Honestly, I really don't mind if someone doesn't like their music. They do a lot of genres and there are songs for most people to like they can find in there, but that takes time and sometimes you don't want to invest the time into something you're not excited about on the first try and that's absolutely ok. I only have a problem when people hate on them for no reason and out of maliciousness.
That being said, I really appreciate that you're putting the time in to understand what it is about them that pulls in so many people. And you might end up just liking a few songs that are your style and never listen to the other ones again. I would like you to come out of this respecting them for what they've achieved and who they are to people. But you're right that knowing their story changes a lot about how one views their music. I was never a fan of rap for example and I don't like overly bubble gum pop either. But after getting to know them and becoming ARMY, I do struggle to name a song that I don't like. Even the ones that are not my style grow on me, because this group is my comfort (or at least one of the comfort things/people I have in this world).

Just a little choice if you want more sad songs from bts :
    1. The truth untold
    2. Louder than bombs
    3. We are bulletproof:the eternal
    4. Make it right
    5. Paradise

Suga, the one that was rapping first, has extremely raw and personal lyrics about his own mental health issues (depression/anxiety/OCD...) and all the members are known for their openness. BTS was/is a standout in "kpop" that they are willing to sing/rap about the hard topics that are considered taboo for a lot of other groups/artists. Check out "Magic Shop" live version and "00:00" (Zero O'Clock). For Suga... check out "The Last"

Mental health is a taboo subject in Korea, and they have the highest suicide rate among teens, and the elderly, in the world. BTS isn't just open, they're radical.

The thing with BTS is their discography really does go so much deeper than you'd think. It has layers and layers. At the surface there are outright bubblegum pop songs and club bangers. Fun if you like that kind of thing (and lots of people do!) but beyond that there are songs which go deeper and deeper, right down to songs which have genuinely made me stop in my tracks with a sudden intake of breath, suddenly wrenched sobs out of me I didn't know were in there, songs with lyrics that made me stop what I was doing, pause the track, and seriously think. They have more than 400 songs between them at this point, so even if you've heard a few that really isn't enough to judge.
I'm a grown adult, and I'd say my music taste is generally 'alternative' even leaning 'experimental'. I started off back in the day just liking BTS because their music videos and dance routines are so fun, but as I got deeper into their discography I found hidden gem after hidden gem and a lot of those songs made their way right into my regular playlists.
It's true that knowing their story and their personalities helps to deepen the connection with the music, but I'd say it's very much the music itself which I think is worthwhile. I'd also say their live performances are a big factor. There's something about the sincerity and personality they bring that just defies cynicism and is so rare in the pop music scene.
This might be kind of an off-the-wall suggestion, but I think a great way to get an idea of their individual styles is the series of 7 solo songs they did on 'Wings'. Wings is a concept album inspired by the novel Demian by Herman Hesse, so the songs are roughly inspired by that narrative, but at the same time they're deeply personal. They said they gathered stories from their own lives and put them in an order which could fit that narrative. The songs in order are:
    Begin
    Lie
    Stigma
    First Love
    Reflection
    Mama
    Awake
Also since you liked 'Come Back To Me' I highly recommend RM's whole album 'Right Place Wrong Person', that one gets genuinely experimental!

"Blue & Grey" is part of their album "BE". Be is their "pandemic album", produced and released during the harder part of it. This song started as as solo song by V, and as it went with the theme of the album (their feelings during those hard days) it was adapted for them all. The whole albums is amazing, lyrics-wise. The only exception is the final song: Dynamite, the full-English pre-release single which was their first #1 on the Billboard charts

BTS (and all of us) were devastated when covid happened and all our plans canceled, losing jobs, and just depressed in lockdown. They live for live performing, like it’s oxygen, that was taken away and also the huge plans for that year (when their impending mandatory enlistment was looming) including a huge tour, etc. BTS later eventually had to pick themselves up (even though they didn’t have to) to work on an album for the current times with songs they’ve been writing and have produced, coordinated the project, to sharing their thoughts and feelings during such a hard time. They released the album BE in November 20, 2020 and it meant a lot to us in trying to get through the hopelessness that was 2020 and forward. BTS is intentional when they put out stuff and choosing songs to perform that is right for the season. Anyway, I’m glad you watched this because I haven’t watched this performance in awhile and I was choked up.

