Are there any rare/expensive games that you may regret buying or spent too much on in retrospect?

I totally wish I hadn't bought Ranma 1/2 [the side scroller] for the PC-Engine CD.
Also, I paid $90 for the Mega Drive release of Strider because there was NO WAY that would come to America.

Having a compulsion to continue collecting coupled with FOMO has really sapped my mental state. It just became depressing after a while once I realized I probably won't get the chance to play through what I have now, let alone whatever I'll acquire in the future. So what's really the point? The stuff looks amazing on a shelf, but I'm feeling a stronger and stronger pull toward a minimalist lifestyle, ironically, BECAUSE I became a collector. If you find your happiness is hinged on anything outside of your rational mind (i.e. stuff, relationships, etc), you should re-evaluate your perspective.

Ian never misses a chance to undermine Pat's NES collecting efforts, and the amount of money he's spent on it. "Oh I definitely regret collecting NES games. Particular games I spent $80 or $90 on". Could you be any more passive aggressive Ian? You are all class Pat.

Battle Toads for the Amiga CD32. I thought it would fix the flaws of the nes version and also have better music and graphics. Boy was I wrong LOL

    • @CommodoreFan64
      @CommodoreFan64 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Well that was more, or less a port of the Amiga 500 version correct? Sadly a lot of Amiga CD32 games were nothing but piss poor ports that failed to use the controller correctly.

    • @Boscoand
      @Boscoand 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Commodorefan64 The thing that sucks is that I didn't grow up with a amiga computer. Just the cd32 so I missed out on alot of great amiga games. I did have the floppy drive to hock into the cd32 so I was able to play some classic amiga floppy games (amiga 500 version of north and south is my favorite. No other port comes close to that one imo). I'm happy to say that one of the first things I got when I moved into an apartment is a amiga 1200 computer. I still have my cd32, but it doesn't gets much use anymore. One cd32 game I don't regreat buying is the cd32 version of the Chaos Engine. Dam the music in that game is awesome. And the extra colors used for that version.

Bosco63and1/3 In some ways, the Gameboy port (Battletoads in Ragnarok’s World) fixes the issues of the more precise stages in the NES version; the Turbo Tunnel and Clinger Winger.
I wish it had all the stages, as aside from the zoomed in graphics, the presentation and music are solid overall. I’m probably also one of the few players who enjoy the Terra Tubes and the Rat Race stages.

I mostly just use flash carts these days. I never paid more than $100 for any video game in my life before that, though, and that $100 game was a one-time indulgence. I've also never bought a game I wasn't interested in playing, so I feel pretty good about all my past purchases, thankfully. I learned when I was collecting Magic: The Gathering cards like crazy decades ago how out-of-control that sort of thing can get and try to regret-proof other ongoing hobby endeavors as much as possible.

Dude I noticed you're holding a copy of Magic Knight Rayearth!!! I love that game, it reminds me of Sailor Moon. I loved it so much i bought all 3 disc variants. Of course it was going for $70-100 back then. So I seriously bought three copies for under the price of one now. I miss 2010-2011. I also bought Popful Mail cib for $75 and space adventure for $100. I'm surprised you're not holding that one either! Awesome games!!

This is a good question. Ian's on point here. I'm in that weird zone with Vita games. I'm still buying CIB that I will likely never play. Not sure if picking some of these games up now will pay off later or not. Really want to see what happens after Gamestop stops selling Vita games. It's already getting difficult to find some CIB Vita games in the wild.

As odd as this sounds, I bought a Xbox 360 when the Xbone had just come out, and with trying to build my Nintendo library as well, I held on to the 360 for about 4 years not having bought many games or even using it much. Only good thing to come out of it was trading it in to gamestop with the games I had to buy my Nintendo Switch and MK8D

With WonderSwan, I have no regrets. Only got about 10 games but with Makaimura and Klonoa among them, I can feel satisfied. No Mega Man. I tried the B&W Rockman and Forte on emulator first and wasn't too interested. I didn't get Rockman.EXE because I wrongly assumed it was the same game as Battle Network on GBA. I think my collection is otherwise a puzzle game called Mingle Magnet, an action-RPG called Star Hearts, and the Square games. (Mingle Magnet was by a company called HAL Corporation which, from archive.org might in fact be related to the famous HAL company, their comparatively small PC division that exists/existed).

me too usually, but you can't complain about 'there aren't enough copies to instantly send it' when the whole modus operandi of the scummy company you're buying from is artificial scarcity so they cam overcharge for a small indie game that is only worth $5-10 at most

Also regret NOT buying certain games, I will always remember that day in Akihabara when I saw Lickle (Little Samson) CIB for $10. I passed out on it because I wanted to check what the game was first. It was gone when I went back. =(

I don't pay more than $40 for NES stuff. Even in the last few years I've managed to get pretty rare stuff for extremely cheap. I bought Maxi 15 at a swap meet for $20 a few years ago. I'll probably never own anything super big ticket. I dont care much about it either.

Phantasy Star for the Master System, it was the most expensive game I bought. I liked it but I underestimated how grindy and labirintine a game like that could be towards the end and it cost me about 60 Euros, it doesn't help that I got a corrupted save at a certain point and had to restart the game from scratch. After that I only bought the cheaper Golvellius and Wonder Boy 3: The Dragon's Trap (this one is awesome) for the MS and Soleil for the Mega Drive (another one I really enjoyed, usually very expensive but I got lucky for once) and then got an Everdrive because at that point it was either that or spend 100+ Euros for games like Castlevania Bloodlines/New Generation/Vampire Killer (dear Konami, settle on a title dammit!), Phantasy Star IV (best in the series) or Streets of Rage 3 and I couldn't possibly afford those prices. In hindsight I think I should have skipped Phantasy Star and gone directly to the remaining cheap ones I was interested in, reserving it for the everdrive like the other expensive titles.

