- A generator is one of the most important items I currently own. Crucial for my living situation. In this video I review Harbor Freight's Predator 2000
I have been taken off guard and surprised by youtube subscribers wanting to donate to help me develop my property here. My belief is that such wonderful gestures shouldn’t be shunned in anyway. Can you imagine you refusing to open your presents at Christmas? I simply want to do whats right. Music by Bensound.com
Some have requested to make donations to my off grid living project. Many thanks.

Something that might make life easier is a generator cart, of course they are expensive. Knew someone who got a red flyer wagon for $20 used. Made it great for moving around where needed and kept it much cleaner.
Jeff that's an excellent idea! Thanks for watching.
Harbor Freight has a green garden cart that I use and recommend.
Very nice generator, glad to see everything is ok, missed your shows. Also I am outside of Willcox Arizona and would be more than happy to help you when you set up solar and/or wind. I currently have 4500 watts of panels, 8000 watt 110/220 inverter and batteries that powers my whole house.
Smiley, yer a prince! Wish I was in the neighborhood, I'd fetch the cold drinks.
Wow Bob. You have one serious set up! What a lovely kind offer to give me a hand. It will be a couple of months before I am working on solar. Thanks again! Also thanks for watching!
Sean I am so fortunate to have such great folks tuning in to my vids.
Solar panels, MPPT charge controller, 2000W inverter, and 4 lithium batteries. All the free electricity you want.
Yup that's the way to go. Only I would use deep cycle batteries for a few years to save on cost. I'm very happy with mine.
Not everyone can afford this set up
Thanks for such great suggestions folks. Major teaser here. Solar to come!

Does take a decent amount to get started, but gas , generator & trip to get gas cost more in the long run
Around how much would this kind of setup costs? Just an estimate is fine, just want to have an idea
After years of using my Honda generator at remote construction sites, the pull cord broke so I went to a lawnmower shop and replaced it. It only lasted a short time because some thief used the rebar cutter/bender I had in my truck to cut the big chain I used to lock it while inside Home Depot for 10 minutes. Don't leave your stuff unattended, even if locked. It's expensive.
Thanks Lynne for sharing and thanks so much for watching my videos!
Here's a tip for you: Get a generator with an electric starter! That way, you never have to yank away on the pull-cord, and starting it is as simple as pressing a button.
Also, if you get a 'dual fuel' generator, you can run it on propane, which not only smells WAY better, but you also don't have to worry about the carburetor getting gummed up.
Both are worthwhile upgrades, in my opinion, and I'm cheap-ass!
Thanks Tim G I wasnt aware there were dual fuel generators. Good tip.
I knew youd be back!!! Dispels all the rumors of you running off to join the Mexican Navy. Good review on the Predator.
Jeff I almost spit out my lunch reading your comment today! Priceless!
@@affordabledesertliving3487 When I heard that rumor I wanted to post a comment: ¡Gracias por tu servicio!
I also purchased property in Arizona, in Apache County, I opted to go with 2 Bluetti solar generators. With all the sun we get in Arizona, they work great. Bought the set including both the generator and solar panel, so don't have to mess with pull cords, keeping it fueled up etc. Also they don't make any noise. Most of my stuff is rechargeable but I'm also able to use my normal kitchen appliances with them as well. Just something worth considering.
Way to go Kevin! I strongly considered the Bluetti for sure. In the end I felt the Titan was a more powerful reliable option. But then that is before Bluetti upped their game with the latest models of solar generators. Glad to hear that you are happy with them and it sounds like a fantastic system. Thanks for watching!
I have both the Titan with 3 batteries and two smaller Bluetti sogens. You need enough solar for the Titan and it has to be set up correctly. Otherwise it will never fully charge. Redundancy with the Bluetti will allow the Titan to fully charge. Portable Bluetti pannels keep it going. Good luck, hope it all comes together for you.
After watching you with the generator, its safe to say a generator w an 'electric start' would be my 1st choice!😉
You're doin' a hell of a job with this channel, you've been a big help for researching AZ offgrid!
Thanks! & God Bless
Yes an electric start can be a plus. The super thing is that I rarely start up the generator now that I have 4000 watts of solar power at my disposal. So appreciate your watching and support! Cheers!
@@affordabledesertliving3487 Dont spoil it! I havent got to the solar episodes yet🤣
@@peteyb5150 LOL Sorry!
@@affordabledesertliving3487 Your Sierra Vista area looks cool, I visited Pearce a couple months ago and Diamond Bell Ranch, looking at acre lots. Apparently if you build w all the proper permits it'll be 8months timespan. But the 4acre opt-out that you did must've went much quicker😉

