If you have a bigger piece of board it'll be harder. The easiest way is to double the lower denominator and that will give you half. For instance 4 5/16, you take 16 x 2 and you get 32 and half of 4 is 2, so the answer is 2 5/32. This method is easier and you will know The exact center.
Extra tip it works the same way if you want to add odd numbers together. 5/16, you take and take half of 16 and you get 8, which makes the answer 5/8. There are different ways to come up with the same answer. If you want to get the 16th of 5/16 doubled you just double the numerator...5/16 , doubles = 10/16...and so on

I've been a carpenter for years. This seems like a good trick if it works consistently. I just double the denominator on my fraction, then add that to my halved whole number. For example for the center of 3 1/2, double the two (2) which would be 1/4, add that to 1 1/2 (half of three) 1 1/2 plus a 1/4 is 1 3/4. Any fraction if you double the denominator is automatically half. Hope this helps someone.

Yeah sure you can double the denominator like we have been doing forever, Easy AF, but try explaining that on site to The greenhorn millennial in under a half hour. This method shows rather than tells how it’s done & can make the mathematically inept laborer look somewhat competent, at least for a moment.

Divide 4by2, 1/4 by 2, add a 32nd in your head and you'll get the answer in about half a second and you'll have it to repeat on the next part but also this is very interesting might pull it out on someone and blow their mind

Actually the whole quote is “a jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one.” It used to be a compliment.
