument?
      IIRC I've heard that most studios earn they money either through dvd-sales or merch, so if you want to support the creators, shouldn't you rather watch fan-subs illegally, then buy dvds or merch as more of that money might go to the creators?

    • @HxH2011DRA

      Ah I remember seeing your video. It was very good!

    • @LhymeLife
      @LhymeLife 6 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      +ITR The thing with physical media (DVDs and such) is that none of the money goes to the creators upon purchasing the item.
      I'll be using "StoreMart" as an example store front.
      So you see a DVD in your local StoreMart or on StoreMart.com that means that the company (StoreMart) has already purchased some number of DVDs from a distributor, who in turn purchased the rights to distribute the DVD from the Licensor who purchased the the rights to license the DVD from the studio who created the product (or their parent company in most cases).
      By the time it comes to you the consumer to purchase the product the creators have already been payed in full and the bill is sitting on the store front. They do not send the creators a check every time they sell a copy of the DVD, that money goes all to them.
      What you are trying to do is:
      A) Get the storefront to purchase more copies of the DVD. More copies being purchased on the retail end means more money going to the creators overall.
      B) Convince the store front that products from the company are a good investment. If the DVD you buy sells a lot of other copies the store front will purchase more of the next DVD in the series hoping the trend will continue.

      Bootleg streaming sites only get anime subbed within 24 hours of the Japanese release because they're re-encoding rips of legal streams. Yes, some sites like Amazon, Netflix, and Hulu are moving into the anime scene from outside, but CR, Funimation, and Hidive (an ADV/Sentai spinoff) have been anime-focused companies since their inception. If you're dissatisfied with North American companies providing insufficient service in your country, then maybe some company that's actually _in_ your country needs to pick up those licenses, assuming there's a viable paying audience present.

      The thing that bugs me the most is that you have to pay to support the corporate privatization of anime translation rather than support the creators themselves. The "industry" of licensed anime providers was never needed and they just try to make money that benefits them rather than support the content itself. Some of the money goes into the Japanese content creators pockets, but the vast majority goes to supporting a terrible system that goes against fans. When they notice that fans like a product that is being translated they give the Cease and Desist letter to the Translators, that are usually not receiving any money, and give a inferior translation that comes out much later when your interest in a series has waned. YenPress and Cruchyroll are both very guilty of this. If they want my traffic they need a better business model. My personal recommendation for companies would be to have online translators work with a business in an easily accessible manner that is not overpriced. They would never do that though since their current model is giving them a profit.
      TLDR; The "industry" doesn't deserve a dime. I love capitalism, but when I have a better alternative to your crap I will go with that. The moral argument isn't really moral unless there exists better competition.

      Viorp let me like a list of your claims and that I feel are horrible examples and refute them in the style of your argument.
      Pirated sites:
      - free: Meaning that the creators get no money when you watch it there
      - get's all anime subbed withing 24h after japanese release: Because they either steal it from crunchyroll or someone does it in their free time.
      - advertisements: Yeah those horrible rabbithole clickbait ads the consume all of your bandwidth and ram which makes your watching experience horrible without an adblock.
      - run by people who loved anime since years: True with torrenting but not true with streaming sites. Free anime streaming sites only care about ad money hence all the ads and they care far far less about you than anyone at crunchyroll. Hell they barley have any server cost because most of the videos a streamed through different sources.
      - aviable in all countries- mostly true.
      Paid sites:
      - you pay: The creators get money yay
      -- there is a delay in subbing or flat out the whole anime is released at once after the season is done: It takes time to sub something and you know that.
      - run by companies who did something else and now plan to milk the money out of anime- yeah basically like free streaming sites except these sites actually give money to the anime industry
      - not aviable in my country- you can use a vpn but it will take a lot of bandwidth

The only reason people might not like about twist would probably be either the facts that there is no dub(of course, nearly everyone uses sub, but I’m just saying that people who watch dub might not like it) or that the speed is sometimes a little slow( it might take a while to load if you don’t have good internet but other than that it’s a pretty good website)

    There's a few reasons why I don't use a subscription based streaming service for my anime, but the most important issue for me is the fact that I can't access 90% of their content in my region. VRV doesn't offer their services in Scandinavia; In fact I only have access to Crunchyroll (with a sub-par selection of both anime- and manga, even when compared to other Crunchyroll regions). Why should I pay the same price as other customers without getting the same amount- and quality of content? I would gladly stop pirating anime and manga if I had an affordable means of accessing more than just a fraction of the content that I'm interested in.