Wow I had no idea so many people cared or noticed.!
I live in Mohave County offgrid in an RV. I almost solely get all my power from solar. In reality I am now getting all my power from solar through snowy days and overcast days. I really don't miss the days of constantly running a generator or the expense. I believe I saw you have a couple panels. For the longest time I was running 320 watts of solar into 840 AH of golf cart batteries. With that 320 watts in panels I was meeting most all my power needs and running a 1300 CFM evap cooler. Last year I increased my solar panel wattage to 1240 to run a 3100 cfm evap cooler. I have a washing machine with high speed spinner, microwave, extra 12 volt cooler freezer and plenty of other things constantly drawing power. Most nights my battery power doesn't drop below 12.5 volts. Here in Arizona with the sun you can really get by with less panel wattage and more batteries to carry you threw the night. Enjoy watching you make progress and figuring your way through the inevitable issues of offgrid desert life!
lisa mcdonald. Thanks for the super reply and YES I AM WORKING on part of my solar set up as I write this. Thanks so much for watching!
I'm partial to propane generators.
They can sit for years with no carb issues.
I got a 3500 watt surge, 2800 watt continuous one.
Appx 10 hr on a 20 lb tank, low load. 4 hr near max rated load.
Propane can be stored indefinitely.
Nothing really wrong with the Harbor Freight generator.
Great tip F Huber. I am in the process of hooking up solar as we speak so I foresee a lot less generator use in the future. Stay tuned...!
Everyone I know that went through at least another brand before getting a Honda, say to “cry once and buy once” with Honda, because they work all the time, are serviceable, and last for ever.
I know, it is so tempting to buy other brands for half the price of the Hondas, especially when you seldom use them.
Thank you for the great video!
Merlin you are so correct. Since I hope to pretty much retire this generator when my solar is hooked up I thought it the best choice but I think your logic is spot on.
Also I've noticed that Honda's retain resale value.
Good to see you again friend! Harbor Freight. Sometimes hit or miss. Our post hole auger is fantastic. Glad your generator is working out and you're right, the extended warranty from HF is money well spent. Never a hassle getting a replacement. Thanks for sharing!👍
Bill I am always encouraged that you and Yvonne check things out especially since I have been looking at your vids for so long now and enjoying them. Great to hear about the post hole auger. Might need one here too!
One thing that you can do is plug in a small battery charger why your running the generator anyway hook it to a 12 volt car battery and you can get more bang for the buck that way, you can get a small inverter ( like a cigarette liter type that puts 110volts ) and you can run a couple of 110 volt led bulbs for light as a freebie long after you’ve turned the generator off. Call it A Minnie hybrid system
Solar array is 1/2 here now. In a few months will be hooked to solar hopefully.
That Harbor Freight genny is just fine, there are bigger ones but they usually use more fuel. The fellow running the channel 'Class A Living' has been using one for quite a while now, I think last time I saw it was up to 1400+ hours of run time. He has had to change the rope so if you have questions, go check him out.
If it ever does go out though, you might look at some of the Champion 3k models, they are the smallest made with a self start and they also have a dual fuel model that can be hooked up to large propane tank. That way maybe you and some neighbors can talk a propane company into bringing a truck around to fill gas up every month or two.
Great tip Jon. Hoping to retire the generator for the most part in a couple months once solar is in.
I have 2 of those Honda Eu2000i's.. and the parallel kit that connects them together for 22 amps. Years ago when I bought them.. they were only $900 each.. but they're easy to start, quiet and cheap enough to run.
I looked at the Hondas for sure. They were just too rich for my financial diet. Thanks for watching!
Have the same. Since 2004 hurricane season. Just the best value and reliability for your money. Never a bit of trouble despite having run several thousand hours.
Glad your back!
Thanks for watching Otis!
@@affordabledesertliving3487 you are living the dream! Keep posting. Hero
The predictor generator engine is a Kechlor engine. They bought the patent of the old Subaru Robyn industrial engine. Their are after market remote start and propane conversion kits available.
Wow thats a lot of great information Vicky. Thanks!
Very informative! Thank you Don. My fav part was when you went to your property line to show how quiet your generator is 😁
Thanks Patti. Love you and always appreciate your kind and insightful comments.
Good to see you again, Don. All the best.
Thanks John! Appreciate you being such a faithful subscriber.
