  • Exploring the woods and trails around the castle was fantastic! The castle has this medieval charm, and the woods are just so peaceful and beautiful. It's a great place to just wander and relax.
Nestled atop a steep limestone cliff, Prunn Castle stands as a testament to medieval architectural grandeur. This historical fortress, first mentioned in documents dating back to 1037, was once owned by Wernherus de Prunne. Its history is rich, marked by various ownership and significant architectural contributions, especially from the Laaber lords, a branch of the Praiteneck family, in 1147. One of the castle's most striking features is its large Gothic hall on the first floor of the medieval palas tract. This hall exudes a noble and imposing aura, indicative of the castle's storied past.
Prunn Castle's historical importance is underscored by its cultural contributions, particularly in the late Middle Ages. Its prominence was cemented in 1566 with the discovery of the “Prunner Codex” by historian Wiguläus Hund. This significant find, the fourth-oldest complete manuscript of the renowned Middle High German epic, the Nibelungenlied, highlights the castle's pivotal role in medieval cultural heritage.
Additionally, the limestone rock beneath Prunn Castle serves as a popular climbing spot, offering twelve routes with varying levels of difficulty, some requiring advanced skills up to grade 9 (UIAA). However, to preserve the local avian population, this climbing area is closed annually from February 1st to June 30th for bird nesting.
Through the centuries, Prunn Castle has been a fortress, a cultural beacon, and now, a challenging playground for climbers. Its walls not only tell tales of past owners and medieval sagas but also echo the adventurous spirits of modern climbers.
