I think the main theme of child abuse explains the background to Ethan Hawke's character and the reasons why he kidnaps boys and plays the "naughty boy" game. My theory is that "the grabber" was abused by his father when he was a kid, and as an adult he repeats the same scenario with the roles switched so that he feels powerful. For "the grabber" it's a twisted way of dealing with his pain and trauma. I think the devil looking mask is supposed to represent his father, and whenever he's in it he becomes him. That's why when Finney removed his mask he immediately screamed and covered his face, because to him he's no longer hurting Finney (who he views as himslef) as his father, he's doing it as himself, if that makes any sense.
And the mask can also be suggestions towards his shame. The mask is able to hide himself away from the trauma he grew up with and the actions he's committed.
That’s actually a solid theory) And that probably also means that the Grabber is called Johnny, because he called Finney that after he kidnapped him and before he learned his real name.

The reason that Finn never tried to kill the Grabber until the end was because he's always one to run or "take a punch" not throw one. And then when he finally kills the Grabber, it shows that his talk with Robin had finally made him realize that he had to fight and finish it. And the phone is symbolic. His victims have been calling through the Phone and the Grabber could hear it, and he ignored them. So it was narratively important that Finn killed him with the phone.

Not to mention he's a kid and most kids (and most adults for that matter) aren't natural born killers. In real life, deciding to stab someone to death is a pretty big pill to swallow. Especially if you're a kid and thing could go sideways extremely easy. We all like to think that we would be MIke Tyson in such a situation but that's not real life.
I definitely believe Finny & Gwen inherited their gifts from their mother. Thanks to these gifts, Gwen got the clues she needed & lead Finny to his survival. Finny could probably talk to the dead & Gwen has psychic dreams.

I live in Japan and I remember a story about a gang of criminals who were on a kidnapping and murder spree. For whatever reason, one of the kidnappers felt sympathetic towards one of their victims and when left alone with her, he released her after she promised not to tell. Surprise! Surprise! She went straight to the police Eventually, the entire gang, including Mr. Nice Guy, were executed.
Well that was great that he released her but since it was a spree they had more than one victim, so saving one out of many more doesn't make him a hero..plus it's a lesson for everyone, this is what happens when you choose to hang with the wrong group of people...they all go down together!
I absolutely loved this movie but Ethan Hawke as the grabber basically became a horror icon for me especially with all his masks like ugh I love it especially the smiling one. The child actors were really great too. It’s my current my 2nd fav horror movie of the year with A24’s X being my favorite of 2022. I was actually sad when Robin was shown walking towards the grabber cause that told us his fate and literally cried a bit when he talked to Finney on the phone.
I feel like kids who grow up in an abusive environment have to grow up real fast, they have to learn how to survive and sometimes even fend for themselves. They learn to gauge their father's mood, to see how they should act or react. Like how they were trying to stay silent while he was reading the newspaper. They've learned how to endure beatings. Like how the son could take a punch at school but didn't want to punch back because he doesn't want to be violent like his father. Like how the brother tries to be his sister shield when the dad gets out the belt. Etc, etc. Their father isn't emotionally stable, so the siblings have be stable for each other. So, I didn't find the kids acting mature too out of sorts
I watched this movie with my mom and step father and i remember asking, "were yall that reckless as children back in the 70s?" and without skipping a beat they both said "Hell yeah we were..." lmao its wild how different society was back then.
I’ve had this conversation with my parents who were children and teenagers in the 1970s. It was very much a different time. In some ways it was better because children had more freedom and were subsequently less… delicate and sheltered as children are now. However there were negatives to children having so much freedom, such as an increased chance of them being taken advantage of by evil people. Pluses and minuses.

