    The only problem I have with the black magic cameras is that when is out of warranty there’s no parts for it so you literally have to get a new camera. When it decides not the power on anymore. Black magic does not make any replacement parts for any of the cameras

    "Many people think that these are just for show" - proceeds to use circular filters, effectively making the matte box "just for show"
    Not saying matte boxes are just for show, but this one definitely is.

    • @jacksongary
      @jacksongary 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matteboxes are great to help with flares, even if you're not using mattes.

    • @MichaelManus
      @MichaelManus 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@jacksongary Sure, but the sigma 18-35 comes with a lens hood (like every zoom lens) which is far more effective than the matte box at blocking flares in situations like this, because it was designed specifically with that lens's image circle in mind.
      Also, all his clips show him shooting outside. It's easy to predict what direction the light is coming from, because it's always coming from the sun, so if you reeeaaally don't want flares then don't shoot towards the sun, otherwise you're going to get flares regardless of what type of matte box or lens hood you're using. There's no situation where adjusting the top flag will help him with flares more than the lens hood that comes with the lens.
      As far as blocking light goes, matte boxes are most useful in situations where you have lots of different light sources, and no time/ability to control them. Example: shooting a narrative indoors. Space/time limitations might make throwing a side flag on the camera faster/better looking than panning a light or blocking out a window.
      Bottom line:
      Filters? Lighting your production? Lens kit? Matte box.
      Screw on filters? Filming in sunlight with no modifiers? Photography zoom lens? No matte box.
      This matte box is pure fluff. Same with the wireless follow focus. In a professional environment; if a production doesn't require a piece of gear to be on the camera, it will not be on the camera. Simple as that.
      Source: Professional cam op and cam assist, I've used plenty of matte boxes with plenty of DPs in plenty of different lighting situations.

    I've used Sony for as long as I can remember and last year I had to film a documentary with the Pocket 4K. It surely is a different beast and comes with its limitations, but the picture it produces, oh man, it's incredible. I probably won't just to BM anytime soon, and I'm gonna stick with Sony, but for story driven content, the Pocket brings out the best of most cinematographers in my opinion. Great video, Ryan! Some people say it doesn't do well in low light but, the camera does if you use the false color and shoot at 1250 iso. At least for me. At 1250 I have been able to record footage at night with little to no noise. Though this is with the pocket 4k, I'd imagine the 6k can do the same if not better.

    i liked your video to a specific point, good mellow vibe and all, im glad you got into the Blackmagic Camera World, but in the last 2 Minutes you actually made 3 critical errors, that should be corrected, at least in the comments. I understand you are new to the camera, so its natural to make some mistakes. 1. Its not an insane camera in low light... its actually a pretty fantastic Camera, especially in low light, using the dual Iso setup to its fullest. 2. You have to get your exposure correct in camera - nope, thats actually what braw is for, and you can change it later in the edit if you did not hit it correctly. 3. This cant take photos, technically. Well, especially the 6K shoots incredible looking 21,2 Megapixel DNGs... its also a very good photo camera. Hope you enjoy the cam.

    • @RyanKao
      @RyanKao  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey man, really appreciate the feedback! I’m glad you at least enjoyed the video for a bit. Regarding some of your thoughts; In terms of low light, you are right. It’s certainly decent. The dual native ISO does give you good flexibility, however it’s no “fool proof” low light capability that many mirrorless cameras have which many of us are used to shooting on. I’m referring to 6400-12800+. Exposure with this camera is also more tedious as locking down you ISO ranges and best understanding how the camera handles in terms of highlight and shadow detail recovery for the given lighting situation is important. The camera has fairly significant changes in dynamic range, color and noise patterns throughout the ISO ranges. Nailing your lighting in camera, keeping in mind your contrast ratios, all plays a huge role in getting good images out of the camera. And lastly with still, yes. You can take basic stills with the sensor, however it lacks many “stills” capabilities that modern photo cameras have, with regards to autofocus, drive modes, flash sync, shutter speed ranges, etc. So I didn’t mean to say it CANT be a still camera, but it’s certainly not intended for it!

    Cool rig. Do you ever switch lenses on a shoot, though? It must be a pain to quickly switch lenses on that rig. So I guess you're pretty much limited to a zoom lens like your Sigma.

  • @8lec_R

    This is a great (also p4k) camera to start with and rig it put slowly. It can grow along with you
    I still don't even have half of the required funds to buy a p4k... Someday baby someday

      I can build it up in probably 5 minutes or so if I’m unpacking on location! I love it. And honestly the a7siii is just a totally different use case for me. Both amazing in terms of image. I’ll do a comparison soon

    what do you think, now in 2023.. I got there 4/3 micro lenes from my Gh 3.. shall I sell the 4/3 micro stuff and save up to a 6k pro or should I fly sell my gh3 house and save my 4/3 micro lenses and get a p K4 and work with it for two to three years?... what do you suggest now in 2023? I also heard reputation that a new full format L mount pocket camera might be coming out.. but , now is now.. what do you think is best to start up, learning on your own, doing street documentary work, acting yourself in front of the camera and learn light, sound and resolve during the coming year? what way to best go to get started? thanks

    Nice build Ryan!! I recently picked up the BMPCC 6K. I edit in Premier and downloaded the plugin for BRAW. I experimented with some BRAW 6K shots and they looked very grainy compared to the pro res 4K. Does editing BRAW in Resolve make a difference compared to Premier?

    • @ykchew4793
      @ykchew4793 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Raw footages are generally grainier than compressed codec like prores. Editing in Resolve or Premiere would mostly differ in its workflow, not so much on quality. But definitely it is much easier to edit BRAW in Resolve

    Good video. I kind of respectfully disagree. The 6k does not give you enough 4k options. As you have stated - you have to rig it out. No IBIS. and the BIG ONE - A7S III actually has autofocus that is usable. I love the way that the BM Raw footage looks but I am really not sure it is worth all the extra effort. Also, BM RAw is not optimal for FCPX.
