  • With a history that dates to the 1840s, the Merrimac Ferry remains among the most popular destinations in the state of Wisconsin. Part state highway (WIS 113) and part tourist attraction, Wisconsin’s only free ferry transports around 300,000 vehicles and one million people each year across a half-mile stretch of the Wisconsin River between Sauk and Columbia counties. Who owns and operates the ferry? What should travelers keep in mind when coming aboard? These questions and more are answered in a new video produced by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation in cooperation with the Columbia County Highway Department.
