PILES of Agates! Rock Hunting Island Agates with Theo Kellison

- Kate and Jim take Theo Kellison rockhounding on the Yellowstone River, searching for Montana agates, jasper and petrified wood. The sun is shining, the finds are plentiful, and the fun is real! Jim finds the first petrified wood and agate of the day (always a badge of honor!), and Kate finds plenty of chunky, agate-y goodness, along with some jasper that is just spectacular. One of the highlights of the trip is Kate's discovery of a VERY strange piece of what might be petrified wood, but might be some other fossil entirely. Do YOU know what it is?

Glad you enjoyed it! :)
Rocks are forever interesting. Yellowstone is on my bucket list. Can't wait.
You all have such a silly fun time! Thanks for taking us along!
:D It was so ridiculous! Thanks for coming along. :)
REALLY Nice Treasure Trove for everybody! What fun!
Thanks, Janette!
I just fished watching theos channel. The three of you and kava have gotton all the agates and petrified wood on the river. Keep having fun!
Ha, nobody gets all the agates!
I watched both videos. They were great. We loved when you said, "This is what I've been looking for all day." I'm sure there were thousands of us singing chunky, chunky, chunky!!!
Ha, you are right!
Awesome Birthday video Kate, Jim and Theo.... I enjoy seeing you all together
Thanks, Rebecca - it was a good day!
Wow, lots of swirls and water lines in these rocks. Just beautiful. That purple jasper, wohoo!
Right?! Thanks for joining us. :)
Awesome trip! Always a good trip out with friends! Great finds...happy birthday theo!
Glad you enjoyed it. :)
Rockhounds are the best people 😂
Mostly, yes!
Would visit the Yellowstone River if I could talk my daughter and son in law. They are rock lovers but his job doesn't allow away time anymore. But maybe once he retires. Love your channel and all the greatfinds.
Someday! :)
That 2nd or 3rd rock: never seen SO MANY waterlines in one place!
Right? It was remarkable!
Someday we'll go to the Yellowstone River and hunt for rocks! (Not before we get Kate's book ;- !)
Awwwww!
That large piece of petrified wood looks like a fossil, such as a alligator. Have someone at the college look at it before cutting.
It really does look like a fossil!
You guts are hilarious! Wish I had some of those rocks! Those agate are sure pretty out there. California doesn't have too many on the coast. ROCK ON!! 😁👍🏻🪨⛏️
Thanks 👍
Botryoidal is my favorite for sure all is beautiful
:) Love me some bots!
So fun to see guys out having a good time together.
It was really great!
Yay Theo!
:D
Theo is built like a giraffe so he needs to run. Looks like fun happy hounding.
LOL, you're not wrong!
I really like how you explain what the various rocks are and how they were formed.
Thanks - I think it's fascinating!
Wow, so many beautiful finds. It seems that MT is giving up some beautiful agates this year. ❤😊❤
Yep - so many beautiful rocks.
You guys are a riot! Lol! I laughed so hard! And a Happy Belated Birthday to you, Theo Kellison!
You all just found some amazing rocks! And that big piece of pet wood that you found is teredo wood!.It just doesn't have as many worm holes as ours does. And I didn't know that you guys had ship worms in fresh water rivers, but holy cow if that wasn't gorgeous.the holes are caused by ship worms that burrow into the wood and then the worms die and the holes get filled in with silt and silica. And it petrified as it was and it does polish well at least the Oregon teredo wood does! It's a huge, gorgeous piece of teredo wood! And the agates and jaspers were amazing, but my favorites by far, are those gorgeous stromatolites you found! And I really hope you kept those because I will buy them from you! I'm a collector of stromatolites and I have quite a few. Mine are all from the Nevada desert from when it was an ancient shallow sea! And I would love to buy those if you are willing to part with them! Through your Etsy store or personally. Tell me how much! You know how to get a hold of me. I have bought many things from you at your auctions and from your store. It was an awesome video. Thanks Kate!
Hi, Lisa. :) I will put together a stromatalite package for you and get ahold of you!
@@KatyDidRocks OMG! Are you serious? That is so awesome of you! I would love that! Thank you Kate!
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You're welcome!
Thank you ❤😊🎉
You're welcome 😊
Nice hunt. Loved the brecciated jasper. I had some questions for you.
1) I haven't seen any Montana Agates on your website lately. Are you still carrying them?
2) You've had your Covington 10' trim saw for a while now. How do you like it now?
3) Any possibility of seeing Jim, using his faceting machine?
Thanks,
Aku suka batu akik 👍👍,,,,, salam dari Indonesia,,,
What a great day! You found some great stuff
Thanks! We all enjoyed it.
Happy Birthday Theo.
:)
Getting out to Montana to out hunt the Yellowstone River is on my bucket list. Hopefully, in the near future.
Someday! It's worth it. :)
Amazing so many beautiful finds thanks for sharing 😊
Thank you so much 😊
Beautiful bands on that one
They are!
18:37 cannot wait to see what is inside.
It's really interesting! I'm a little scared to cut it, because I've been disappointed before - but it does look promising.
A great one Katy!
Thank you! 😃
Just watched Theo's video. Poor Kava, hopefully she's not freaked out about boating. Love group rock hunts. That stromatolite may be a stromataporoid. Lovely pet wood finds. ❤
She's fine - luckily, she's a dog! She still loves the boat, and the beach is just a part of it.
I watched Theo's version of this day (his birthday) and with what you guys found. This was a great day!
It was a delight!
Wow I don't remember you finding so many cool rocks in a long time great job. I hope you cut up some of them and polish them.
Thanks, Ray. It was a good hunt - nice to be back on the river again.
That long piece looks like some sort of orbicular jasper.
Nice finds
Thanks!