Definitely true! And it's even wilder in the '50s/'60s (when some of my family members grew up)! I have family members that could recount when reintegration to schools was going on and what it was like going through college when the Counter-Culture/hippie movements were huge.
The 'naughty boys' all helped and built on each other that allowed him to break free. It takes a community. Sometimes we should listen to the voices. =)
I think besides plot, using the phone packed with dirt makes sense. Finn's a kid, who has an aversion to violence to begin with. The rocket ship is small, and to be precise in order to use it as a weapon. Remember, even though Finn was able to f..k The Grabber up, he wasn't able to get him to let go. With the rocket, nothing short of going for the eyes would work, and that means getting in too close, and somehow aiming for a small target that is made even harder to get to by a mask. As for the toilet cover, too heavy due to Finn's size to make an effective weapon. The phone is light enough for Finn to actually use it effectively, and packing dirt into it means he can do some damage.
This movie was one of the most "Welcome to the '70s" kind of movie, oof! Also kinda liked that Gwen's dream visions sometimes included background info about some of the murder victims - it humanized them a bit further beyond just being ghosts that help Finn via Coraline style and showed what they were like in life before their abduction.

Best way I can describe it would be pre-2000's (and probably even during some of the 2000's), spankings weren't considered abuse yet so there's been generations where most parents laid their hands on their kids... 0_0
Here's one very cool, specific detail they did with this movie - Finney's dad works at Rocky Flats. People who grew up in Colorado know what that means (and the director grew up in Westminster, CO), but I wanna share if others don't. Rocky Flats was a weapons-grade plutonium plant from 1952 to 1992, when it was shut down over the ridiculous amounts of safety violations. Like, criminal investigations and prosecutions by the EPA, FBI and DOJ. It leaked plutonium and cancer-causing chemicals into the air and groundwater, all the way into surrounding towns. For decades. In the plant, they had rooms of plutonium barrels that were leaking so bad that the concrete floor was spongey. It became a Superfund Site after they shut it down, with billions spent over 15 years to clean it up. There's a huge zone around where the plant used to be (that part's off limits) that's a wildlife refuge now. So, it adds a layer to the ominous feel of the movie. It wasn't just the alcoholic drinking that made his dad toxic. He was _literally_ toxic. And the implication is that he's not living too long after the movie ends. It also gives a nod to the radioactive superpower trope, with four of its characters having psychic abilities.

My mom and I had a movie night for my birthday this past week and checked this out, because we both love Ethan Hawke. We both absolutely loved it. Very unique movie.

I think people are too hard on Finn for not killing the grabber as soon as he could. He’s what, 13? And you expect him to commit murder when he has another option that is plausible. I’m roughly his age. I know I couldn’t do that if it wasn’t my last possible option. He’s over stressed, traumatized, starving, dehydrated, panicking. And you expect him to be actually ration more than he is? He’s a fucking child.

You do not know what you would do in a situation till youre in it or a similar situation. We all like to think we'd be the one to stop the shooter or something. But most wouldn't. When it panned down to show he was in the basement of the house, I also was like “that’s a really bad transition. It makes it seem like he’s in the coke dudes house.”
One thing to know is those old phone heads were pretty hefty as is, packed dirt inside it could easily turn it into a make-shift mini hammer, which is a lot less unwieldy in a fight than the very choreographed attacks of a big old toilet tank lid. (And a lot easier to wield for a child + the grabber would have a very easy time grabbing the toilet tank away from him or shattering it with his axe)
I’ve seen a lot of negative reviews for this movie but I personally really enjoyed it, it’s eerie, unsettling, has a nice amount of suspense I think the cast did a great job especially Ethan Hawk and the actress who plays Gwen one of my fav horror movies of 2022.
I mean I'll say this much for the dad as a person who knows a lot of people who grew up and raised kids back then. During like the late 70s it was a much different time with how people saw things. When he's angry about cops coming to work that's because it w very much grounds to be fired back then. People knew everybody in communities like that and it was always a hell hole to get talked about. When the cops come to your job there wasn't as much distrust back then so they considered you very seriously and when your boss hears you're getting asked about a bunch of missing kids that's is not a good look. On top of that hearing that your kid is like your late wife and hearing things it's very concerning. Back then parenting was far harsher and mental health talks were nonexistant and the conditions for those with those issues were just awful. We knew nothing of what we know now about schizophrenia or social stigma and parents had no tools for children who had those conditions. They treated mental issues very much like any other behavior and , very sad to say, hitting your kid was the only way a lot of parents had to hopefully get ingrained behaviors out. There wasn't talking like we do now and if they had them it wasn't a conversation to have. I understand the father's point of view here because when tragedy like that happens you do anything to avoid your baby from having the same fate. Because back then when you had issues like that it RAN in your family. I mean you'd have 2 or 3 generations with no idea what was wrong with them and people in the community would still treat you like you were diseased. Trust me it was definitely a relief for a lot of people with generational mental health issues to have the internet. But I will say I'm glad the director had that in this movie and it was very accurate for the time. The kids were written like kids from the time. I know it sounds like an adult but trust me you were expected to be more mature by Finns age back then. 18 wasn't going off to college that was you moved the Fook out and got a job at a local steel mill. Also those fights were tame lol. I swear to God there would be kids packing pocket knives fighting each other's. But that would be the funniest memories. But I do love seeing yours, zavid, chu and I hope Alanda Parker soon. I loved this movie.
My dad says everyone is exaggerating or straight up lying about how bad things were in the 80s and his parents never beat him, even though they were poor. So honestly, I think you're just making excuses for the dad in this movie.

