  • Islam Unveiled (Religion Documentary) | Real Stories
Can Islam ever truly become part of the modern world?
Why is a religion that claims over a billion followers across the globe now seen as the world’s greatest bastion of sexism and misogyny? And is this true?
This major series takes the viewer on a dazzling ride across four continents and fourteen centuries, embarking both on a journey of the heart and a quest of the intellect. It is a quest that reveals surprising truths about women’s lives in the Muslim world today, and traces back to their cultural roots beliefs and practices that to many Westerners seem cruel and archaic.

The problem with religious people is that they think they are worshipping God, but they are in fact worshipping their religion. Religion should be a guide to better life and to bring you closer to God for your own good. Bring you closer to God so you don't fear, so you don't feel lonely, so you don't hurt yourself or others. But most people don't recognize that. Religions were made in specific times and they came to people with certain cultures. They were adapted to their own culture as long as their practices weren't harmful to society. We are not the same people as them. It's been centuries since the creation of most religions. These people are worshipping those religions because they can't question and leave behind any of it.

The 42 minute mark conversation really hits the nail on the head: Men have a difficult time controlling their gaze toward women who show any part of their body, so, naturally, they are made to hide it instead of addressing the problem itself, men's behavior. In this line of thought Islam is clearly in its own.

I wholeheartedly agree. Thats why I don't believe in infant or child baptism. In the faith of my childhood you get baptized at age 8. Much too early in my opinion. Christians should wait until thier child is at least in thier late teen so they can fully understand the choice they are making, instead of getting baptized just because all their peers are doing it and the child has been taught since birth to be excited for this ritual.
I think this is one thing the Amish get right - they get baptized at around 18 years old

You don't have to force when you brainwash them from childhood onward and make them think it's normal... what most girls wear or "should" wear.
I m from Finland and while here girls and boys are 100% treated equally sometimes I see kindergarden group where some muslim small girl is wearing nijab. Is it her choise to wear that weil? Gertainly not but she don't guestion it because her parents have put it on her from early on.
It's not her choice either to take it off, she wears what her parents put on her and maybe later is already so used to wear it than just to please her parents as a "good muslim girl" keeps wearing it. And it's not her choise that at some point her parents bring her to Somalia or other Islamic country to cut her clitoris off either ..but in many cases it's still happens.

These women don't want to be judged for wearing a hijab but then turn around and judge western women, and labeling westerners like we are not spiritual and no morals. I'm just wondering when people who practice strict religious practices whenever and where do any teachings say they have the right to judge, and put down others not like themselves?? I see this both ways, whether it's westerners judging women who wear hijabs, or Muslim women who wear hijabs and judging westerners who don't.
So many people no matter what background they are from stereotype and generalize others. Ignorance is everywhere, in every culture sadly. I'm proud to say I'm a westerner who is loyal to my husband who I've been with for several years. I don't flirt and mess around with other men, but I don't wear a hijab, and I'm very spiritual, praying several times a day, and I do meditations. I'm not focused on money and power. My sister is faithful to her husband who she's been with for over 25 years, and they are not obsessed with money and power. My mother was married to my father for over 35 years, but then he passed away. None of the women in my family wear hijabs. We are faithful to the man we married, and we practice our own spiritual paths. It's all on individuals and their mentality. I've seen some women walk around all covered up, and act completely the opposite to what they appear on the outside. If you choose to cover your hair, and body that doesn't automatically deem sainthood, if your actions are completely the opposite. I don't care how religious and devoted you are, if you're judging others simply because they don't look and act like you, your actions are no better than someone without morals. It just shows hypocrisy.

