I highly recommend the Pride of Broken Arrow’s 2021 BOA Grand National Finals performance “The Edge of Eternity”. They broke the Grand Nationals record for highest score (the previous record was held by Avon H.S. with 97.75, but Broken Arrow beat it on Saturday, Nov. 13th, with 98.25 and went on to become the Grand National Champions!)

So glad you enjoyed this show. All 3 of my daughters were in The Pride of Broken Arrow. My youngest, Victoria, was a Senior that year. She is the young lady on keyboards in the opening shot. The kids start learning the music in May, slowly practicing and memorizing through the summer. Then, at the end of July, they start learning the marching drills, putting the music and movement together a little at a time until the whole show is performed at Grand Nationals in November. If you like this show, check out Broken Arrow’s show from 2011, Destiny Leaves You No Choice, which won the BOA Grand Nationals Champion. Victoria was in that show along with her sister, Maria, a trumpet player, who now lives in London. Also check out Aqua, 2006 show that also won Grand Nat’s. My oldest, Kateri was in that one. Btw, my wife helped sew, and I helped cut out the giant “dresses” including the huge one seen at the end of “Surrender to Hope”. It weighed over 300 pounds.

@@brendanlynch4628 It becomes a large part of your life. Being a Pride kid is being part of an identifiable group around campus that is just part of the fabric, like the athletes. People talk about Pride kids as a group, there are generalizations, people around town will sometimes say something if you have your pride coat on, etc.

I was in marching band in high school and am from Oklahoma. While my small rural school isn’t in the same competition class as Broken Arrow, we did often attend the same competitions. As they’re in a higher class they performed later than us, so my other band mates and I often made sure to hurry back to the buses, change out of uniforms, put up our instruments, and get back to watch Broken Arrow! If you enjoy watching their field marching, you should try to find a video of them marching in a parade. They don’t just boringly march in straight lines down the roads, they put on a performance then, too! I last saw them perform in 2019 at a competition. My niece was in high school marching band and was performing. When I saw their name on the list of bands performing, I told my sister we were definitely staying until the end (they were to be the last band to perform that day). It was definitely worth the wait! Though many other Oklahoma high school marching bands also put really great shows, too!

Same here! We played in the same class as Broken Arrow but even then there were only about 4-5 bands that could even come close to their level (Tulsa Union, Owasso, etc...).

College Marching bands' sole purpose is to get a pop out of the crowd at a football game. BOA and Drum Corps values the artistic value much more. Bands are scored on musical ability, complexity and togetherness of the marching/formations, and the overall impact of the storytelling and presentation of the show. College bands come up with a new show every week, whereas BOA/Drum Corps shows are done for the entire season. The band I was in in High School got 7th at the state level, and we practiced most days between June and early November. Better bands I'm sure do even more than that.

This was my brother’s first year as a BA Pride band member! He’s the one kneeling at 4:37 in this video close to the 35 yard line playing the sax. They are all amazing performers and took a lot of work to get there. Being apart of this program, everyone put in many hours to create this show. It’s a full time job for them. So glad to see someone enjoying it! You should do a video on their 2015 show “ Wild Blue Orchid”.

hey, i'm a euphonium player from bixby, oklahoma!
we're right down the road and are on the come up. we're moving into the same division as BA next year, as a matter of fact. if you're interested, i'd recommend our 2018 show, Heresy(which i wasn't in); our 2019 show, Hadesland(freshman year, i played baritone); and our 2021 show, Beyond. they're not as well done as BA's, but i think you'd still get a kick out of them.
for some solid drum corps action, i would recommend the Madison Scouts' 1988 show, the Bluecoats' 2014 show, and the Cavaliers' 2000-2003 shows. it's awesome that you're interested in US marching athletics! it's a lot of fun to be a part of it, and i always love seeing people outside the US's reactions to marching band!
    much love, brother!

As someone who's last year in the color guard was this show, let me tell ypu when we got off of the field from the finals we all cried because we all gave it EVERYTHING and we knew we left it all out on that field. As an aside, we were intentionally taking the fabric off during parts of the show as we had a limited time to get all of our equipment off the field or we'd get points deducted, so that helped with us with making sure that we met that requirement while also adding to the story and visuals. I wish the camera could have shown more of the dancing and routine we were doing with the flags too, but every one of us put our hearts and souls into that craft.

I was in marching band all throughout high school. It is HARD ASS WORK! We rehearsed before and after school and, of course, at band camp. NO way could my body do that today! I graduated in 1987 and to this day I have nightmares of missing rehearsals and not knowing the routine! I played the flute/piccolo so it's refreshing to see such an extensive flute solo and done so well. In my day solos were more for brass instruments or percussion.