I was definitely a big fan of this movie! Loved the storyline the performances in this movie were absolutely phenomenal!! I cannot say enough great things about this movie. I hear there might be a sequel to this that would definitely be very interesting to see I wonder what they’d base a sequel off of 🤔. Definitely one of the better movies of 2022 in my opinion. Ethan Hawke did a incredible job playing the Grabber. Seeing him play a bad guy was definitely different as he’s never played a bad guy before. Definitely be adding this to my movie collection! Also loved Madeline Mcgraw’s character the sister she was hilarious and she had one of the best lines in the entire damn movie!
Hey Nick! Loved the reaction and (per usual, very!) perceptive commentary, but it's the (humorous) editing getting better and better that makes me just relax and enjoy these! I genuinely burst out laughing when you made that face around 21:15, since that's the way I felt at that point in the film! Also, nice cameo by your cats in the background! I watched the movie the day prior to your and Zzavid's reaction, and I would agree with much what you said. It was an okay horror film, uneven a bit in some ways, although I really liked the children characters and their acting, given it is the debut of their actors apparently. It also does give a lot of _Sinister_ vibes both in design and the way it's made, but granted, it is the same director. The supernatural part was also a bit confusing to me, but maybe that was the point (?). I was thinking of mystery-horror movie with a similar premise, and if you haven't seen it, I really recommend you Sam Raimi's _The Gift_ (2001) with Cate Blanchett and Keanu Reeves (the latter especially reminded me of Finney and Gwen's father, to some degree). Also, read in the comments that you are making _The Burning_ reaction sometime in the future! Looking forward to it!

It is crazy how careless we were as kids back in the 80s-90s. I am grateful we always explored outdoors in large peer groups of at least 8-10 kids. There were multiple reported abduction attempts in our area when we were coming up. You just never know what is REALLY happening right next door. Do not live scared but do be aware of your surroundings at all times.

I’m late to the party but I do have a deep appreciation for this movie. First, we get Sinister vibes from this because it has the same director who also used the same Super 8 film for the visions as he did in Sinister. Then, I love how each ghost helped him little by little as we see every action that he took to escape (the hole he dug, the bars from the window, the rope/ cord he loosened, the code to the padlock, the phone itself, and finally the meat from the freezer) came back into play for the final showdown. Then the ghosts’ last words to the Grabber were also what they said to Fin earlier, just in a different context. There was just so much love in this production and it totally did the book justice! Loved it Nick!
I agree with your suggestion that Fynn had a ceramic toilet lid as a good weapon. But Robin thought the phone would be less conspicuous and easier to hide than a toilet lid if his plans for Fynn were a surprise attack on the grabber.

I was born in 74 and I don't remember my Mom becoming super protective until Adam Walsh's disappearance (1981). I was only 6 months older than him. We stayed out til dark and knew to be home before the sunset although if it was the neighbors then it was as long as we were in shouting distance. Went everywhere barefoot. Constantly outside playing. Love the kitty kitty!

