I'm 70, too, and I bought an Outback in April. So many ways you can build it up. I've set mine up for fast rides on mostly paved bike paths and trails. It's smooth!
Great treat, interview with Fergus from Ritchey! I bought a Swiss Cross 2 years ago, fantastic riding bike! I realized that my Ritchey bike could be my "swiss army knife bike" but concluded I have to buy an Outback Breakaway for that! So will sell 3 of my bikes and get the Outback! Loved your review on that green beauty!
Awesome interview. I love Ritchey's attitude and views on the biking industry… and certainly love riding my Outback. The review you did of it last year was what sealed the deal for me.
I'm riding also an Outback because of your review and must say, it is absolutely awesome. I use it for Commuting and Bikepacking. Wherever I go, it feels comfortable but fast. Such a nice bike. People with carbon bikes are often looking to me what bike i ride and are wondering why i can hold the speed with them.
Killer dope interview! Sucks about your crash and a speedy recovery! Broke my right clavicle and fractured my right scapula Xmas Eve and just came off the sling this week so it’s a humbling experience to say the least, well a speedy recovery to ya!
Amazing. All these years later I thought Ritchey had become just a name. Sort of like Bontrager and Fisher. My first mtb was a B'stone mb3 with logic tubing.
Love Love Love Ritchey! Tom is one of the Godfathers of MTBs! Kudos to Fergus, it's such a great brand, with amazing legacy and has been true to it's roots since day one. Here's to another 50 years!
Really enjoyed this Fergus is always tremendous value, bought my Outback after a few different reviews including yours and Russ at PLP so thankyou for that. Just starting to build it up over the next month Thanks Simon
I had a Colnago Master X-Light as my first high-end steel off the shelf bike. It rode decently, but I found a sale on a Road Logic and built one with the same parts off of the Colnago. Sold the Colnago. The Ritchey felt smoother, I think it was the carbon fork vs the steel Colnago fork, only variable I had, but it was noticeable enough the Colnago was quickly up foir sale and gone. It's a sleeper frame that people overlook, but it's a very good option for steel without going full custom.
Just want to add in that the front end of my 2018 Ritchey Logic (59cm - skyline blue version) is plenty stiff for crits compared to the last 2 top of the line carbon frames with tapered head tubes I raced over the previous 10 years. There is no tracking issues when slamming corners at speed - It really handles "on rails". I if could have anything changed it would be to add a little flex in the forks to take away some harshness over rough pavement. Because of this I started wearing padded gloves which have not worn in years. I may upgrade the all Ritchey cockpit to their carbon versions to build in some dampening. Other than this minor gripe I am happy with the frame.
I too love my Road Logic. Dura Ace wheels too. Ritchey carbon bars, stem , seatpost. Carbon hurts my back. Logic rides like a magic carpet next to my stiff Madone. Ride it often. Carbon hangs on hooks. Steel is where I started. 30 yrs and 8 broken carbon frames. I'm done
Currently I ride CO-Motion single and tandems. Getting ready to do an Accent build to enjoy the dirt in Bend. Thanks for this interview. Excited to get this one going.
Well done. Interviews like this one highlight one of the many worthy small bike manufacturers (compared to the ubiquitous big names like Trek, Specialized, Giant, etc.) in the world building excellent bikes for diverse uses. And hey, if you're aging out, an old boomer like me is really gone 😁
Hey! Hope your healing up quickly without too much hassle. I've done both left and right clavicles, left scapula and right acromioclavicular joint. Still riding! Not being a d#ck, just want to encourage that it will heal and you'll be riding soon.
I'm building up an Ascent now! A bit disappointed I couldn't get the og orange colorway, but maybe they wanted to get away from the "retro" vibe. Can't wait to actually ride it. My daily driver is a Miyata 615gt with triple butted, splined tubing, so I'm hoping the Ritchey captures some of that magic.
i have been building and riding bikes for over 50 years ,high end and low end ,trust me nothing comes close to a Ritchey steel frameset. Must be the "secret sauce" !!!!!
I knew I’d seen this guy before! I watched his video on how to wrap bars! I’d like your personal opinion diverge vs Outback. This video makes me want to swap my diverge out!
So you ruined the hubs on your new wheels from cleaning them, but that turned into a Hunt sponsorate. Now you have probably totalled your bikeframe and need a new one. In comes Ritchey :D The adventures of Bikesauce. Hope you get well soon man.
haha so cynical.. little fact checking here - the hubs weren't ruined, just crusty bearings. Not sponsored by Hunt in any way. After my crash, the bike was totally fine. Ritchey also not a sponsor. Thx!
💗💖💕💓💞❤ this! Keep up the great work and content! Love to see you furthering your reach. What's the latest on more merchandise so I can support you in other ways?
Great interview! If you had to choose between the Outback and Ascent, which would it be? Also, I hope their improvements to the Outback will be repositioning the cable as you suggested in your review.
Jon did you get a Ritchey? I brought a Swiss Cross and it's amazing. I keep waiting for the announcement of the mystery machine from Tom as well. I don't need another bike but it can't hurt haha
Professor sauce I was shocked to see your crash photo from the hospital. As one who has busted his left collarbone and right shoulder I am very compassionate. Did you have to get it pinned?
I fractured my scapular last June after hitting a groundhog on my (Ritchey Swiss Cross) bike. Also had some small muscle tears in my shoulder. It’s a slow recovery. Make sure you do your PT. Good luck.
I'm 70 and I'm not aging out--yet. Lol. I'm getting ready to buy my first Ritchey Outback.
Haha, age is just a number. Let us know how your build goes.

