    I love that you made the long water reservoir so good-looking, and putting that handsome lid on it is so practical. THEN you painted the sides! Looks great, and so do you! God be with you.

    Hi Don,
    To keep mosquitoes out of the water tank and from laying eggs in it.
    Try to add some screening to the underside of those doors. Also add screening at the gutter downspout. 👍🏾👍🏾

    Gosh. Why do you go to ALL that trouble building that 0:13 trough. For less trouble and very little money you could have bought 2 IBF containers and a gutter to supply your rain catchment system.

      lol...maybe he wanted to be frugal and noticed how the water collected off the solar panels underneath them, eh? Basically, trying to avoid a messy walking area by the solar panels. Who knows, but you can use your imagination right?

      Also pumping water up into IBC totes isnt practical for my set up currently. This way gravity does all the work.

    Nice Upgrade and WELCOME BACK.. Yes.. it feels to get a project completed or upgraded. SO.. because water runs downhill and seeks it's own level..at the 17:26 mark.. The right side panel should go UNDER the panel on it's left.. It's creating a big disruption in the flow.

    • @affordabledesertliving3487
      @affordabledesertliving3487  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep I did that so I could access the front part of the tank without raising all of the rest of the lids. That said I am thinking of reversing all of that . Good observation on your part!

    I like your tank. You build like me. Angle braces across the corners make weak corners strong for almost everything you build out of wood, without adding much weight or needing much wood, although what you did is sturdier for your tank, especially since you might end up using it for a table and to stand on. I want a table saw, too! Takes some extra power to run them.

    • @affordabledesertliving3487
      @affordabledesertliving3487  ปีที่แล้ว

    Don, how many watts are your solar panels, where did you purchase them? I know it’s been awhile since you got them but were they expensive and any helpful tips on any part of mounting or wiring them? Do you have batteries that you need to charge for when the sun isn’t as bright as you might want? What brand are your panels and model numbers? What do you have them plugged into inside your house? I really appreciate you and your videos. Thank you!!

    • @affordabledesertliving3487

      Hi Kenn. I have eight 340 watt panels. I purchased them from a california company called treepublic. Shipped right to my door. I dont have old fashioned lead acid batteries but a system called the Titan. two 2000 watt lithium ion batteries and 4000 watts of storage. etc. Check with my other vids where you can see details.

    It's wonderful that you are up and at em again. I do have a question about your new water catchment tank. Did you create an over flow means IF it should get too full?
    Should be simple to add flex pipe to channel that water to where you want it, near the top of your tank, perhaps near your gutter?

    or an even easier way, just mount small pieces of wood to the back side so it supports it against the wood of the tank when you lift the doors.

    Pressure-treated wood is generally safe to handle, but some precautions should be taken to minimize potential health risks:
    Modern pressure-treated wood is less toxic than older versions. Since 2003, the use of chromated copper arsenate (CCA) has been phased out for residential applications, replaced by safer alternatives like Alkaline Copper Quaternary (ACQ) and Propiconazole.
    The main risks come from inhaling sawdust when cutting or sanding pressure-treated wood, rather than simply handling it. When working with pressure-treated wood, it's advisable to:
    Wear a dust mask and eye protection when cutting or drilling
    Use gloves and long sleeves to minimize skin contact
    Work outdoors for better ventilation
    Wash hands after handling the wood, especially before eating or drinking
    Short-term exposure, such as carrying boards or working on a project for a day, is unlikely to cause significant health issues.
    Pressure-treated wood should not be used for cutting boards, food preparation surfaces, or indoor applications.
    Never burn pressure-treated wood, as this can release toxic chemicals in the smoke and ash.
    For older structures using CCA-treated wood, it's recommended to monitor for damage and apply sealants annually to reduce potential arsenic leaching