Haha well considering the average movie budget for a Hollywood movie is around 65million, and this movie had a budget o 16-18 million, id consider it a low budget movie. I'm no expert though, and I got all this information from reading random articles online and from The Black Phone Wikipedia page so could be wrong!
My biggest flex is that this movie came out on my 20th bday😂 My town does a trunk or treat every year, and for Halloween in 2022, a boy (maybe 9-10 years old), was dressed as the grabber and my “fan girl ass” asked to take a pic with him and he let me. I still have the pic lol Fin talking to Robin for the last time had me in a puddle of tears. Same when Gwen and Fin reunite at the end of the movie 😭 AND YESSS THE BLACK VAN WAS THERE IN THE DRIVEWAY!! IT LITERALLY PISSES ME OFF TOO CUZ LIKE, certainly there weren’t many black vans in their area. The least the cops could’ve done was check the area that the kidnaps happened in, and they probably would’ve found it. If you’re gonna kidnap and murder kids, at least be smart and park your vehicle in the backyard (totally don’t condone to it, but be smart lmaooo) But yeah, seeing the van right there, especially when the cops (AND GWEN) were right across the street and didn’t see it right away, really pissed me off. But this was a really great movie and I enjoyed it. My adrenaline was sooo high.
James Ransone also was Eddie in "IT: Chapter 2." Forgive me for the spoiler alert: he gets killed by Pennywise. If this actor keeps getting killed in movies, he will go on Twitter or something and beg people to sign a petition to keep him from getting killed in movies like Sean Bean did!
Glad I wasn't the only one freaking out over James Ransone in this, he may've had like 30 secs of screen time but I was paying very close attention for those 30 seconds 😩
@@nicksaysboo17, yeah. I had cataract surgery about 8 months ago and about a week and half ago my retinas detached in both eyes. Had some Oil put in my left eye and some kind of Gas in my right eye. As long as I hold the phone up to my right eye, I can see.
So, growing up in the 80s, in the Southeast, I can say we grew up pretty similar. Kids would be out until dark (9ish during the summer), going off by ourselves on adventures through woods and around navy bases, etc., at 11 per CPS rules you could watch your siblings for multiple hours, and just a whole bunch of stuff that people find crazy now. Obviously, these kids were a bit stupider than most. I just think back then you had to learn how to survive earlier especially depending on where you lived. Being Mixed & Gay in those areas back then was Hell, in that Bible Belt area (SC, NC, & VA is where I moved around).
Max/Deputy So&So is the same guy who played Adult Eddie Kaspbrak in IT Chapter 2. I also really enjoyed him in Generation Kill. Infact thanks to him getting that role he was able to get sober as he waw a heroin addict for many years.

I dont rhink that the father is abusive tbh. Spanking is a normal thing, especially back then in the 70s, tho i dont condone it or recommend it. And he rlly does love them, but everything that happened with the mom messed him up, yk? Also the ghosts weren't actually usless, as all the items they gave Finney, were used in the end to kill the grabber. The hole was used to trap him, the window grate thingy was used to break hos ankle, the cord was used to trip and choke him, the password was obviously used to open the door, the meat was used to distract the dog! :) Also i think that Finney did inherit his mothers physic abilities, just like Gwen because he was able to hear and speak to the ghosts, unlike the others! And i LOVED the part where Bruce says, "FINNS.ARM.IS.MINT!" And finney snaps his neck, i thought that was epic! And it was also coincidental because when the grabber kidnapped Finney he said he should snap his neck and in the end Finn ended up snapping HIS neck! I ABSOLUTELY AM OBSESSED WITH THIS MOVIE!! Great directing! The feel of the movie and how perfectly all the pieces fit together! And the acting is ABSOLUTELY SLAY! I read that this was actually the actor of Finns first movie! And he did AMAZING, especially considering that he mostly had to act on his own without another actor to play off of and considering his age! He's gonna go far in his career! And the actor for Gwen, that scene with the spanking is AMAZING! ESPECIALLY for her AGE!! OBSESSED WITH THIS MOVIE! And i was SO SAD when Robin gor kidnapped, i love how he stood up for finney and taught bullies a lesson. "Don't cry buddy!" LOVE IT. 😃 100000000000000000000/10