      The anime industry is still going to benefit making anime whether you're supporting them through paying to watch their series online or not. It doesn't need us. Like he explained in the video. It's a massive industry. Which is why we see anime just increasing. If I wasn't correct then there wouldn't have been allot of anime been produced since those "bootleg streaming sites" were created until now, as you see now. Instead, we would see allot less anime made because of it. But no that isn't the case.

    As someone who started watching anime back when "fansub" meant a bootleg VHS with yellow translation text, I think it's funny that people seem to have forgotten how expensive and unavailable anime used to be. The reality is that in the 90's and for a part the 00's certain anime were just totally unavailable unless you pirated. This was also during a time when actual licensed anime was released overseas at insane costs (anyone who disagrees should be pointed to the MSRP $200 Trigun box set from 2001 that I own).
    What's happened to anime is pretty similar to what happened to the music industry. Years of overcharging the consumer have backfired as a result of instant availability.
    Nowadays a box set is $30 roughly but kids these days have no clue how bad it used to be.

      umm, but in One Piece case, it is quantity over quality. Old One Piece was fine but as it progressed the pacing became worse and then time skip the animation and art got worse. Literally, those 97episodes could be condensed to 40-60 episodes and make no difference. Past one piece at least 1st arc was 2 chapters per episode but they stop that long time ago. You rather buy the box set for one piece that cost about 150-160 Aud in bookdespoitory while covering two huge arcs East Blue and Alabasta that contains 23volumes. Also with that 200 dollars, only 1 big arc is cover and some small arcs. I think the jojo is a good example on how to do it, you have a complete story by buying it in a reasonable price plus the blue ray improves the art and animation of the actual content.

      And this applies to ALL entertainment media involving exclusive licensing, now more than ever. With the entirety of the movie and TV industry sliced up like it is, there is no way for someone to access the content they want, without subscribing to several services. I'd really like to see a broader video on that, because its a fucking disaster. Platforms literally only differ in terms of what shows they have, not how high the quality of service is. The content is not the service, and so to compete using the content not the service, is not just wrong, its more, way more than wrong. As it stands now, the only thing standing in front of EVERYONE in the visual media space making an absolute killing, is the market being split up like it is. If every platform, from Netflix to Amazon, from Crunchyroll to Anime Strike or what the hell ever the current equivalent was, carried ALL the content appropriate to that platform, and the only choice was where to watch it, EVERY show would get more views and if the licenses were worked out properly, not exclusively, then every view would result in financial gain for the studios, actors, voice actors, special effects artists, illustrators, directors and everyone else involved in actually making the shows we want to watch, because there would be a greater number of eyeballs with access to the content in question. Its a no brainer, a win win. With things as they are, platforms limit the access to the content they purchase control over, limiting how successful each IP can be while under their ownership or licensed control, and that is demonstrably bad for those IPs and the potential viewers. How do I know? If I could watch The Boys on the platform I am actually subscribed to, I would. I can't, so I won't. If I could watch The Mandalorian on a service I am already subscribed to, I would. It isn't, so I won't. The same thing applies to anime content. If the creators want bums in seats and eyes glued to screens, they need to stop handing out exclusive licenses to distributors, and only offer non exclusive agreements to prospective distributors, it really is that simple.