Oh my goodness! Such a plethora of goodies.
I can't even get outside (107) much less go rock hunting. My river was nearly dry last week but we got some rain. I would love to go hunting for fossils, artifacts, and rocks. Alas, knees and heat are my bane.
I am truly envious, but in a friendly way, of your adventures. Carry on.
I am happy my videos can give you a break from the heat! Thanks for joining us. :)
Just excellent! That Jasper was rarely beautiful. I’m glad you pick up weird rocks!
I looked up Eddie White, but he was booked! I’ll have to try sooner. I love your excellent book. I do think a boat is the way to go….I imagine the parks get picked over….but, of course, not everyone recreating is looking for rocks. Thanks!
See you soon, Christi!
amazing video
Glad you think so!
Congratulations on the 16k subs 🥳🎉🍻
Thank you so much 😀
It almost reminds me of Teredo wood that we find on the central Oregon coast. It happens to be the state fossil for North Dakota (even though it’s now land locked).
My dream is to hound Montana. If you ever come to Central Oregon, or the coast we have lots of spots. Not such large finds like there, but still fun.
The consensus is teredo wood. I've never found any - cool!
I believe that large one you said was petrified wood is a fossilized bone of some sort maybe a skull? I’d do some research on it for sure! Great finds! 😎👍
There seems to be a consensus that it is some kind of worm wood... but it's cool, for sure!
Nice! I want to see so many of those cut but especially that large weird chunk of pet wood. Will you do a video of that?
I'm sure going to try! The consensus seems to be that it's teredo wood, with the spots made by worms. It would be cool to see if it goes all the way through.
That Petrified Wood looks like it has marine worm holes. Alot like the Peanut Wood in Australia.
I think you're right!
Looks like palm when there are circles
This river seems almost dry! Is it just a usual fact due to the season of sparkling, or another fact of a phenomenon due to the climatic changes that our planet undergoes?
No, it’s pretty normal for this time of year - the river rises and falls a great deal annually.
I guess I have missed old videos. I always see you picking up agates. What do you do with all those agates you collect? I have seen some being cut. Do you tumble them and do you show them when they are done?
Hi! I do tumble some, and make cabochons out of others - but mostly I either keep them to look at, or sell them on my Etsy store as part of a mystery box. If you want to catch up on old videos, there is a "Binge Watch KatyDid" link on my channel page. Thanks for watching!
Jim: which pull cart for your pail did you get?
Jim's cart was made by Broll, which is currently out of business . :( I'm working with someone to see if we can get it back into production.
@@KatyDidRocks if not, I will look for substitutes!
What a great outing. I'm glad I watched both amazing videos. Congratulations on you amazing finds. I look forward to seeing what you will do with them.
Thank you!
Hi there! We are rockhounds from Wisconsin. Heading west next summer. Picking Yellowstone River is on my bucket list. Could you please recommend a public area to access? Thank you. I really enjoyed your video!
Hello, Marian! Montana FWP has a downloadable guide to the fishing accesses of the lower Yellowstone that gives an overview of the public accesses. issuu.com/montanaoutdoors/docs/lower_yellowstone_guide_web I also have written a book about rockhounding on all the fishing accesses and bridges from Huntley to Sidney that you might enjoy over the winter: www.etsy.com/listing/1089523180/so-many-beautiful-rocks-a-memoir-and
Happy hounding!
@@KatyDidRocks Thank you sooo much! Happy hunting!
How can I send you a photo so you can possibly help me identify something I found and cut I’m not exactly sure what it is
Hello! If you have Facebook, your best option is to join the group “Look What I Found” and post the photos there. I’m an admin for the group, as is Theo Kellison - and there are many knowledgeable folks there.
I’ve watched so many videos of people finding agates in the wild but I still haven’t found a video (or other resource) that explains how to spot nodules if bands or lines aren’t visible. Do you have a video that can help?
Hi! I try to explain a little about what I'm looking for in each video, but here's a quick primer: There are several things that indicate Montana agate. They tend to have a rough, elephant hide type skin texture, lumps and bumps (and sometimes dimples), and if they are clean and the sun is shining, they glow. Once you train your eye to see them, they are very different from the rocks around them. Of course, this only applies to Montana agates -
@@KatyDidRocks thank you. I guess I’ll just have to come and hang out with you in Montana! 😁
The large petrified wood, maybe it was burnt?
Maybe!
It's a half burnt log that petrified ....
Cool, right? :)
👍
:)
You are cheerful. Love ❤️
The Yellowstone River makes it easy. :)
🎉🎉🎉🎉👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽🙏🙏🙏🙏🌹🌹🌹🌹
:)
Where is this at I am currently in Bismark ND
Hello! We were out on the river between Forsyth and Hysham - but the Yellowstone runs all the way to Sidney and has great agates up that direction.
What do you do with your rocks?
Hmmm. It depends. Sometimes I cut and polish, sometimes I go farther and make cabochons, sometimes I sell them, and sometimes I just sit and look at them. :D
Is there any of those in Arizona?
There are lots of awesome rocks in Arizona! Colored petrified wood comes to mind.
Where are you hunting?
West of Forsyth. :)
Only aloud 250lbs a year,
This is true if you are collecting on BLM lands. The river is a different story. Thanks for the reminder!
Where is the rock on the thumbnail ? 🤨
16:48
@@KatyDidRocks Clickbait, it's a completely different colour in the thumbnail 🙄
Please dont cut that huge one before getting it checked for fossils, one side really does look like an alligators jaw with teeth and scales
It does - but the general thought is that it's petrified wood with worm holes.
Am I the only one who wants the agate at 16:28?
Hey there! I didn't see an agate at that time stamp, but the stromatalite was DOPE!