I really liked this movie, but the sister psychic abilities were kind of hyped up for not much in the end. Her brother killed the guy and would have been fine anyway. She helped find the corpses in the other house I guess, but they'd have been found eventually.
Watched this movie today and thought it was a decent watch, but I definitely agree on most of your insights. Here are my two thoughts: 1) James Ransone plays Max, "the cute guy," and I absolutely agree! Loved him in both of the Sinister movies and he was also in It: Chapter Two as adult Eddie Kaspbrak. It's a shame James Ransone is a good actor in this and other things I've seen, because I just recently read a Twitter thread about some really weird behavior/fan interactions he's displayed. I think the main theme of child abuse explains the background to Ethan Hawke's character and the reasons why he kidnaps boys and plays the "naughty boy" game. My theory is that "the grabber" was abused by his father when he was a kid, and as an adult he repeats the same scenario with the roles switched so that he feels powerful. For "the grabber" it's a twisted way of dealing with his pain and trauma. I think the devil looking mask is supposed to represent his father, and whenever he's in it he becomes him. That's why when Finney removed his mask he immediately screamed and covered his face, because to him he's no longer hurting Finney (who he views as himslef) as his father, he's doing it as himself, if that makes any sense.
And the mask can also be suggestions towards his shame. The mask is able to hide himself away from the trauma he grew up with and the actions he's committed.
That’s actually a solid theory) And that probably also means that the Grabber is called Johnny, because he called Finney that after he kidnapped him and before he learned his real name.

The reason that Finn never tried to kill the Grabber until the end was because he's always one to run or "take a punch" not throw one. And then when he finally kills the Grabber, it shows that his talk with Robin had finally made him realize that he had to fight and finish it. And the phone is symbolic. His victims have been calling through the Phone and the Grabber could hear it, and he ignored them. So it was narratively important that Finn killed him with the phone.
YES! YES! THIS! everyone gets upset that he doesn’t go for the kill as soon as he can but this is WHY!

Not to mention he's a kid and most kids (and most adults for that matter) aren't natural born killers. In real life, deciding to stab someone to death is a pretty big pill to swallow. Especially if you're a kid and thing could go sideways extremely easy. We all like to think that we would be MIke Tyson in such a situation but that's not real life.

I definitely believe Finny & Gwen inherited their gifts from their mother. Thanks to these gifts, Gwen got the clues she needed & lead Finny to his survival. Finny could probably talk to the dead & Gwen has psychic dreams.

I live in Japan and I remember a story about a gang of criminals who were on a kidnapping and murder spree. For whatever reason, one of the kidnappers felt sympathetic towards one of their victims and when left alone with her, he released her after she promised not to tell. Surprise! Surprise! She went straight to the police Eventually, the entire gang, including Mr. Nice Guy, were executed.

Well that was great that he released her but since it was a spree they had more than one victim, so saving one out of many more doesn't make him a hero..plus it's a lesson for everyone, this is what happens when you choose to hang with the wrong group of people...they all go down together!

I absolutely loved this movie but Ethan Hawke as the grabber basically became a horror icon for me especially with all his masks like ugh I love it especially the smiling one. The child actors were really great too. It’s my current my 2nd fav horror movie of the year with A24’s X being my favorite of 2022. I was actually sad when Robin was shown walking towards the grabber cause that told us his fate and literally cried a bit when he talked to Finney on the phone.
I feel like kids who grow up in an abusive environment have to grow up real fast, they have to learn how to survive and sometimes even fend for themselves. They learn to gauge their father's mood, to see how they should act or react. Like how they were trying to stay silent while he was reading the newspaper. They've learned how to endure beatings. Like how the son could take a punch at school but didn't want to punch back because he doesn't want to be violent like his father. Like how the brother tries to be his sister shield when the dad gets out the belt. Etc, etc. Their father isn't emotionally stable, so the siblings have be stable for each other. So, I didn't find the kids acting mature too out of sorts
I watched this movie with my mom and step father and i remember asking, "were yall that reckless as children back in the 70s?" and without skipping a beat they both said "Hell yeah we were..." lmao its wild how different society was back then.