I found them very disrespectful of me as a black woman, and what's more, they were or are as racist as the most racist white American. A man's religion or a woman's religion is their own choice. But I have no patience for those who dedicate to me and denigrate my choice of my God. The fight between the Muslim and the Western World Is not for justice, equality, peace, or progress. From my experience, I have seen that it is for Domination. You can share my country, my workplace, and my freedoms, but I reject a God who says you have a right to take them from me! I came from a position of absolute love towards the Muslims but they, not the white man have driven me away from them. I have two master's degrees, but yet the Muslim men I worked with treated me as if I were a common streetwalker undeserving of any kind of human consideration. Praise your God. Wear your clothes. But do not champion the right to destroy my life, because I call my God a different name. If the West is so bad, then stay in the east. But because of their behavior and their treatment of this black woman, I say, "stay out of my life." Stay away from my God. And we will be able to live on this Earth in peace. What God is this that gives these men the right to destroy my life because I am not a Muslim and I do not wear a bandana on my head? I serve a kind, God. Serve yours, but leave me in peace. That is what the religion is about, its sole purpose, and it is what was said by Muhammad to be divinely commanded by Allah. To spread throughout the entire earth to all countries where Islam is THE ONE AND ONLY religion. This is why we non-Muslims do not want Islam spreading into our countries or our lands. Not only because of the things Chinalights said in her comment above, but also just look at the 50+ Islamic countries presently. Sure, you can point to a couple here and there, such as Bosnia and Herzegovina, that share some similarities with non-Islamic countries that are good in terms of a few personal freedoms. But the majority of places where Islam dominates there is little to no freedom. This is why people in non-Muslim countries who know about even a small portion of Islam don’t want it in their countries. Other religions don’t really have issues with assimilation, but Islam is incapable of assimilation and you see problems arise wherever Islam goes because its goal is complete domination.
These are sad facts that I wish were untrue, but, unfortunately, they are true.

@@bskee001 sorry i thought it would be assumed that i meant religious discrimination in a more broad sense, so yeah i guess you have me there. Doesn't really change my point as religious discrimination is still a form of discrimination like racism and sexism, and to discriminate a bunch of people based on the actions of fraction of the overall population of said community makes you a discriminator. Not sure where you're getting your facts from, but i'm pretty sure you point can be made about almost any group or people. Conservatives would probably prefer the world to retain conservative values, as liberals would probably want the world to hold their values. The Quran actually has a surah id like you to reflect on to dull your ignorance. Surah Al-Kafirun "O ye that reject Faith!
I worship not that which ye worship,
Nor will ye worship that which I worship.
And I will not worship that which ye have been wont to worship,
Nor will ye worship that which I worship.
To you be your Way, and to me mine." Quite simply your augments can be made about any major religion. Look at the hindus in india right now, and how they want their country to be a purely hindu state, burning churches, temples, and mosques. Where's the freedom for the religious minorities there? Or how about the european take over of the americas. Mass conversion of native children to have a purely christian based state. Or even the slave trade that built the very foundation of america, they had to give up their religion and culture to be renamed and owned. By your own definition hinduism and christianity are about 'domination' (which i do not believe is true).

Seems like to me you have more of an issue with a boss or co worker than an entire almost 2 billion people on earth. Your situation is personal and your views are narrated on a few or certain individual that demeaned you or made you feel less of yourself and bad. It’s not right how they’re treating you or what they did to you, but it also is bad and doesn’t make any logical sense to group and stigmatize an entire 2 billion people on earth, millions who also do live in the west and live western lifestyles.
Martin Luther King Jr, who as you know is black and fought against racism, stereotypes and oppression of an entire people subjugated just like how you’re illogical rationalizing what happened from an individual, as an entire peoples, said it best as a practice to live by: judge not by the color of their skin, but the contents of their character.

And there will be no fear for them, nor shall they grieve.”
      (The Holy Quran 2:62 )
The cousin of the Prophet Mohamed and leader of the Muslims after the Prophet, Imam Ali states “Know that people are of two types: they are either your brothers in religion or your equals in creation.” (Nahjul Balagha, Sermon 53). Meaning that all people, no matter what religion, race, or class they come from, are supposed to be treated equally, because either people are your Muslim brethren or your equals in humanity who have the same rights as you and cannot be discriminated against or disrespected for their beliefs. In fact, to disrespect another religion is explicitly condemned in the Quran; “Do not abuse those whom they worship besides Allah” (6:109). If a person claims to be Muslim, he is not allowed to insult or disrespect another religion. This is forbidden according to the Quran.
Islam is very capable of assimilation. Please come over to Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and see how we all live together, wholly respecting each other's faiths.
And on a side note: I never had a Muslim knocking on my door trying to convert me. I did have some Christians bothering me though.