      40 bucks per year may not be like super expensive, especially for 300 shows, but the thing is, i don't give a single fuck about most of these 300 shows. In case of seasonal anime, if i find like 2-3 interesting in total, then that's amazing and once i am done with them what else am i supposed to do? It's like paying 40 bucks for 36 episodes in total, unless one anime has 24 episodes, but that happens rarely in my case, and while it may still seem like a fair deal, for me it completely is not, i am a broke ass student, 40 bucks is half the cost of cheapest rent possible in my city in mediocre conditions per month, while i have like around 400 bucks to manage the rent, costs of food, public transport and pay water/electric bills. 40 bucks from me is a huge commitment and if i were to actually make it, the service would have to be impeccable, with all the anime i want to watch and without this bullshit "this series is not available in your region". Paying 40$ for 2-3 seasonal anime or even let's say 10 series per year would not be worth it at all, especially when legal streaming offers no improvements compared to pirating.

      @Izan TechnoMaster The basic answer to "why go with legal ones?" is "Because you like anime and want to continue seeing it being produced at a high level and translated on a timely basis." Less money in the system = fewer titles being made and lower budgets; legal sites shutting down = say goodbye to the status quo of nearly everything getting adequate same-day translations. The industry's continued health is in every anime fan's self-interest -- if you don't want to contribute, you're gambling that other people's money is going to keep the industry alive and vibrant for you. And as we saw with the crash of the late 2000s, that gamble doesn't always pay off.
      I'm not saying that you or anyone else has to watch everything 100% legally, but surely there's a middle ground between "pay for everything" and "pay for nothing" -- a compromise that sustains the industry while not damaging viewers' wallets all that much.
      Besides, how are legal sites supposed to get "objectively better" than bootleg sites, anyway? By paying people to watch? Even if exclusivity and region locks went away tomorrow, they couldn't have a better selection or better translations (since bootleg sites just rip from legal sites), and the vast majority of pirates is already fine with watching the same level or worse video quality than what legal sites offer. There is no magical player/UI/service feature that legal sites can implement, but that bootleg sites cannot. Even if there were, how are legal sites supposed to find and develop it if they're constantly getting kneecapped by piracy in the guise of "consumer" "boycotts" and barely have enough money to keep the lights on?

All these streaming sites aren't dumb enough to just let themselves die, if the quality lowers because the companies didn't listen to the demands of boycotts, then someone else would come along who actually does listen and they'll gain the fortunes while the rest die. That's his entire point, all these sites are doing is just sabotaging each other and people are supporting because it's the "moral" thing to do.

    • @Zalis116
      @Zalis116 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lazypayday4476 First off, piracy is not a boycott, because pirates are still receiving the product made by the company, and benefiting from that company's labor and resources. Real boycotts from real consumers send a message of "I object to your company's practices, and I am willing to give up the pleasure/utility I get from your product until you change them." Phony boycotts from pirates only send the message, "I want this, but I want other people's money to pay for it."
      We _have_ seen anime distribution companies scale back and die in the past (c. 2007-08, and before the financial crisis too) when they weren't making enough money, so it absolutely can happen again. And they don't need to be run completely into the ground to go bust either; things just have to reach a tipping point where it doesn't make sense to soldier on anymore. Companies cannot meet UNS' impossible demands, so the logical result of a sufficiently "large number" of people adopting his mindset is, in fact, a collapse. Believing in some savior enterprise rising phoenix-like from the ashes, if the current industry gets burnt to a crisp, is nothing more than dangerous magical thinking. Even the most innovative new company cannot forge the necessary relationships with Japanese licensors overnight, especially if the latter come to see foreign markets as a wasteland of incorrigible pirates. It would take years for any new startup (which would be limited by the same constraints as existing companies) to get out of the gate, and by that time anime viewers would feel so accustomed and entitled to free stuff that it wouldn't stand a chance.

    • @lazypayday4476
      @lazypayday4476 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@Zalis116 It's not though, and would make no difference between a full on boycott and having nothing at all. First off, it's unrealistic for all the companies to die from it in the first place, for each of them to ignore the boycott until their deaths is magical thinking itself. Even in the event that all the companies died, the new company that would take their place (which is extremely unlikely to take years to happen, it's a business, as long as there's money to be gained, the studios won't mind giving their licenses out to a new company) would only have to be superior to those that died to get the pirates to come back. The charity was the proof for this. The difference between normal piracy and the boycott is that the boycott is against the sites and their desire to fight over exclusive rights instead of improving themselves, a company who doesn't act like this and instead listens to the community will gain the reaches they desire. If the new company has more to offer than the pirating ones, with a good reputation on top of that (like actually listening to the community, and innovating even without competitors), then the chances of everyone just continuing to pirate is slim to none.