I ride a Ritchey Road !ogic. Have for 6 yrs and love it. My Trek Madone and other carbon bikes hang on hooks. Ritchey steel has Soul! Thanks Tom!
Rode it today. Love it.

Yes! I’ve been thinking about building one up ever since I reviewed it last year
I'm looking for something in between my ogre and my road bike. Its looking like outback will be it once I get the $$$

Fantastic interview! Really great to hear more in-depth about the magical workings at Ritchey.
Killer dope interview! Sucks about your crash and a speedy recovery! Broke my right clavicle and fractured my right scapula Xmas Eve and just came off the sling this week so it’s a humbling experience to say the least, well a speedy recovery to ya!
Dang. Common injury for cyclists, but never fun. Glad you’re healed up
Amazing. All these years later I thought Ritchey had become just a name. Sort of like Bontrager and Fisher. My first mtb was a B'stone mb3 with logic tubing.
Nice! Ritchey still has that small company vibe that I really appreciate.
Awesome chat, thanks! Can't wait to see the anniversary colours.
Heal up, my friend! Thanks for the interview!
Thx for checking it out!

I just got a Swiss Cross V2 disc 2 days ago! Love it so far. Been riding my Ritchey CX Breakaway Cross w/ canti brakes for a few years :)
Nice!! Happy new bike day

Ha thx Gregg. Age is just a number!
Dang, Dr Sauce got hurt.
Sorry to see that, Boss!
Quick recovery dude
Thx, Tim
Riding an Outback break away for a year. Sooo smooth. Incredible
This video was a bit of a sleeper. But amazing learning the history of such an important company. Ritchey rocks!
Hey! Hope your healing up quickly without too much hassle. I've done both left and right clavicles, left scapula and right acromioclavicular joint. Still riding! Not being a d#ck, just want to encourage that it will heal and you'll be riding soon.
Sheesh! You’re a warrior. Itching to get back on 2 wheels
I'm building up an Ascent now! A bit disappointed I couldn't get the og orange colorway, but maybe they wanted to get away from the "retro" vibe.

Very nice!
I think they are one of the few makers that understands that "stiffer = better" is silly. I mean, stiffer than what, the optimum?
Oh i forgot to add one of the best interviews i have seen
there's really something "magical" on the ride feel of ritchey's steel tubing, glad i still have my P29er, Outback and Ascent.
Didn’t know about your accident. Get that clavicle better soon. Enjoyed the interview.
I knew I’d seen this guy before! I watched his video on how to wrap bars! I’d like your personal opinion diverge vs Outback. This video makes me want to swap my diverge out!
ha. Such a narrow audience (Diverge vs Ritchey), but I may make that exact video if I end up building up a Ritchey.
Ouch! Hope you heal quickly!
Thanks!
Hope the shoulder is better man. Chilling with this one since I can’t ride ✌🏼
Thx, Beer Circles!

Can you get me. Ritchie Logic rim brake size 55 ?
Great !
Ritchey uses Tange Prestige steel tubes
💗💖💕💓💞❤ this! Keep up the great work and content! Love to see you furthering your reach. What's the latest on more merchandise so I can support you in other ways?
Thx Lance. Nothing at the moment. Brewing up some stickers and t shirt ideas
Great interview! If you had to choose between the Outback and Ascent, which would it be? Also, I hope their improvements to the Outback will be repositioning the cable as you suggested in your review.
Thx John. For my riding style, I’d probably choose the outback since I don’t mind a lower weight limit on the fork
where are ritchey bikes made?
Taiwan
Make a FS bike steel race rocket!! 80mm to 100mm in the back. I’d be all over it!
Sorry to see you in a sling! BTDT a few times. Get well! #slinglife
Ha thanks. Better every day
Love the vid but hate to hear about the fall!
Thx, Randy. It's not too bad. Better every day.
I can't decide between a Road Logic, Outback, or Ascent. Now there is a mystery machine that Tom Ritchey is dreaming up???
Tough choice. You've pretty much spanned the spectrum with those options. I may be considering one of those as well..
Outback- it incorporates good aspects of the Road Logic and Ascent
Jon did you get a Ritchey? I brought a Swiss Cross and it's amazing. I keep waiting for the announcement of the mystery machine from Tom as well. I don't need another bike but it can't hurt haha
@@ritcheydesign unfortunately on the XS outback, the trail is too big. Small size compromise.
Professor sauce I was shocked to see your crash photo from the hospital. As one who has busted his left collarbone and right shoulder I am very compassionate. Did you have to get it pinned?
Luckily no. Doc says 6 weeks and I should be ok. Getting better each day
@@TheBikeSauce good report that's what I had. No pins collarbone or shoulder.
second person (besides myself) that I've heard of to break their scapula. heal up!!
Thx, Andy. Few more weeks and back to new!
I fractured my scapular last June after hitting a groundhog on my (Ritchey Swiss Cross) bike. Also had some small muscle tears in my shoulder. It’s a slow recovery. Make sure you do your PT. Good luck.
Will do, thx!
Tom=jesus 😂