I'm not gonna watch the documentary bcs I already know it's gonna be about the Arab countries with tyrannical leaders who were CHOSEN BY AMERICA (and who aren't actually Muslim). And it's not going to actually be about Islam.
But if you wanna know how Muslims could exist in "a world of science", I'll give you some examples in the Quran.
"Do the disbelievers not realize that the heavens and earth were ˹once˺ one mass then We split them apart? And We created from water every living thing. Will they not then believe?"
      - 21:30 (big bang and water)
"then placed each ˹human˺ as a sperm-drop in a secure place,
then We developed the drop into a clinging clot, then developed the clot into a lump ˹of flesh˺, then developed the lump into bones, then clothed the bones with flesh, then We brought it into being as a new creation. So Blessed is Allah, the Best of Creators"
      - 23: 13-14 (stages of development)
"He is the One Who shows you lightning, inspiring ˹you with˺ hope and fear, and produces heavy clouds."
      - 13:12 ("heavy clouds")
"And We sent down iron with its great might, benefits for humanity,"
      - 57:25 (sent "down" iron)
"And He is the One Who created the day and the night, the sun and the moon-each travelling in an orbit."
      - 21:33 (sun and moon orbit)
"And your Lord inspired the bees: “Make ˹your˺ homes in the mountains, the trees, and in what people construct,
and feed from ˹the flower of˺ any fruit ˹you please˺ and follow the ways your Lord has made easy for you.” From their bellies comes forth liquid of varying colours, in which there is healing for people. Surely in this is a sign for those who reflect."
      - 16:68-69 (female pronoun for worker bees and honey in their bellies)
"Not ˹even˺ an atom’s weight is hidden from your Lord on earth or in heaven; nor anything smaller or larger than that, but is ˹written˺ in a perfect Record."
      - 10:61 (particles smaller than an atom)
      "a lying, sinful forelock"
      - 96:16 (frontal lobe of brain)
"And We have made the sky a well-protected canopy, still they turn away from its signs."
      - 21:32 (the sky's protection)
      , etc.

How is it fair that in Iran, little girls of 9 years old have to take on the FULL responsibilities of Islam, pray 5 times a day, fast ALL DAY for Ramadan and boys just languish about doing none of this until they are approx 13-15 ???? This kind of practice sets up boys with a sense of privilege and entitlement, which often turns nasty when said boy grows up. Think: male privilege, male dominance in every area that matters, misogyny, domestic abuse, blame the woman....and Iran's judicial system supports this mindset in everyway it can. Sharia law. The way I understand the young Muslim women in the UK, it's precisely the idea of having a choice and being able to act upon it. Wearing the hijab is their choice, that's their freedom. What matters, in my opinion, is that the same amount of freedom be extended to the women in strict Muslim countries. They deserve the same power over themselves to be able to choose whether to wear the hijab or not.

'muslim countries' aren't even muslim. as a muslim myself i used to think these countries were great. but religion isnt practiced as widely as you may think. just like every non muslim country, culture plays a bigger role unfortunately. and these cultures are extremely toxic. to date, if any country is a muslim country its only Afghanistan. and afghan women love, and choose to wear the blue burka, even though its not mandatory like in pakistan. they come and wear that and are the only women wearing it there. Iran is the worst country ever, majority of the population isnt even Muslim yet that whole cultist government oppresses the whole country by using the name of Islam. but in general, fabric that covers the body will never be as important as other things that go on in countries. Islam gave muslim sharia law, but is there even a single country in the world who practice it correctly? nope.

This was quite interesting and well done. I wish she had left out comparisons to Christianity because it seems she does not really understand certain things. For instance, religious marriage must be entered not as a contract because it is seen as more than a contract. There is no money agreed on in the event of divorce because the couple should be entering the marriage thinking it is forever. Of course, divorce happens, but that is not something that should be spelled out in some sort of contract.

iran doesnt "demand" the hijab, many women dont even wear hijab in iran. They just have a modest dress code. Its clear the goal of islamophobes when you target headscarves, when these women are also "forced" to cover their legs and chest (because hijab is about covering yourself and dressing modestly, headscarves is just a small part of hijab). Western countries also have a dress code but its the opposite to muslims, in any industry you will see that women are expected to wear tighter and more revealing clothes than men. You want to see perversion but you dont want to sound perverted so you pick on a clothing that has been politicized rather than saying "why cant they wear tight clothes and show their legs". Note that modest dress is a part of their culture, and the government forces people to respect it in contrast to the Shah who tried to force western culture. We all have our own cultures, just like you dislike the thought of muslims imposing their lifestyle on europe remember your people forcefed your culture on muslims for centuries.