We also have legions of fansubbers doing it out of love for anime, we get a lot of blocked content and we have absolutely no sense of morals against piracy (like many other things). I cancelled my crunchyroll subscription because of the quality of the subtitles. I was trying to watch future diary and they only subbed what the characters were saying, not anything on the screen or any kinda writing on the walls, this really bothered me because if you've ever seen future diary, you kinda need to know what's on their phone screens or you'll have no idea what the hell is going on. this is with every show, the pirated fansubs are usually way better and more accurate than the "professional subtitles" crunchyroll has

    • @NTaiyokun
      @NTaiyokun 6 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Problem is that a lot of fansubbers have a really bad habit of stroking their dicks. They tend to basically not think when translating nouns, blindly throwing around honorifics, and seem to have a hard-on for ADHD unfriendly karaoke subs for songs. One Piece fansubs are absolute fucking garbage for example, with the Pokemon anime fansubs coming in close behind.
      Fansubs tend to do almost no research whatsoever, and people just eat it up because they think they know everything.

      +SPTK Sun It's a shame, really... It's only natural that stuff done by amateurs in their spare time for free wouldn't be great that often. People do give it more slack than it probably should get, but that goes back to those "amateurs in their spare time for free" thing, along with a bit of desperation in some cases in regards to anything that's obscure.
      It is nice when a fan thing has a great translation though; the two that I can think of off the top of my head were done by professionals in their spare time though, with those two being the Mother 3 translation and the Sailor Moon manga. Amazingly, the official print of it read like a bad fansub, especially the first edition, while the fansub seemed actually professional...
      It's kind of sad how bad official subs can be sometimes, though that goes back to what is essentially dubbing houses realizing that they could easily pander to weeaboos with lazy translations that kept parts of in the original language.

    @Woot831 6 ปีที่แล้ว +198

    (Longish rant)
    To be bluntly honest, I want to actually see what my subscription would _really_ do for the anime industry. Open up the books and let me see just how much of what I pay _actually goes_ to any of the animation studios I want to support. Because here's the rub; I bet it's a pittance at best.
    I would be genuinely impressed if even 10% of Crunchyroll's revenue goes to studios. I've seen enough of the dark side of US business to hold serious cynicism regarding how much good CR _really_ does for the people actually slaving away in often hellish conditions to make the anime I would pay CR for the privilege of accessing. And so I can't help but hold this in the back of my mind, as people repeatedly insist that paying for CR as opposed to just using Kiss is the "moral" thing to do. _Is it?_ Can we _really_ be so sure what we pay truly reflects what the industry gets? Without those opened books I mentioned before, we really can't just take CR's word for it, and I shouldn't have to explain why large corporations should not be blindly trusted.
    So that's the problem I have with piracy shaming. In addition to the many other legitimate reasons that already exist for pirating (lack of access due to country restrictions, lack of disposable income to afford it, outright not even having the shows you want to watch in the first place, and so on), we really need to stop pretending like we objectively know it hurts the industry. Whatever my $7/mo equates to for, say, Kyoto Animation, is very likely pennies on the dollar; I'll even boldly wager the actual staff that _made_ the show I love will ever see a single cent of what I paid.
    So how can we honestly argue that people shouldn't pirate, when we can't even prove that there's a difference in the first place? If I want to watch Violet Evergarden (which I will), and neither pirating _nor_ paying for Crunchyroll is actually giving KyoAni any meaningful money, what's the fucking point of paying? Because this video aptly highlights the myriad of ways those $7 per month will be getting me a _worse_ experience, from a company very clearly content to sit on its laurels.
    In fairness, though, this video isn't like the one Mother's Basement did on the subject. That video is downright offensive, having someone who is literally _funded by Crunchyroll_ morally lecture me on why using Crunchyroll is the only "moral" option, while having, again, no proof that it makes a damn difference.
    To be clear, I *_DO_* want to support the anime industry, but I want to support it by doing something that will actually work; something that will actually put money in the hands of the people who _make_ the anime (as in, the actual staff) I care about.

