This channel is both a blessing and a curse! Every time I find a set of monitors I like I watch a different comparison and like a different pair more lol In all seriousness, though, thank you for all of this content. This is an amazing channel!
Hi! Today we take a look at two very popular studio monitors, Presonus Eris E5 and JBL LSR305. They are direct competitors and they cost more or less the same, so let's check which one is better! Build quality is slightly better in Presonus, it is a bit more compact and better looking, plus it has slightly more advanced tone controls which include additional high pass filter for easier blending with subwoofer. Front bass port in E5 means it is a bit more flexible regarding placement near the back wall. JBL on the other hand has slightly less hiss which is always nice. Soundwise they are very close, but some minor differences means that Presonus feels slightly more forward and clearer sounding, while JBL feels a bit better more pleasant and musical. Presonus has a bit more forward upper midrange which is the reason for more forward sound, but it also means that it is a bit tiring on longer listen. To my ear JBL has better bass response that reaches deeper and is a bit less boomy, while Presonus has around 10Hz less of useful extension, but masks that with slight mid and upper bass boost. Overall these two are great studio monitors well worth the asking prices, but I think that for someone looking for studio monitor for music listening JBL is a better choice, while Presonus will be more useful as a tool for music production. What do You think? Which one would You choose and why? Let me know in the comments below! Cheers!
Hi! So I really need to buy studio monitors to start my career in making music and these two speakers are the ones on my list, but I just can't decide! :D I'll be using them for music production and mixing, but I really like the sound of both of them. The music I'll be making is more like R&B, Jazz, Soul music. With Rhodes, electric piano and vocals. Any advice? The one I kinda like overall is the Eris, but if JBL would actually be better, then I'm all for it.
lsr 305 wins it for me. It's especially noticeable in the new orleans jazz track at 6:48. The horns sound scooped in the lower mids and also has more aggressive lower treble on the presonus.
After enjoying the E5 for a couple of months, I auditioned the JBL LSR3305 last night. JBL had a slight advantage because they were running through an Apollo DAC. Definitely a different sound profile. The JBL's sound noticeably 'fatter/rounder' with it's bass response. Sound great. The E5 however seem to have slightly better detail and soundstage. Definitely more forward mids and highs. Punchier bass as well. The E5's win on smaller footprint, front port, additional controls, and the better clarity/soundstage.
I can hear so few difference between the two, but I'd like to take into account my setting. The speakers should take place between the pc monitor an the wall, pretty near to the wall. The JVC has the bass reflex on the back while Eris on the front. This cuold be a good reason to choose the Eris. What do you think?
eris 5 is the clear winner, better mid range (overall richer and clearer sound) + low range sounds more defined and realistic (studio speaker like) compared to the jbl. jbl is somewhat hifi I guess
I have the Presonus Eris 3.5, very nice little speakers, but the only issue i have with them is the bass at around 100hz, it is too much and buzzy, I have to lower it with the EQ. I see that the Eris 5 has the freq. around 100 boosted as well, while the JBL is more controlled there and has better response at the lower bass, below 80-90HZ.
Vishal Adhikary in a bad sounding, or small room, I recommend worse monitors. If the mix sounds good on a bad pair of monitors, it should theoretically sound good anywhere else. Of those, I would personally recommend the Yamahas. If you are able to,pick up some Yamaha NS10 monitors, I think those would be even better.
I appreciate the recording quality and consistency of the tests, but why all tests involve playing utterly sterile music? I think playing something slamming, with big bass or busy midrange could help bring out the difference between speakers.
Survey: What are you using to listen to this video? I'm in my Studio listening on my AKG-271 headphones through my Focusrite Interface. Man, these monitors are close! Any chance you could stick WAV files on DropBox or something, and link them in the Description? Not for the videos you've already done, of course, but going forward.
I still can not decide between these two speakers to make boom bap music and house (I have a mpc 2000xl and a korg m1). can you help me. I feel that jbl color more sound so not great for music production. Only in my country they are on sale in all music stores (100 euros per piece). I hesitate. thank's from france.
I would get JBL, especially considering the drop in prices. When both speakers are side by side the differences are really small, but the extra depth in JBL's bass response will be usefull for the type of music You create
thank's a lot. Since yesterday the price to increase. now jbl are 112euros per piece against just 258 the pair of presonus. little bad luck. I think still take the jbl.
Presonus by far... Has much more accurate gramical and tighter sound. JBL has much more stereophony but lacks on details and unfortunetly you can hear clear the crossover.... also has boost on low freqs.
Adrian Ronald Sehat i saw in Lazada. Ubuy.com also they do postage as well since you’re not in KL but I don’t think dealers bring this model in here nowadays
In the song *full speed* th-cam.com/video/uCPHf46Ztoo/w-d-xo.html the Presonus is way better than JBL, the JBL is muddier, in general they sounded similar in some songs I liked more Presonus in others JBL
What an incredible test. How can we compare a Rolls car with a Renault car ? It's totally incoherent. Presonus is a brand that touches a little bit to everything, in no way a specialist in studio monitors, even small domestic monitors. First you have to analyze the power handling, see when everything collapses, after one hour, two hours, more ... then the transient frequencies, the precision and finesse of the treble frequencies after 2 hours , the quality of the bass and whether they drag at a specific frequency. Presonus is not expensive, but does not breathe the professional. Where do the loudspeakers come from ? mystery. Availability of spare parts ? I will end with a little professional culture. JBL is the inventor of the studio monitor. The JBL LSR 305 is the best in its class. Its high-level manufacturing is based on more than 60 years of experience and excellence. The sound quality on all frequencies is perfect. Impressive power handling for hours. The formidable JBL After Sales Service, the brand manufactures all its components including loudspeakers, the best in the audio industry. To finish second-hand resale, JBL does not stay on classified ads.
Hah you sure are a fanboy for JBL huh? That is a pretty funny description. And what kind of spare parts do you expect to need for servicing a pair of speakers that cost $100 a piece? I had to laugh at the 'Rolls vs Renault' comparison. You act like the JBL 305s arent just another plastic mass produced run of the mill product that isn't designed to be serviceable or last a lifetime. Your post is solely focused on imagined ethics of a brandname and has nothing to do with quality comparison.
Sold: Eris 5
Thank you for the comparison :)