    first time watching one of your videos! i love it! im just 64 fixing to be 65 this year, and im a man married to steffy!
    my grandfather died of cancer in 1974, we had built a pole barn before that and i learned about turning the blade backwards to cut sheet metal back then!!
    it amazes me how the people who have never actually farmed or lived the way i have my entire life, get so excited when they learn a new trick or how to do something.i applaud you for what you are doing and the others are doing.
    i went to votec school for 1/2 day for 4 years from 8th grade to 11th grade to be a "printer" . i was an A+ student and worked doing a special project one summer! the very first job i applied for i was told that they would love to hire me but i was WHITE and the government had a "quota system" where the employer was required to have a set percentage of minorities!
    so i worked at jobs that DID NOT TAKE OUT TAXES FOR MOST OF MY LIFE!!
    i started reading mother earth news back in the early 1970's and organic farming and gardening before that.i shot my first deer at around 11 or 12 years of age. we always preserved our own meat and vegies etc... i took agriculture in college but did NOT want the degree, as i hate modern agriculture practices, and even refused to drive a grain truck for a local rancher (pay was CASH) because i REFUSE to participate in confinement feeding of cattle!
    met my second wife through an ad in mother earth news magazine, she was a midwife etc... i divorced her 10 years later because of her drug use!
    i met my 3rd and final wife online, she was a Filipino from lapulapu city on Cebu island. moved there to marry her and live, until my mom died expectantly. i had REFUSED to talk to her for years and thought i had been taken out of the trust as a beneficiary. but i got a bunch of money so we came back to the states. she is a citizen here now and has actually saved my life instead of letting me die and getting all my money!
    living off grid is all she has ever known and she has a BACHELORS DEGREE IN NURSING. she works at a hospital for 4 years now, and brings home the bacon and cooks it up too! i get $361 in social security,LOL we have cash put back for emergencies and several years of supplies stored up. if SHTF happens we will be just fine!

    For the paint brushes after use, just put the brush in Turpentine for two days. Then, remove and rinse, let dry. And you have a new paint brush. This only applies when using oil paint only, not water based paint. Your pond liner I notice is only 20 mil. Do you drink the water collected in that pond liner ?? I'm not sure that's safe for human consumption. 40 mil is safe. But, 20 mil may be good for anything except drinking water.

    • @affordabledesertliving3487

    That was a lot of work and a lot of materials for a fairly small tank. You could have purchased a new quality tank for the same or less. Or better yet, buy a used tank for cheap. Lots of used tanks for sale in Cochise county. My neighbor just bought a used 1,500 tank for $400.

    • @affordabledesertliving3487
      @affordabledesertliving3487  ปีที่แล้ว

      Your point is well taken. That said. I needed a tank that would fit in that specific place. The only thing that would do that would be Tractor Supply cattle watering tanks. But... they were more expensive than what it cost to build this 16 ft tank. Plus I would have to create some sort of lid on them to allow me to harvest even more water and with their oval shape it would have been a huge challenge. No places for easy hinges either. So all in all this was an economical build and I am happy with it. Thanks for watching.

I really do appreciate you helping all of us and giving of your time to do the videos that we watch to try to learn your techniques on how to complete a task. Thank you again!, what town town do you live. I am moving to McNeal on 28 acres. Nothing on the property so far but with your videos I am hoping to change that!!

      Hi Kenn. I purchased the tank from Oasis Rainwater harvesting in the Sierra Vista area. I will purchase two much larger ones to provide enough water for my "big house". Later on. Good luck on your move to McNeal. Definitely a great idea for being off grid.

    Wish I were closer to you, I could help you a lot! Hinges main strength comes from being set into the wood. They sell hinge butt joint tools or you can use wood chisels. The hinge properly recessed the supplied screws would have been fine...

    Tip for cutting metal roofing....old timer showed me about flipping a old circular saw blade around and putting it backwards on the saw and voila....use a old junk blade so save yer old blades when u replace. Use eye proyection

    Glad you've recovered. Assume the collected water is for landscape.
    The deck screws have a Torx head, much better than slotted or Phillips! I use them all the time.

    Don't you have the overlap backwards? You want the higher section to overlap on to the lower section. For some reason you have the lower section overlapping the higher section (at least from what I can see). So the water will leak into the tank (which should be perfectly fine, but isn't ideal if you later want to add filtration to the gutter)

      Great observation Nicholas! The original reason was that all of the plumbing is at the end with the small gutter that attaches to the flip up door. I figured this way I only needed to flip up that one door and the rest could stay shut. I planned to put gorilla tape in the seams for the water to flow down the complete length of the corrugated top. That said I am now thinking I might just change it up. Thanks for your excellent point.

    Glad to see you are back and healthy again. For paint brushes, I used to spent inordinate amounts of time at the end of each day washing them out. Then I learned that if I just wrapped them up in plastic kitchen wrap, still full of paint, they could sit for a week or so without hardening up. At the end of the job I'd just throw them away. why spend ten bucks worth of time cleaning them when a brand new brush costs only three or four bucks?

    Welcome back! Monsoon season 2023 is forecast to be hotter and dryer than normal but surely you’ll get enough catchment for your minimal needs!

    Good luck with your project! When I had a left over paint on brush I would wrap up the brush in a plastic bag with all the air out and it would normally be good for a couple days. Hope that helps!

    When you finish with your paint brushes clean them out and put then in a gallon ziplock bag. Works every time.

    You can cut that metal with your saw blade if it has hardened teeth , I was cutting wood on top of my old truck bed tool box and cut into the lid 3" and didn't even know it, and it never hurt the blade !!!😊