      Masae Crunchyroll doesn't make anime nor are they involved in it's creation. What they do provide is proof to the Japanese anime industry that the western market is a wide enough market that they should give up some of the rights to the intellectual property to the service in order to widen the marketability.
      I think people are forgetting what Crunchyroll, Funimation, etc are. They are the middle men. Funimation is more involved so I'll keep them out of it since they offer a product of their own, but without the Crunchyroll's and Netflix's showing interest in the industry, the west likely wouldn't be able to have nearly as much access to what we have now. I mean fan subs are fine and all, but if you really have a hard on about supporting the animators, you'd have to fork over hundreds for imported blue Ray's that, once again, you'd have to find a fan sub of since you don't speak Japanese. Now, the Japanese industry could broaden to make better stuff for the western market, but that's unlikely because why would they? That's a giant risk. The Japanese industry is being held up by what the mobile game industry refers to as "whales", or people who pay out the ass for the stuff their into. Buying the expensive merch, the Blu-rays, and the publications. The industry doesn't have a great position to expand and in a world where everyone in the west has to pirate so not only do they not know how much of a demand there is but likely, they'd view the western market as a lost cause or an enemy of sorts. Even if you were to try to rally the western market of that world to by from the Japanese sources (since they are directly responsible for the making of the anime), it's doubtful that they'd give up piracy for a way more expensive experience that could even be less convenient.
      There are way more than moral reasons to support these sites but by all means, if a better one shows up, support it. Just a heads up though, I've never had to pirate an anime I wanted to watch. The only time I've really felt compelled to is with Evangelion, but I just hated the website and left after my security software went haywire (so like 2 minutes). Also, I have 3 places to watch anime legally (Crunchyroll, Vrv, and Hulu), and I haven't had any problems with any of them recently. Vrv is new so I give it a decent amount of slack but I consider it quality enough.

    One small nit pick; a lot of the arguments for "supporting the industry" were referring to the anime industry, not the streaming one.
    It's the studios that make the anime that needed the money because for a long time their ability to make money was incredibly poor unless it's a huge name like Miyazaki or Mad House.
    But you're absolutely correct about the rest of the video, streaming services can and should do better.

      Am i the only one who feels like Japan's Anime Industry is either lazy or terribly incompetent?
      Anime is one of the most popular and loved series to watch for people of all ages around the world. Even adults (Seinen anime). Yet, instead of capitalizing of the insane popularity for anime, something ONLY JAPAN can make, by launching their OWN streaming service that DIRECTLY supports the japanese anime industry, Japan is happy with the lousy one time lisence premium and menial royalties that they currently get from AMERICAN streaming services that steal more than 50% of the income. Come on! What does crunchyroll do? Only STREAM anine to a wider audience. The story is made by the japanese, the animation is made my the japanese, the beloved voice acting is done by the japanese, and yet, more than 50% of the income from these japanese works go to the americans. Why? Because japan can't be bothered to realize a golden business opportunity that only they have. Correct me if i'm wrong, but the international anime commumity would hapily subscribe to a japanese streaming service, purely knowing that ALL the money they're paying is going into the pockets of the people that actualy made our beloved shows. This is not even considering how japan owning their own streaming service would allow them to bring in so many unique innovations that crunchyroll or funimation never could, because they're a forign company.
      I feel japan is ruining their own industry by being so lax and giving away money to americans like their blood sweat and tears are a charity for americans to exploit. And they wonder why the poor anine industry is suffering despite half the world watching more anime than any crap that comes out of hollywood. All the while crunchyroll is stuffing their pockets with millions they didn't do anything to earn, except sign a piece of paper that agrees to pay japan a couple thousand dollars for one time lisencing.