I am getting sick and tired of our islamic veil being targeted by western media. It's genuinely insulting. We are MUSLIMS. A muslim is someone who practices islam - which is submitting your eill to The Creator snd in that you find piece. We do this by what we avoid consuming/doing - halal/haram. Allowed or forbidden. Such as eating halal, avoid consuming alcohol which is haram. Just an example. So as muslims we live by living halal and avoiding haram, whether it comes to our 5 daily prayers, how and what we consume, how we address peoples, our wifes rights our husbands rights our children&parents rights, avoiding usuary, how we DRESS. I dont understand hoe ehen it comes to hoe we dress, people have the audacity to speak on it. We are obeying Allah. Our Creator when it comes to when we practice islam. If Allah made it clear something is obligstory to do - we do it. End of its as simple as that, it doesn't matter what other people say etc. We are here to obey and follow the guidance from The Most Wise. If we slip up, Allah is merciful, we repent and do better, simple. (Unless you owe someone then you need to repay your debt as that is fair to them). But Allah has made it clear how we dress is obligatory, what we eat, how and when we pray. That's it. Now quit trying to victimise us muslim women constantly wanting us to strip ourselves of our clothing. It's creepy & weird the arrogance you have to look at us with pity is insulting.

On a hike in Hasting , my son( at that time he was 12) and I stambled on " clothes optional" beach. As we came down by a very hard trail down a hill, we meet a nakid man cleaning that beach . My son got very ambarassed and wanted to leave straight away, but i needed a rest before going back the hill.
I asked the man if there was easier way to get back up, and had a general conversation about weather, Hastings and a history of the Nudist beach. While my son got angry and storm away infront of me.
He asked me: mummy how could you talk to him, he was naked!
I said: because I always look in the eyes of people that I converse with. It matters not what they wear or not wear.
We been back on that beach this year, ( my son is 16 now) , he felt comfortable and greated people and chat to those who chatted to us.
He grown up a good human, he looks in an eyes of people he speaks too. It matters not if person wears hidjub or have no clothes at all, he respects people for everything they are with all the differences and cultures and beliefs they have.

Such a great way to raise your child, MashaAllah! ♥ unfortunately, it's not the case with the majority of men and women :( The Quran actually addresses this matter before the case of the Hijab by ordering men to lower their gaze. And did not tell the women to cover because men can't control themselves. This documentary is very misleading because it doesn't show Islam, it shows a Masculine community.
Please Watch some real videos talking about Islam. Recommendations: Mohamed Hijab, Mohamed Ali, Omar Souleyman, Ali Dawah.
Take good care! Wish you the best! ♥

The British Muslims who don’t make the headlines is so sad. These people are amazing and should be massively respected. Shagufta is awesome ❤️ secularism is a MUST in the West especially the UK, all must embrace this else there is no place here for those who don’t. No religion is above another and all religions MUST be kept separate from state laws! God Bless 🙏❤️

Honey many many girls who left Islam including my friend Noor Al Maliki were honour killed by their families for leaving their religion.
So let's not try and say how open minded y'all are.

@@personaldove my mom has let me take off my hijab many times and even tells me to wait until I really want to do it. Sorry that some people in our religion are bad like other religions have bad people but my family would never do that. If they were true Muslims, their families would just leave them alone

When in Rome...?...what I can never get my head round is when ppl come into a country seeking asylum they want to try and change the system they're seeking asylum in to the system they are fleeing from, not to mention the fact they don't integrate into the society and choose to live separate communities and totally change the demographic of the area

That means they are not seeking “asylum”! They are invading. There plenty of rich Muslim countries to seek asylum in! The West is not their only option!

The whole "when in Rome ..." phrase is rather pointless as there are countless missionaries who travel to other countries to change the natives way of life. I mean, isn't that how most Western countries gained dominance over African countries? Because they were here to " TeAcH tHe UnCiViLiZeD" 🥴🤦🏾‍♀️ these girls aren't harming ANYONE but living their lives... unlike others...
Also, how should they "integrate into the society"? I'm assuming you prefer them to forgo their religious beliefs & follow western culture? Why can't they exist in their space, follow western life (to a certain extent) while granting them their right to do whatever else they want; as long as it's isn't illegal. Why integrate with a society we know will judge them for their beliefs??

You can't say "It`s not Islamic" if it's in the Hadiths. You can't just cherry pick only that which aligns with your views. You either accept it or leave Islam. God hates hypocrites .

I am an american ,82. I remember when the U S was a modest. Country and people did use foul language.
In the US the 60’s began a change in our. Culture. The internet has also contributed to the loss of morality and values, social media etc. The darling young college students in the first part of this docu. May just want boundaries and to feel more secure. I’ll watch the rest, i really respect Islam and think if it was not radicalized ,ie: jihad murder, men mistreating women and girls and women going to school. Etc i would value it more, so i’ll watch the whole program.

I can relate to the articulate young women at the start of the documentary. They speak from the soul not from expectations of Western nor Eastern societies. I bet you save seen so many evolutions of ppl !!!