I bought Eris E66. Thank you for your video.

Are you going to review the MK2 version of the JBL LSR305?
For now it is not available in my country. When it becomes available I will test it against the competition ASAP
which ones for mixing?
I'm looking for some budget friendly monitors

They have a pretty similar sound signature but the PreSonus plays it safe while the JBL tries to push the limits a bit more.
jbl sound more open, presonus gives more of tight clear image of what's going on
lsr 305 wins it for me. It's especially noticeable in the new orleans jazz track at 6:48. The horns sound scooped in the lower mids and also has more aggressive lower treble on the presonus.
yeah, it is doing much better in bass and soundstage, plus has overall balanced timebre.
Thank you for this comment
Jbl has alot of problems with weird signal sounds when idle. Alot of ppl has returned them for that

Did you observe a certain grittiness in the upper mids of the LSR's that add's some sizzle to the vocals? I'm debating over which one's to keep.

Pls compare Jbl nano k4
I like Presonus. Thank you for work!
I was looking for this comparison
eris 5 is the clear winner, better mid range (overall richer and clearer sound) + low range sounds more defined and realistic (studio speaker like) compared to the jbl. jbl is somewhat hifi I guess
JBL sounds more detailed and more like a mixing monitor.
Eris has a less detailed but smoother sound.
JBL LSR305 vs Presonus Eris e5 XT?

Do all studio monitors have a hiss to them?
Bro you deserve 2m+ subs...great work i like presonus
Please do a comparison between:
1) Presonus Eris e3.5 vs Mackie CR4.
2) Fluid Audio C5 vs Mackie CR5.
1) Soon
2) Not any time soon

FLUID AUDIO F5;
YAMAHA HS5;
PRESONUS ERIS E5;

Which one has flat response for mixing (almost all genres-mainly edm, hip-hop,trap,pop) ? My room (8feet * 12feet) has minimum acoustic treatment.

the HS5 are essentially 5inch tweeters. LOL
Vishal get the Kali Audio LP6.
Nice job... I am your fan. Could you compare Kanto YU4 please
I appreciate the recording quality and consistency of the tests, but why all tests involve playing utterly sterile music? I think playing something slamming, with big bass or busy midrange could help bring out the difference between speakers.

HS8
Both Presonus E5 and Audiotechnica ATH M40x headphones
The presonus is a good device but people have not noticed that it lacks information, it has a problem with very high mids and highs, it has no body.

there is a new jbl 305p version with small differences with jbl lsr305, you should check it before buying (lsr305 are cheaper than 305p)
Presonus by far... Has much more accurate gramical and tighter sound. JBL has much more stereophony but lacks on details and unfortunetly you can hear clear the crossover.... also has boost on low freqs.
Thank you for this video, I've made my decision! :)
Hakimi Aziz how to get any of these in Malaysia?
There are plenty of music shop that sells monitors, you can find in Times Square and somewhere around PJ. Search for Music Bliss or Burgercis

Adrian Ronald Sehat i saw in Lazada. Ubuy.com also they do postage as well since you’re not in KL but I don’t think dealers bring this model in here nowadays

Jbl is on another level
Presonus sounds more flatter than JBL
In the song *full speed* th-cam.com/video/uCPHf46Ztoo/w-d-xo.html the Presonus is way better than JBL, the JBL is muddier, in general they sounded similar
in some songs I liked more Presonus in others JBL
Can you do Presonus Eris E3.5" vs JBL 305P MkII 5"
Thanks
JBL zmiażdżył presonusy jeżeli chodzi o bass