I’ve had this conversation with my parents who were children and teenagers in the 1970s. It was very much a different time. In some ways it was better because children had more freedom and were subsequently less… delicate and sheltered as children are now.
However there were negatives to children having so much freedom, such as an increased chance of them being taken advantage of by evil people. Pluses and minuses.

Definitely true! And it's even wilder in the '50s/'60s (when some of my family members grew up)! I have family members that could recount when reintegration to schools was going on and what it was like going through college when the Counter-Culture/hippie movements were huge.
The 'naughty boys' all helped and built on each other that allowed him to break free. It takes a community. Sometimes we should listen to the voices. =)
I think besides plot, using the phone packed with dirt makes sense. Finn's a kid, who has an aversion to violence to begin with. The rocket ship is small, and to be precise in order to use it as a weapon. Remember, even though Finn was able to f..k The Grabber up, he wasn't able to get him to let go. With the rocket, nothing short of going for the eyes would work, and that means getting in too close, and somehow aiming for a small target that is made even harder to get to by a mask. As for the toilet cover, too heavy due to Finn's size to make an effective weapon. The phone is light enough for Finn to actually use it effectively, and packing dirt into it means he can do some damage.
This movie was one of the most "Welcome to the '70s" kind of movie, oof!
Also kinda liked that Gwen's dream visions sometimes included background info about some of the murder victims - it humanized them a bit further beyond just being ghosts that help Finn via Coraline style and showed what they were like in life before their abduction.

Unfortunately and sadly, abuse and beatings aren't time period specific. Best way I can describe it would be pre-2000's (and probably even during some of the 2000's), spankings weren't considered abuse yet so there's been generations where most parents laid their hands on their kids... 0_0
Here's one very cool, specific detail they did with this movie - Finney's dad works at Rocky Flats. People who grew up in Colorado know what that means (and the director grew up in Westminster, CO), but I wanna share if others don't.
Rocky Flats was a weapons-grade plutonium plant from 1952 to 1992, when it was shut down over the ridiculous amounts of safety violations. Like, criminal investigations and prosecutions by the EPA, FBI and DOJ. It leaked plutonium and cancer-causing chemicals into the air and groundwater, all the way into surrounding towns. For decades. In the plant, they had rooms of plutonium barrels that were leaking so bad that the concrete floor was spongey.
It became a Superfund Site after they shut it down, with billions spent over 15 years to clean it up. There's a huge zone around where the plant used to be (that part's off limits) that's a wildlife refuge now.
So, it adds a layer to the ominous feel of the movie. It wasn't just the alcoholic drinking that made his dad toxic. He was _literally_ toxic. And the implication is that he's not living too long after the movie ends. It also gives a nod to the radioactive superpower trope, with four of its characters having psychic abilities.
Oh my gosh, I had no idea about any of this! Thank you so much for sharing, this is fascinating!

I think people are too hard on Finn for not killing the grabber as soon as he could. He’s what, 13? And you expect him to commit murder when he has another option that is plausible. I’m roughly his age. I know I couldn’t do that if it wasn’t my last possible option. He’s over stressed, traumatized, starving, dehydrated, panicking. And you expect him to be actually ration more than he is? He’s a fucking child.
He's a "movie" child, not a real one. He doesn't even speak as a child. In these types of movies, we judge them as adults.

One thing to know is those old phone heads were pretty hefty as is, packed dirt inside it could easily turn it into a make-shift mini hammer, which is a lot less unwieldy in a fight than the very choreographed attacks of a big old toilet tank lid.
(And a lot easier to wield for a child + the grabber would have a very easy time grabbing the toilet tank away from him or shattering it with his axe)

I’ve seen a lot of negative reviews for this movie but I personally really enjoyed it, it’s eerie, unsettling, has a nice amount of suspense I think the cast did a great job especially Ethan Hawk and the actress who plays Gwen one of my fav horror movies of 2022.