As for your journey my advice is to take it however you want to and feels comfortable for you. Incidentally the one you said had ‘the voice of an Angel’ 9:13 Taehyung (known by his stage name V) was the co-writer, co-producer & co-composer of this song. It was meant to be on his mixtape but they decided to use it as a group song. 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

That wee angel is the writer of this beautiful story, his name is Kim Taehyung aka V. I think you would love his album Layover. Not pop music. I never thought I would get into K-pop, but here I am nearly five years later still watching people react to their music to see if they appreciate them as much as I do. I’m honest to admit the the ‘angel’ is my bias, I found the group because of him acting in a K-drama, (another whole new word to explore) his voice to me is the most beautiful and compelling, but this doesn’t take away my admiration of the group as a whole. They have worked long and hard to get where they are, from teenagers through their twenties, then, at the pinnacle of their success, they had to step back and face the ridicule of many, thinking that they would fail in their hiatus as solo artists, before being forced into their countries mandatory service in the military, unfortunately for their haters, they excelled as singular artists as well and even halfway through the last 5 members service they are still delivering to their fan base. As a group they are unparalleled, as human beings, they are incredibly exceptional. Please enjoy the journey through the rabbit hole that is BTS, it’s a deep one.💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

BTS's "Blue&Glay" is one of my favorite songs, too, because it is so deep and beautiful. There is a song called "Singularity" by V that is equally deep and thought-provoking. He doesn't have a nice high tone like Jimin, but rather a very deep and soft baritone voice.

As soon as you said their pop songs, I thought, oh, no. They did 3 English pop songs during the pandemic, for the sole purpose of lifting people’s spirits. Their songs tend to be very deep and heavy, with a lot of focus on mental health, social justice issues, teaching self love and acceptance. There are a lot of cultural issues they touch on. They span many genera, and pop is at the bottom of their list. Please give them a chance.💜💜💜. They spread more love and positivity in this world, than any group I have heard. And I am 67, so I have heard A LOT of music and artists through the years!

They don’t fall into the usual stereotypes that most commercial rap has, and the writing is absolutely beautiful. Social commentary, poetry, and raw thoughts and emotions. All of the members are equally talented, and they will change your mind if you give them a god honest good faith try. Thank you for giving them a chance

BTS drew me in with their personalities, their messaging, and the fact that I can really relate to what they are singing about. Most western music follows a formula of songs about hooking up, breaking up or f**king. Modern rap for the most part is about showing off your bling, f**king and violence-largly toward woman.
Until BTS found me in 2022 I hadn't really listened and enjoyed music. I just listened to the same classic rock songs over and over because the pop was white/shite and I'm not a fan of country western.
Both lyrically and the way they approach and create their songs is fascinating to me. There is so much footage (probly over hundreds of hours not just snippets here and there) of them going live and talking with fans about their music. This is especially true with the rap line, RM, Suga and Jhope.
There is sooooo much more to say but I've already written a novel.💜

It might be helpful to dip a toe into their solo songs to get an idea of how different they are from each other and from the songs represented when they are performing as 7 members.

They got you!! 😂 we did it ladies and gentlemen!! The thing about learning their stories, past and personalities to better understand and relate to their music is true.
But also if you know you don't like generic pop, dont listen to generic pop, it's that simple 🤷‍♀️ Bangtan truly has music for everyone.
I think you might like: "Life Goes On" (title track of the album that Blue and Grey is from, has an MV directed by one of the members and filmed in their dorm during the pandemic).
"Spring Day" (MV is a must).
"The truth untold" (vocal line song, has no MV, HIGHLY recommend the live performance, you can easily find one with eng subs).
Something that might convince you a little more to rap songs - "Outro: Tear" (written and performed by the rap line, please watch their live performance with eng subs!!!),
Some b-sides that you might like (watch live or lyric video): Autumn Leaves, Paradise, Hold me Tight, Home, Dionysus, House of Cards.
    Some solos songs:
    Singularity, Rainy Days (V),
Wild Flower, Yun, Around the World in a Day (RM)
    Lie, Like Crazy (Jimin),
    Awake, The Astronout (Jin)
    First Love, Snooze (Suga),
My Time, Standing Next to You (JK)
    NEURON, Blue Side (Jhope)
If you think it's a lot, it's only a tip of an iceberg 😂

I am a lifelong 80s alternative into alt-rock fan (think early The Cure to Foo Fighters, I'm 55) who always detested rap & pop...then seven years ago I accidentally watched/listened to BTS' "MIC Drop".... That was a turning point. I didn't like hip-hop, but dammit that song and their dancing blew me away because I'd never heard or seen anything like it
I swiftly went down the rabbit hole. The few songs you've listened to simply can't illuminate the depth, variety, and range of music in their discography. I'd love for you to continue your search, and yes they are just all-around great guys who were underdogs that got sh*t on by not only their own country, but also westerners - but they believed in each other, and their music, and kept going
    I'd recommend a tiny B-side song from RM's 2nd mixtape (2018, "MONO") titled "uhgood"
It's got those atmospheric synths that I'm nostalgic for in 80s British alternative music and is so vibe-y... It's a play on words because the Korean word that sounds to western ears like "uh, good" which means something positive, in their language means falling short or missing, something negative.... It's about the discrepancy between how RM perceives himself/wants to be, and the reality he acknowledges that he isn't that person at all
BTS made me love rap, but only their rap. I actually enjoy the switch-up in songs when the rap comes in! To me, it's something new and refreshing in my ear, breaking up the normal flow and being different from other artists' songs. Plus, with seven members, you get all-group songs, solo songs, and songs with units of 2, 3, or 4 members so the variety they are capable of is endless. It's a welcome reprieve from hearing the same ONE voice in a song over and over like you get with other artists on their albums.