      that would just create a lot of fragmentation, what if i like a lot of shows from all of them, i don't want to pay for a lot of services to watch 2 shows from each one of them, this is why streaming services like Netflix got created in the first place

      There are already Legal Anime Channels that stream Anime series ON TH-cam!
      One being Muse Asia and Ani One, there's already a Japanese TH-cam channel that is releasing Anime from 70s(currently) to modern anime(not yet released).

    so let's see. A company that wants us to buy they're stuff's main argument for us buying their stuff is: "BUY OUR STUFF OR YOU'RE A BAD PERSON" instead of providing actual things that consumers want.
    in the words of Neo from the matrix: Wow, that sounds like a pretty good deal, but I think I have a better one: how about I give you the finger.

      It is not possible to provide the things that anime "consumers" want (i.e. "stream and download every anime ever for next to nothing") without losing money.

      You're not talking about consumers here. Consumers either pay for a product/service, or go without. Once people start obtaining those goods/services without paying for them, they become something else. This whole "boycotting by piracy!" nonsense is not an economic action by consumers; it is hostage-takers demanding the perfect getaway unicorn, but still getting to walk away even if they shoot their captives.

      @Zalis116 Pls tell me what the Japanese who watched it in free TV paid for the service?
      Exactly JUST their time to watch commercials.
      And keeping a streaming site running is way easier and cheaper than a TV Channel.
      Who needs a site with EVERYTHING? They can just make each their own streaming site with the 2 options of free streaming+ads or a paid download.
      And then they would make one BIG site (like kinox) that redirects you to the site of the anime you want to watch.

    Things Crunchyroll can do:
    1. Get a fucking video player that isn't dogshit
    2. Subtitles on dubs
    3. Add the entire anime, not just a couple seasons (I pirated One Punch Man Season 2 because Crunchyroll doesn't have it for whatever reason)
    4. Better servers so they don't implode whenever a new episode of a really popular anime comes out

    • @Zalis116
      @Zalis116 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Illegal sites already have non-dogshit video players, all seasons of any given anime (since they don't have to pay for licensing rights), and adequate servers. That doesn't change the "why should I pay for what I can get for free?" calculus.
      And pirates don't seem to actually care about "subtitles on dubs," since illegal sites not only don't have closed-captioning/dialogue subtitles for dubs, they often omit the signs/songs subtitles that legitimate dubs on legal services and DVD/Blu-Ray _do_ contain.

    This has been an ongoing issue even before legal streaming sites existed, and I can't say I don't understand why people take to the high seas to get their anime. Back when I first got into anime if it wasn't being broadcast on Cartoon Network the only way was to go to someplace like Boarders and buy the DVD. Now, I did that for a long time, but then I simply couldn't anymore. I have entire series on DVD... but let this sink in a bit. On DVD, a 52 episode series is broken down into 13 DVDS! 13 of them, sold at $25 a pop! That's $325 for a SINGLE SERIES! If you wanted to follow more than 1 show, you needed to be rich... and let's be honest here, back then most of the people who were anime fans were either people who refused to be SHAMED OUT OF WATCHING ANIME of people in High School and below! What high school kid just has $325+ lying around to drop on every anime they wanted to follow!
    Now, I will readily admit that streaming sites are much cheaper than this. But this has now become the way to get anime day-of for nearly 2 DECADES! While I understand the concerns regarding piracy I can only really say that the anime industry did this to THEMSELVES. Not to mention, most illegal streaming sites started up because it would take YEARS for anime to get ported out of japan to the rest of the world! No one wanted to wait that long, and even back then the anime industry wasn't so hurt for cash (obviously) that it couldn't have done a better job serving customers worldwide that wanted their product. They just didn't care enough to. Now, once the industry's international fanbase has grown exponentially and they aren't seeing the ROI to mirror that growth, it has suddenly become a massive problem to them! This is a perfect case of their own actions (an many times inaction) costing them in the long run.

    • @InnocentChuck
      @InnocentChuck 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I would imagine if it was that cost, one might as well just get the manga that the series they wish to follow is based off of at the local library. Even if one had to buy them it would still probably be cheaper.