I mean I'll say this much for the dad as a person who knows a lot of people who grew up and raised kids back then. During like the late 70s it was a much different time with how people saw things.
When he's angry about cops coming to work that's because it w very much grounds to be fired back then. People knew everybody in communities like that and it was always a hell hole to get talked about. When the cops come to your job there wasn't as much distrust back then so they considered you very seriously and when your boss hears you're getting asked about a bunch of missing kids that's is not a good look.
On top of that hearing that your kid is like your late wife and hearing things it's very concerning. Back then parenting was far harsher and mental health talks were nonexistant and the conditions for those with those issues were just awful. We knew nothing of what we know now about schizophrenia or social stigma and parents had no tools for children who had those conditions.
They treated mental issues very much like any other behavior and , very sad to say, hitting your kid was the only way a lot of parents had to hopefully get ingrained behaviors out. There wasn't talking like we do now and if they had them it wasn't a conversation to have.
I understand the father's point of view here because when tragedy like that happens you do anything to avoid your baby from having the same fate. Because back then when you had issues like that it RAN in your family. I mean you'd have 2 or 3 generations with no idea what was wrong with them and people in the community would still treat you like you were diseased. Trust me it was definitely a relief for a lot of people with generational mental health issues to have the internet.
But I will say I'm glad the director had that in this movie and it was very accurate for the time. The kids were written like kids from the time. I know it sounds like an adult but trust me you were expected to be more mature by Finns age back then. 18 wasn't going off to college that was you moved the Fook out and got a job at a local steel mill. Also those fights were tame lol. I swear to God there would be kids packing pocket knives fighting each other's. But that would be the funniest memories.
But I do love seeing yours, zavid, chu and I hope Alanda Parker soon. I loved this movie.

I was definitely a big fan of this movie! Loved the storyline the performances in this movie were absolutely phenomenal!! I cannot say enough great things about this movie. I hear there might be a sequel to this that would definitely be very interesting to see I wonder what they’d base a sequel off of 🤔. Definitely one of the better movies of 2022 in my opinion. Ethan Hawke did a incredible job playing the Grabber. Seeing him play a bad guy was definitely different as he’s never played a bad guy before. Definitely be adding this to my movie collection! Also loved Madeline Mcgraw’s character the sister she was hilarious and she had one of the best lines in the entire damn movie!

I watched the movie the day prior to your and Zzavid's reaction, and I would agree with much what you said. It was an okay horror film, uneven a bit in some ways, although I really liked the children characters and their acting, given it is the debut of their actors apparently. It also does give a lot of _Sinister_ vibes both in design and the way it's made, but granted, it is the same director. The supernatural part was also a bit confusing to me, but maybe that was the point (?).
I was thinking of mystery-horror movie with a similar premise, and if you haven't seen it, I really recommend you Sam Raimi's _The Gift_ (2001) with Cate Blanchett and Keanu Reeves (the latter especially reminded me of Finney and Gwen's father, to some degree). Also, read in the comments that you are making _The Burning_ reaction sometime in the future! Looking forward to it!

I saw yesterday that ZZAVID did a reaction to this movie, so I searched for the film. I plan on watching it later today (after getting some sleep). But now Nick also does a reaction to it. It is crazy how careless we were as kids back in the 80s-90s. I am grateful we always explored outdoors in large peer groups of at least 8-10 kids. There were multiple reported abduction attempts in our area when we were coming up. You just never know what is REALLY happening right next door. Do not live scared but do be aware of your surroundings at all times.

I’m late to the party but I do have a deep appreciation for this movie. First, we get Sinister vibes from this because it has the same director who also used the same Super 8 film for the visions as he did in Sinister. Then, I love how each ghost helped him little by little as we see every action that he took to escape (the hole he dug, the bars from the window, the rope/ cord he loosened, the code to the padlock, the phone itself, and finally the meat from the freezer) came back into play for the final showdown. Then the ghosts’ last words to the Grabber were also what they said to Fin earlier, just in a different context. There was just so much love in this production and it totally did the book justice! Loved it Nick!
I agree with your suggestion that Fynn had a ceramic toilet lid as a good weapon. But Robin thought the phone would be less conspicuous and easier to hide than a toilet lid if his plans for Fynn were a surprise attack on the grabber.