It`s great to see you posting again.Like a lot of people i was beginning to worry if you were okay.Thankfully we can all see that your absolutely fine now. It`s good to hear that your still living life to the full what with bird watching trips and all.I do have a question about the generator. How loud is the generator inside the cabin.I would imagine that the volume would be low enough where you end up not noticing it.Like living near a train station when you don`t really notice the noise of the passing trains.Enjoyable video , please keep them coming .ATB.
Graeme. Yes I definitely felt refreshed after several days of birding. It is VERY DANGEROUS to have the predator inside an enclosed space. So I wont be putting it inside at all. Fumes could have me dead within hours. Fortunately I have a Big Buddy Heater that takes care of heat. So no need to have the generator inside. Thanks for watching!
@@affordabledesertliving3487 When i was talking about the noise from the generator i mean can you hear it inside the cabin when its running outside.Cheers
@@graemesaunderson4218 Sorry for not replying mate. While I am inside the cabin with the windows shut its hardly noticeable. So a very quiet machine.
So happy to see you back vlogging your life at your sanctum sanctorum. I wish for you continued happiness and half dozen solar panels with battery storage to power your fridge and a inverter split air conditioner that you are gonna need starting this month.
Spanky. Solar is coming. Mini split is planned but wont be installed for a few months. Bit by bit is how its going. Thanks for watching!
You didn’t mention how fuel efficient the generator is! That’s a huge plus! I have the predator 1400 to run a window unit ac in my camper trailer. It does the job very well for about $4 in gas per day. You could do the same with yours and keep your cabin cool in summer. 🙂👍
My cabin stays quite cool because its so well insulated to be honest.
Great return from the desert !!! Thanks for the review of the Pedrator (even if I am not a user), I appreciate the time for the details that help !!! Have you installed a water tank? We are all looking at the details in your videos ...
But please don't make us wait so long for the next vid !!!
Carolina beier how could a youtube guy ask for any more kind and thoughtful subscribers! Yes I will profile the water tank after a bit. I had a feeling folks would see it. LOL. Next vid coming a lot sooner! Thanks so much for watching!
Very happy your doing ok, and back on line. Yes your rigjt about the sta bil , its recommended to add it to your machine when uts put away for a long time , like months , prevents gummig up the carb , fuel lines. Take care , lookikng forward to your next video , thanks Don.
Robert thanks a ton for your faithful watching of my vids.
If you are going to store it for a while you should shut it down by closing off a fuel valve at the tank (hopefully it is equipped with one) and let it run until it stops to totally drain the system. Then drain the tank. I've been fooling with gasoline storage for years and even with stabilizer you can have problems in as little as 3 months storage.
@@bearchow1929 This is super valuable information. This generator is super simple so dont think it has a fuel valve. I will check next time I change the oil. Great info! The other thing of course is that I could run it every couple of weeks whether I need to or not. Thanks for watching!
@@affordabledesertliving3487 Running it every few weeks for an hour or two is definitely an option.
@@affordabledesertliving3487 For what it is worth we have an off-grid ranch in western Arizona about 15 miles east of Salome.
I think it's great that you can just go to Sierra Vista and go to big stores like Harbor Freight! In the place where I'll be living off grid, the nearest Walmart is 90 minutes away, same with Home Depot! And even the nearest gas station is 23 miles away. Your videos make me wish I would try Arizona but I doubt I could grow food there. Plus I need trees in my property.
Thanks for watching my vids Cringe Panda. Actually lots of folks grow food here. You just use shade cloths and use appropriate water. Also fast growing trees like Aleppo pine are tall in no time. All about choosing the right things. I definitely appreciate that Bisbee is only 20 min away and Sierra Vista is close also.
Well done Don! Enjoy the birding !
Scott birding was super. Will be us in a few months back to the Chirichuas.
Cheaper is not always better. I looked at the Predator and read a lot of reviews. I did the same with the Honda 2200 and bought the Honda for my 17 ft travel trailer. I converted the Honda to propane so now I can choose which fuel I want to power it.
Sounds like a wise plan Gene.
I own 3 Predator generators with zero issues, I would not spend the money for a Honda.
That's a fine generator, indeed... and I expect, quite ample for necessary power needs. However, It seems to me that living in the desert would be most conducive to celebrating the beautiful efficiency of a solar system. Have you considered same? Many thanks for sharing your adventure... your "honeycomb hideout" is positively brilliant!
Ty thanks for such insightful comments. Yes indeed. Solar is one the way!
Missed you. Glad you're back. We have a solar power bank on order.
That one is too noisy for me. I live rural for the quiet silence.
Thanks for your lovely concern Victoria. Solar is 1/2 here and will get everything set up eventually. Then nice and quiet for me too.

