This entire film was filmed on the island of Kauai over a 9 day period. The first 3 days were spent hiking the Napali coast, a 11 mile hike along the coast. We did this for 3 days. After this we spent 2 more days exploring the island. I did this with 8 other friends. After the 5 days were up with them, they all flew back to Oahu where everyone was living, and I stayed on the island on my own for 4 more days.
I had a rental truck, that's how I got around. I didn't want to spend money on hotels though, so I slept in the truck, in a Walmart parking lot for the other 4 nights. A lot of cars get broken in on the island of Kauai, according to rumors, so that's why I would camp in the parking lots, so I was a lot more exposed if someone tried to break in where I was sleeping :) That way i wouldn't get robbed, raped, or murdered, ha.
At night when I got done filming, I would go into the only Walmart on the island, where they also have a McDonald's, and I would bum off there wi-fi with my ipod touch, and plot my path for the next day, then I would head out before the break of dawn every morning, and I would get back after sunset to do it all over again.
On a technical side, this was all all shot on the Canon 5D Mark II. Most of the shots were done with the Canon 16-35mm 2.8 L Series lens.
The smooth shots were done with a Glidecam HD-4000. You can check out the exact model on their official website here where you can also buy them. I've been shooting with there glidecams for the last 5 years, and love them. They do take a little bit of a learning curve, but once you get past that, it's all smooth!

Also, here's a link to some of the photography I did as well while I was filming. I did this just on the side, just because I was already at the location, but my main focus was capturing it on video. Second was photographing it.

Almost every shot (every shot without people in it, for sure) looks like it could be from a major Hollywood studio motion picture. In my book it's the highest praise a cinematographer can ever get. Amazing job, Sir, simply stunning.
I went to Kauai and seeing pictures that I have seen in my own eyes was amazing. That trip was the best time of my life. I do t think il ever experience something better.

Having viewed this before and after my first trip to Kauai, I can say I've never seen a video that so perfectly captures a place, and especially the majestic and heavenly playground that is Kauai. Thank you for making it!

Devin, in my cinematic opinion, this epic work of four minutes and forty-seven seconds, did not merely put you on the map--but established you as superior film-maker. The music is suitably married to the motion and flow of the movie and story. This is how it should be executed, how Hawaii should be told to the world. You have raised the bar very high and are at your own level. You have the chops, but more importantly--the superb taste and discernment to put things in a particular order that keeps viewers coming back for more.
It's breath-taking, right?

I lived there 3 months... yes, it is THAT beautiful. Honestly I can't imagine any place on earth being more beautiful..... in fact, its considered one of the most beautiful places on Earth.

I'm from Kaua'i. I can't speak for everyone from here, but this video has opened my eyes. Sometimes you just get so caught up in life and that you miss out on all the beauty that surrounds you everyday

We borrowed this camera and a glidecam in order to film a project, but it looked like we did everything with a potato. XD I guess it really depends on the person who is filming and editing. Respect!

I was there in 96 for 11 days and in 2014 for 42 days..didn't want to leave either time.
Napali Coast is breathtaking by helicopter and boat..did both.
Will get back there one day..and stay this time.

I am proud to call this place my home! all my life i was raised on such a magnificent island, with such wonderful people. I never realize how beautiful my home was, until i left for college :(. i cant wait to return to my home, and appreciate each day as a blessing! as they say, "You can take the boy from the island, but not the island from the boy."

It’s 2024 and this generation may never know how REVOLUTIONARY this video was just 13 years ago. I remember watching it then and thinking how on earth is he getting the camera to move so smoothly?? The glidecam gave way to ronin and now everybody has a stabilizer but I hope people know just how original this video was in 2011, and still it’s inspiring me and causing me to wonder at the beauty of Kauai.