I feel you on slow songs that include rap breaks (and I grew up in the 90's which was rife with r&b featuring rap bae, or rapper featuring r&b bae). I like that BTS rappers tend to adjust to the feel of the song (rarely does it feel jarring with them, bc of this). Also, I do like rap, and I love each of these 7 guys so I look forward to each of their parts. But I have to admit that my favorite is when the vocalists harmonize with the rapline. They can all do it all.

I think diving into their story as a group and each member’s individual story will definitely help you connect to the music better. I also think you might enjoy doing album reactions rather than picking one song at random to react to. BTS are very much album artists so it helps to listen to their albums top to bottom to understand the story they’re telling. And usually, they’re telling you their personal life stories in the music. Their thoughts, feelings, memories are all right there in the lyrics. They also usually pack 10 different genres into every album so if you don’t like the pop song off the album, you might like the ballad or the r&b song off the album.
I’d recommend going through their “The Most Beautiful Moment in Life” album series or their “Love Yourself” album series. The albums are listed below in order, some of them are compilation albums so you’ll get some repeat songs. I would recommend listening to those songs again even though you’ve already heard them because again, BTS usually tell a story through the album and the repeat songs are part of the story.
    - The Most Beautiful Moment in Life Part 1
    - The Most Beautiful Moment in Life Part 2
    - The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: Young Forever
    - Love Yourself: Her
    - Love Yourself: Tear
    - Love Yourself: Answer

Don‘t worry - BTS and the members did a lot of songs of different genres - you‘ll find the right songs for you. Just go on and enjoy the journey - love from an ol ARMY from Berlin 💜

Blue and Grey is a beautiful song. V (Kim Taehyung) is the other gentleman who’s voice you like. He is a baritone that doesn’t have a problem hitting high notes . That’s why he is the member known to have the widest vocal range . Notice how he switches from low to high voice effortlessly . (The other one that you like is Jimin. For me both V and Jimin has the most unique voice).
V wrote this song and planned to include it in his Album but upon hearing it, the group wanted to include it in the BTS album. The rappers wrote their “rap” part for it.

Since you prefer just the vocals, try truth untold & house of cards. Also, a ton of people who don’t like rap started liking their rap. Because of the sincere lyrics and how they incorporate it to the rhythm of the song. One of those is my dad. 😅. He hated rap, says it’s just noise. But he loves BTS rap.

Listen to BTS's "The truth untold", "House of cards", "Zero o'clock", "Film out", "Let go", "Jamais vu" (Jungkook, Jin and J-hope), "Lie" (Jimin), Abyss (Jin) and some solos like RM's "Uhgood", J-hope's "Blue Side", Agust-D's (aka Suga) "Snooze". There are so much more so the road will be long. And always have the lyrics on because the messages are much more deeper than you expect to be. Have fun.

K-pop is an industry, you have learned that, right? Not a musical genre, it encompasses many musical genres.
BTS does have a lot of ballads, most songs will have rap verses--modern poetry to a beat--since the main songwriters in BTS are the 3 rappers. T he words mean something. To appreciate BTS often involves more than a listen, since they write their music framed in a different culture. Idol and Ugh, for instance, need some explanation. Sometimes their songs refer to issues in Korean society BTS is hoping to heal. Save Me, I'm Fine, Not Today, even Magic Shop...South Korean youth have the highest suicide rate in the world. Spring Day can be just a song about missing a friend--or you can look at the context of the music video, South Korea's political acts following a great tragedy, the social upheaval. BTS' bravery in even releasing the video due to threat of being blackballed. A much deeper understanding. But you'll know why the song has never fallen off the Korean music charts. BTS is meant to be understood on a deeper level, except for the occasional fun (like the covid trio) songs to cheer people up. Sometimes the 'fun' songs have an edge. Another reactor ahs described them as lethal poets.
I don't have a fav member, but fav songs--Mikrokosmos, Zero O'clock(ballad), Magic Shop, ON.
