Bigger diameter wheels on the thing itself would help, I think. That would speed it up on the road and lift it a few more inches above the corn as you drive through.
@@londonwestman1I’m not that familiar with hydraulic drive mechanisms. Would taller tires affect the gear ratio? Or is that not an issue with this drive system?
It's all big, giant, expensive machines that you depend on. It's not like you're doing 40 acres and a mule. Unless you have to call in a specialist, you do nearly all of the repairs yourself. I'm truly impressed that you work so patiently to get things back on track. You are one very even-tempered crew.
So glad to see the new (old) machine.I've had 2 back surgeries and need another one now, Laura, my back hurts every time I see you lifting those heavy gear boxes, pivot wheeis and other heavy objects. Everytime I see you lifting them I pray that you don't injure your back. Believe me it is not fun having to lay up for 6 weeks after each surgery. Hey Grant, when your backing up your rig to hook up to a trailer like that you can dump the air in those rear axles to get them down another 6 or 7 inches. Not a big deal but something to keep in mind for next time.
@TassyDeval Only the old spring ride suspension rigs from the 60's & 70's can't dump their bags, for obvious reasons. That rig has bags and they weren't dumped but Grant probably just doesn't drive a semi often enough to know all the ins and outs.
Super handy machine. A little sketchy that the crane could rotate into the cab if it's not raised, and careful of swinging a load out to the side because there's no counterbalance in that direction. Love the ingenuity!

My wife and I just took a driving trip which included a drive through Ogallala, McCook and Kearny. One thing you can't get from your videos is the sheer size of the fields you are working in. We were stunned by how huge they were! No wonder harvest takes so long.
That HAGIE 400 is funky looking but appears to be a piece of equipment that will really benefit and assist in the efficiency of your operation. The trolley chain hoist additon would be a good itdea for the crain. Additionally with a little thought and work, I suspect you can modify it crain portion to be sufficent to lift the pivot as Grant mentioned. The possibilities are endless! The workbench is really cool! The first thing I would do is tie that crane into the frame somehow to make it stronger. Find something to fit over that vertical pipe a little over half way up so the pipe can still pivot inside of it, and then weld a square tube from that piece at an angle down to the frame somewhere above the tire on each side. That would make it more stable. Looks like the crane is pretty fast. Maybe put an orifice or a flow comtrol valve in line to slow it down a little. Then, mount some old cylinders under the frame somewhere inside each front tire with a good sized base so you can put them down like an outrigger to take the weight off of the tires and rims and stabilize it when you are lifting something with the crane. Then, plumb a single spool valve and a set of quick couplers into the hydraulic system up front somewhere, and then take an old hydraulic cylinder and build a jack of some sort. Maybe mount it in a telescoping pipe with a base and a top with some hoses to reach from the pivot back to the machine and use that to lift the pivot instead of that incredibly dangerous handyman jack. Those things should be illegal. Build a rack on the back to carry your pivot tires and drive motors. Geez! I could have a ton of fun building that thing up with you guys this winter! Good luck with it, and have fun fixing it up to fit your needs!
Really enjoyed the Rusty Trailer Blue's! Just a thought. Keep magnets on your machinery. You can put them anywhere, and they're great for holding parts, tools etc..
You should look at getting some flued film or equivalent to spray on the mounting services of the tires to reduce rusting between the hub face and the tire.
Anti-sieze on the studs helps get the lugs to come off easier by applying to the studs. I use it on alot of stuff i need to come back off. Just a tip from a trucker/ mechanic. Love ur channel.

Well now that is definitely a red neck rig there. Which means two things. 1: you need to check all the welds and make sure that they are still good after sitting. 2: It won't be pretty, but it will be functional! As others have already said, yes, you are correct about the trolly chain hoist. It would work great! Also, if you put an anchor point near the middle/or as close to the ram as is useful on the beam. Then I bet that it would lift that pivot no problem. Of course you will need to fix the mount plate first. Great find!

I 100% agree with Grant that you shouldn't trust that crane to lift anything heavy. I'm wondering if you should shorten the I-beam so it doesn't have so much leverage on the base of the crane. Yeah it wouldn't have as much reach but with that much I-beam on there it would be very easy to overload the base and break it, which has already happened. That unit is going to be very handy around the farm but it's going to need a lot of massaging to make it dependable and safe.

Have this unit a look over after harvest. Perkins is known to use the glow plugs at starting. Putting cables on a battery: plus first than min. Taking off its oposit. And like someone else already mentioned put an Electric chain hoist in the boom and generator on this unit. So you can weld as well.

Grant you got that loooook!! As you get older you will learn don't say anything just turn around and run!!!! Love the videos. Stay safe and HARVEST ON!!!
Thats a very handy machine you got there....great job....stay safe and see you soon
Great video. Someone put a lot of thought and work into that Pivot Service Machine. I can't wait to see you repair and trick it out.
I can’t believe how much easier this is now, thanks!
I'm glad you all are making work easier for yourselves. A crane also to lift the frame up on the pivot to change the tires instead of using a jack! Money well spent!
Have this unit a look over after harvest. Perkins is known to use the glow plugs at starting. Putting cables on a battery: plus first than min. Taking off its oposit. And like someone else already mentioned put an Electric chain hoist in the boom and generator on this unit. So you can weld as well.
👍 The right tools to work smarter instead of harder.
You need to salvage a crane from a wrecked truck to replace that I-beam contraption, and add pivot lift capability. Seems pretty handy even as- is.
Excellent tool! 👏👏Looking forward to the winter shop videos of you all restoring and improving this machine (I know the wheels have to be turning already in your heads.) 🤣😂
Worth every dime!
Oh to be young and beautiful again. It would be so fun to ramp up the modification of this vehicle. I see an easy lift mod to add another foot or so to the height. The ideas are endless.
Thanks L&G and Gage For Bringing Us All Along enjoyed the Video!!
Keep Smiling On!!
😅👍👊❤️
Perkins diesel engines have been around for awhile. Some mod.'s to the crane, this unit will be a very versatile and useful machine. Outstanding find.
Put a platform on the sprayer so you can also use it to detassle corn.
Pivot maintenance old sprayer previously owned by tall skinny farmers. Mrs Perkins is at it again as new hieghts are possible.