I see you have a water tank. I initially bought the harbor freight tank and motor for my house that is on a well system. It worked ok , if you needed one to start it would make do. I had to save up for a year before I could upgrade to something better. We make do with our budgets. So glad you are thriving. Thank you for the reviews and update.

I've had a Colman 'powermate' for four years. Change oil every 30 hrs.
Was told not to leave out in the rain.
I bungee a golf umbrella to it during showers. 3 ft by 3 ft ply scaps on angle can direct the noise down. Besides the exhaust , the whole thing gives off noise.
Good advice on the oil Kev. I will follow yours and others advice and change my oil more often. Yep rain can be a bad one. My generator lives under a large outdoor table when I am not filming it etc. Thanks for watching!
Those Predator generators are highly rated. Consumer Reports did a comparison with the Honda and found them about equal. The biggest drawback they listed was parts availabilty if you ever need parts. I bought one myself, but I got the 3500 watt unit.
Everyone I know that got a Predator generator (and/or other brands) replaced with a Honda, say that they are so much better in functionality, durability, replacement parts, servicing, etc, it was worth the extra money, and that they should have done it since the beginning.
Merlin yeah I love Hondas. Hope the predator lasts until I am rich and famous and then I will get a Honda. LOL.
You could make a small box just for the generator to keep it out of the weather, and if you isolate the box, you would remove a lot of the noise also. ....?
Thanks John. I was a bit worried about it overheating in a box. But am open to suggestions.
@@affordabledesertliving3487
Yes you right on that.
One of my uncles dug a hole to eliminate some of the noise from his generator, guess what?
His generator blew, due to overheating.
That kind of motor needs an open air flow.
You can build a shade, without walls.
Let it breath fresh air.

MsNevadakid. Thanks so much for your encouragement and yeah the ropes on these are very poor. But still a great generator!
Glad to see you again. I have been waiting eagerly for more videos. You should consider getting solar for your electricity.
Right on the money Margaret. I now have 1/2 of my solar purchased so stay tuned!
Good to hear from you Don. I agree with your observation that a few extra cinder blocks are mighty handy. I would go so far as to say that a few cinder blocks, a roll of duct tape, a coffee can full of an assortment of nails and screws, and a few odd pieces of wire are essential items for off grid survival. As my Grandpa would say, " They're handier than socks on a rooster". Or something like that ? Stay Busy my friend.
"socks on a rooster" Thats a good one! My Dad used to say... strong as a nest of skunks.
Really glad to see you are alive & well. You were missed.
Dutch Webb. That means a lot. I had no idea so many people would care or even bother to watch my vids.
I can see that you have one huge and very serious problem.
With my business I have seen this problem cause other people in my business really big headaches. So if I were you I would fix this problem right away. I have a Honda 2200 and like you I depend on it for my heat and other things. So get yourself a very good chain and a really good lock today and lock it up. There are very desperate people that will steal it in a heart beat. I have seen it happen several times to nice guys like you. Honda offers a metal security bracket that goes onto the handle so someone can't cut the handle and remove the chain. I don't know if the predator offers it but in any case lock it up.
I woke up in Utah in 6" of snow one morning after running my generator all night and there was foot prints in the snow all around the truck I was sleeping in. If I had not secured that generator as well as I did it would have been stolen. And trust me you may think it's not going to happen to you because your in a remote area but those generator have a way of growing legs. Just ask my brother who lives off grid like you. He went to town and upon arrival back home ... no more generator. And lock it up inside your home as well when you go to town too. Just for extra security. Your only inviteing criminals if you dont show them that you are securing your stuff and you will find in time its usually someone you know or have come in contact with.... Hope you find this useful.... One last tip wrap the chain with a pool noodle ( floating device) to insulate and minimize rattling of the chain against the generator.
Reference: TH-cam (South Georgia hotshot : someone stole our generator.)
Steve thanks for watching and your concern. Sadly enough your correct. So many light fingered types.
@@affordabledesertliving3487 zombies pulling on chainsaws all night lead to using para cord for pull cords ZOMBIE approved and ZOMBIE strong
The Predator 3500 has electric start. All you'd need is a little dolly to wheel it around. I have a pair of the 2000s for emergency power but I'd never go off grid with them. The pull cord is unreliable and spare parts, like if you strip one of those oil plugs, are really difficult to find.
dvfreelancer this is excellent information. Many thanks.

I can always take prayers Dan Lemons! Many thanks for your love and kindness!
Maybe try using some heat shrink tubing around the area where the pull cord is fraying to protect it. I’ve heard of people using that trick with success, not sure how well it would work with this particular generator, but maybe something to consider. Otherwise maybe you could find a small engine repair place to install a better quality pull cord.
Brandon I think that's excellent advise. I purchased a 2 year extended warranty and so if it breaks when the warranty is up I think that is a great idea to get a small engine guy to put something serious in there for a pull cord.

Thanks Richard! Bird vids coming!