I was born in 74 and I don't remember my Mom becoming super protective until Adam Walsh's disappearance (1981). I was only 6 months older than him. We stayed out til dark and knew to be home before the sunset although if it was the neighbors then it was as long as we were in shouting distance. Went everywhere barefoot. Constantly outside playing.

My town does a trunk or treat every year, and for Halloween in 2022, a boy (maybe 9-10 years old), was dressed as the grabber and my “fan girl ass” asked to take a pic with him and he let me. I still have the pic lol
Fin talking to Robin for the last time had me in a puddle of tears. Same when Gwen and Fin reunite at the end of the movie 😭 AND YESSS THE BLACK VAN WAS THERE IN THE DRIVEWAY!! IT LITERALLY PISSES ME OFF TOO CUZ LIKE, certainly there weren’t many black vans in their area. The least the cops could’ve done was check the area that the kidnaps happened in, and they probably would’ve found it. If you’re gonna kidnap and murder kids, at least be smart and park your vehicle in the backyard (totally don’t condone to it, but be smart lmaooo) But yeah, seeing the van right there, especially when the cops (AND GWEN) were right across the street and didn’t see it right away, really pissed me off. But this was a really great movie and I enjoyed it. My adrenaline was sooo high.

So, growing up in the 80s, in the Southeast, I can say we grew up pretty similar. Kids would be out until dark (9ish during the summer), going off by ourselves on adventures through woods and around navy bases, etc., at 11 per CPS rules you could watch your siblings for multiple hours, and just a whole bunch of stuff that people find crazy now. Obviously, these kids were a bit stupider than most. I just think back then you had to learn how to survive earlier especially depending on where you lived. Being Mixed & Gay in those areas back then was Hell, in that Bible Belt area (SC, NC, & VA is where I moved around).
People have to remember those times we didn’t fear being kidnapped we just walked free

Also i think that Finney did inherit his mothers physic abilities, just like Gwen because he was able to hear and speak to the ghosts, unlike the others! And i LOVED the part where Bruce says, "FINNS.ARM.IS.MINT!" And finney snaps his neck, i thought that was epic! And it was also coincidental because when the grabber kidnapped Finney he said he should snap his neck and in the end Finn ended up snapping HIS neck!
I ABSOLUTELY AM OBSESSED WITH THIS MOVIE!! Great directing! The feel of the movie and how perfectly all the pieces fit together! And the acting is ABSOLUTELY SLAY! I read that this was actually the actor of Finns first movie! And he did AMAZING, especially considering that he mostly had to act on his own without another actor to play off of and considering his age! He's gonna go far in his career! And the actor for Gwen, that scene with the spanking is AMAZING! ESPECIALLY for her AGE!! OBSESSED WITH THIS MOVIE! And i was SO SAD when Robin gor kidnapped, i love how he stood up for finney and taught bullies a lesson. "Don't cry buddy!" LOVE IT. 😃

I really liked this movie, but the sister psychic abilities were kind of hyped up for not much in the end. Her brother killed the guy and would have been fine anyway. She helped find the corpses in the other house I guess, but they'd have been found eventually.
I suppose that is true, he did get out without her help!
My favourite part of this movie is that the movie doesn’t try and humanise the grabber like not giving him a proper name or a proper backstory.
Watched this movie today and thought it was a decent watch, but I definitely agree on most of your insights. Here are my two thoughts:
1) James Ransone plays Max, "the cute guy," and I absolutely agree! Loved him in both of the Sinister movies and he was also in It: Chapter Two as adult Eddie Kaspbrak. Seriously hot.
2) I was so distracted watching this when you have such cute kitties in the background! What are their names?

It's a shame James Ransone is a good actor in this and other things I've seen, because I just recently read a Twitter thread about some really weird behavior/fan interactions he's displayed. Makes me crazy when in a film like this the victim escapes and then is easily caught again because all they do is run past houses.
