a) the background of the Nagasaki bombing is well documented and publicly available if not well known b) saying they dropped the bomb against orders is a strong statement implying that someone dropped the nuke without any authorization while the actual story is far more complicated than that
With less than perfect weather conditions over Nagasaki, the bomb detonated almost 2 miles from its intended target in the Urakami Valley. This meant that a large part of Nagasaki was protected due to hills that confined the bomb’s blast. Damage to the city was not as great as the damage seen in Hiroshima. 2 miles!!! Hiroshima was off target by about 800 feet due to crosswinds. 2 Miles! Yeah they just wanted to drop they bomb and didn't actually see the target point.
your b is just wrong. It is not "like" what you said. They had "direct orders" and they went against them ... that is not the same as saying they "dropped the nuke without any authorization" as you have tried to say. Your post is a clear misrepresentation of what we saw in the video.
He says he does not know for certain at 05:20. I don't think this is over-confidence, it is just sharing a different perspective after some reading and research.
Adam Brown's story sounds shaky. But I would like to add one fact. The Purple Heart Medal I received for injuries in RVN 1969 was originally produced in anticipation of the invasion of Japan. New production of the Purple Heart was restarted in 2000.
Notice he claims both that Nagasaki was not a planned target and that there was a precise location in Nagasaki identified ahead of time as “the target,” which he claims was missed. Hard to believe this guy holds the position he supposedly has.
WOW! Do you know anything about military planning? Yes there were preplaned cities, yes exact targets in those cities were chosen. The target point for Hiroshima was the Aioi Bridge, a distinctive T-shaped bridge over the Ōta River in the center of the city. The atomic bomb exploded in the sky above Shima Hospital, which was located in Saiku-machi (now Otemachi 1-chome). The bomb's coordinates were 132 degrees, 27 minutes, 29 seconds east latitude and 34 degrees, 23 minutes, 29 seconds north longitude.
@ WOW! Did you watch the clip or read my comment carefully? I pointed out an inconsistency in the guest’s recounting of events. He both claimed Nagasaki was not a target and stated there was a planned, designated target in the city. Both cannot be true at the same time, further demonstrating the guest is full of it. Sad!
@@theophrastuscarnegie6242he doesn't say it wasn't a target though? He mentions that it was the *secondary* target for that mission, and that the original target was a completely different city, but nowhere in the video does he say it wasn't planned.
There were in fact only two atomic bombs on the island of Tinian, if more were decided to be dropped they would have needed to be shipped in from the States.
I think this guy's claim is dubious and based purely on a technicality. I think he was just looking for something to stretch to sound more dramatic than it is.
I'm skeptical, this counters more than just "prevailing wisdom" about the topic. Doesnt mean it's not true, i just need more sources before i fully incorporate into my understanding of the world. Convos like this are why im a Dwarkesh fan! Edit and the way he repeats that "50% of all nuclear bombs" stat, i dunno
Technically they were working on a third, as the core for that third bomb would become the infamous 'demon core' postwar, but as far as the war was concerned, yeah they basically only had two ready to go.
People who don’t believe in nukes (which im assuming you’re getting at) are the most fascinating of the conspiracy theory freaks. They’re like a zoo animal, a hideous deformed but fascinating zoo animal
So the U.S. should have let Japan take over India? They were already in Burma. Think about what you're implying here. The direct orders were not not drop unless you had a good visual and there was heavy cloud cover, so take this criticism with a grain of salt.
@@DrVictorVasconcelos You clearly don't know anything about the war. The Japanese took Manchuria, The Philippines, Dutch East Indies,, Malaya, Singapore, Burma, Thailand, Guam, Wake Island, and many Pacific islands.

The fact that he was willing to lie about there only being two bombs suggests he is willing to lie about other things.

50% of a sample of 2.