BOA is Bands of America, which is a national marching band competition for high schools all around the USA. There are competitions in each region and bands must pay an entry fee to participate.
Marching Band is very intense and competitive in the US, but more so in vertain regions. Here in Texas, it's as big as high school football. In the San Antonio area, there are two of the largest school districts in the nation along with several smaller ones. Some smaller schools have up to 100 band members, while others have over 330 (some don't even march their Freshmen).
My wife and I were Band Boosters for 12 years as all three of our kids were in the marching band. There is much more that goes into marching band than people realize.
If you want to see the best of the best, there are plenty videos of Drum Corpse International (DCI) competitions. DCI is the professional level for marching band members and they consist of high school and college students. They go on tour all across the US and compete in several contests. Their season culminates in a massive championship in Indiana. The Blue Devils are the absolute favorite of most fans as they have more championships than any ither corpse and still hold the record for the highest score ever awarded by the judges. Other favorites are The Blue Coats, The Caveliers, The Phantom Regiment, The Cadets, Santa Clara Vanguard, Carolina Crown, and others.

I actually performed in this band, but my first year was in 2014. My brother was in this show, and there are actually three fun facts about this show. The first fun fact is that each one of those black dresses weighed 100+ pounds because of their size. The second fun fact is that they were the raining Champs from the season before, and they were supposed to take first place this season, but the color guard judge dropped several points because of a grudge he had against our color guard director which caused them the National title. The third fun fact is that despite what happened, the band was extremely happy for the other band that ended up winning the title because it had been several years since they won.

Question for ya Bees: I feel like in the beginning you (naturally) focused mainly on sports, US in global politics and general cultural differences. Recently, you've gotten into common things like a capella and marching bands and I never really thought about them being American things, but I am finding out they are! Are these new revelations changing your thoughts on what everyday life is like here in the USA? Also- how long do you think before they start popping up in the UK haha

I don't know if you realize that all of the performers here are in high school and range in age from 13 up to 19. This is phenomenal for a group this young to pull off this style of performance. If you would like to see examples of next level, check out DCI videos. My personal favorite is Phantom Regiment - "Sparticus". Here's the link: th-cam.com/video/bmH2O1JFPfM/w-d-xo.html
Disclaimer: I had the honor of marching with the Phantom Regiment way back in 1973 and still live in Rockford, IL where they are based. So yes, I'm a little biased, but you can't go wrong with any Phantom Regiment performance or any other performance by the many drum corps that are part of DCI (Drum Corp International).

You should check out the DCI (Drum Corps International) corps. They take this to an even greater level. Bluecoats, Cavaliers, Phantom Regiment. Santa Clara Vanguard, Carolina Crown, to name a few. The Corp members range from young teens and age out at 21. Incredible talent and pageantry.

This is a pretty big rabbit hole to fall down. There are hundreds of BOA and DCI videos available to watch and all can be so amazing. Look up Phantom Regiment, Blue Devils, Carolina Crown, Santa Clara Vanguard, Blue Coats, Cadets, Madison Scouts, Cavaliers. One of my favorites is 2014's E=mc2.

I always wanted to have the honor of performing at BOA. My school had the quality of show but I'm sure it cost a lot of money. But we did get to travel to other parts of the country and perform other shows. I also got to perform the show that got my school's first ever State Championship. Oh how I miss the days.

Broken Arrow is a suburb of Tulsa Oklahoma. Their high school is large by most standards with over 4300 students.
This performance is following a “Drum & Bugle Corps” style of entertainment which is different from the marching bands you normally see in high schools and colleges. The performance is more artistic with heavy reliance on props and unusual movements among the band members. Winning performances tend to be on the trippy or avant-garde side of things.
In my home state of Kansas, this style of band wasn’t affiliated with specific schools but were private organizations outside of school attachments.
This performance is impressive although I personally prefer a more traditional marching band whether standard (Best example is Ohio State) or military (Texas A&M) styles.

If you watch anything else like this, I'd like to recommend that you avoid anything from the past decade or so, when marching band/drum corps became overrun with electronics and vocals. I might be labeled a boomer for having this opinion if anyone here actually cares enough but oh well ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • @parkerhewett8585
    @parkerhewett8585 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Fun fact: This show was expected to win this year, but one of the music judges had some kind of grudge against one of the directors from Broken Arrow. And they perposly gave them a lower score. They didn't go the following year, because they wouldn't remove the judge, and then in 2014 they came back to Grand Nations. I'm from broken arrow, I've heard this story multiple times but that's the gist of the story.

Something a lot like that happened to hebron 2015. They broke the current high score at nats with a 97.85 in prelims and had the first slots in finals so 30 minute turn around which affected them pretty badly. That’s why boa introduced the hebron rule where your finals placement is loosely based on the semis place