Most money I've ever put into a single game is Smash Bros for the Wii U. I put 100 dollars into the collectors edition but it came with a Smash 4 gamecube controller (which I knew could be resold for a portion of what I bought the game for) and the gamecube adapter. Also the fact that I knew I would put 100s of hours into it. Unless it's a game I know I will get my money's worth on it mostly dosent surpass 20 dollars.

I have story about regretting a trade I made years ago.
It was the year 2002, my local game traders had a preowned copy of street fighter alpha 3 for dreamcast that I just had to have. It cost 50 bucks and I was trying to reign in my spending a bit so I enquired about trading in my spare Super Nintendo console for it. They said they could do that trade if I threw in a couple of games. I didn't have any shit games to trade but I had bought a super wildcard which came with hundreds of games ripped to floppy disc. And with emulation also making the quality games that I had hunted seemingly obsolete I made the unwise decision to trade in my axelay and castlevania IV cart along with the console. To make matters worse the game disc didn't even work and I was too busy with studying and work to hold them to account (something I still regret) years later tho when I looked at what castlevania IV goes for on eBay I was crushed knowing that I had foolishly agreed to had denied me a quality game that had gone up in value quite a lot. Even a Super Nintendo console went up in value, at the time you could get one for around 20 bucks at a pawn shop but now they go for 4-5 times that amount which is just crazy. At the time it seemed like false economy to try and find bad games for 10 bucks to throw in but I wish I had not bothered because a few years later alpha anthology released on PlayStation 2 and that was my go today of playing SFA3 at home.

I wouldn't say REGRET, but I was a little dissapointed by MUSHA Aleste if only for the ridiculous amount of hype over it. thankfully only payed $60 for it, CIB
gameplay wise, I just kinda like Thunder Force III/IV, Raiden Trad, Gley Lancer etc. much better.
The First boss in Musha is just hilariously boring in its last phase too

It is more a matter of taste I guess. I really like Musha Aleste and I have my reasons for that but doesn't mean everyone have to love it too. the best thing you can do is always emulate or at least watch some videos before buying, that helped me a lot and that's why my collection is mostly filled with games I like and want to play.

Like exactly, it is an absolutely impressive game, but it's not a MUST HAVE to me, like there are a lot of genesis/MD shooters that are better for the same huge amount of money, if not far less. $60 was worth it, $400 is not.

The only thing that truly pisses me off are assholes who ruin the fun by buying things simply because they're rare and never intend to use them. Prices skyrocket, games sit in captivity for decades, and the hobby suffers, simply because some shithead with deep pockets wanted to turn a profit at an alarmingly slow rate.
Go make your money on something actually worth investing in.

One big regret I had was buying Chicken Run for PC way, way back then. I wasn't entirely into it (neither I was into the movie, I didn't dislike it but didn't catch my interest), but I was kinda forced to get it because my sister wanted it. The fucking thing was released in a poor state and had a bug where you would constantly jump, making it unplayable. Nice Christmas.
Another one was New Super Mario Bros. which I bought when I got a NDS. It let me down haaaard. While I don't think it's a bad game at all (although the home console NSMB are more fun to me), getting into a new interesting system through a simple retro-inspired 2D platformer wasn't the smartest idea. Ironically I ended up changing it for Super Mario 64 DS, which I enjoyed sooo much more, and while not a new experience, at least was a full 3D platformer on a handheld system with new stuff.
Oh, I also regret living in Europe while liking gaming in the past. *Fuck you, 50hz. what a colossal waste of money.*

I haven't been able to bite the bullet and get a really expensive game. I paid $100 CAD for Chrono Trigger loose and that's the big purchase. Haven't exceeded $80 for a game otherwise. I have stuff that's worth a fair bit but I bought it years ago. My biggest regrets are games that I had heard good things about but totally hated once I played them. Some of those I paid very little for. I paid like $2 for NBA Hangtime on the SNES and I thought it was a terrible conversion and I get upset thinking about it. The game cost nothing but I hate having its presence stink up the rest of my collection. I'm not going for complete collections, I get games that I think are good and bad games mess that up. There is no price tag that is worth it for something you don't even want to have.

Yep I also regret buying things and yep I just sold off my duo R and the 20 games I had bought for it with a few months. I don't keep around things that only have a few games that I like anymore. Like my Saturn stuff my Genesis stuff and neogeo I sold off because of the cost of the aes games is much higher now. I will replace it with an mvs. That's gonna be it possible Dreamcast I don't play RPGs and stick to mostly action or arcade games especially fighting. I sold my NES collection in 2007 started to buy some things back but lost interest so I stopped and just sold off what I had. More of this might come unless your an absolute die hard gamer I never truly was or it be harder to part with.

Nope, never regretted buying a rare expensive game; I always do the research or play the game before I buy it, to know it's something I'd like to play.
The only ''expensive'' game I can think of regret buying is the digital version of Magician Lord on the Nintendo Switch. The original game for the Neo Geo AES goes for $100+; for the Switch $8. So I saved myself a lot of money by not getting the AES version, but that's why I always buy the digital version 1st, before buying the real deal AES games. Magician Lord would be a good game if it weren't for it's troll difficulty.

It's was fun back in day, riding around with a couple friends, hitting pawn shops and flea markets. Actually, I think the social aspect and the hunt was more fun than playing the games.
The sad fact of game collecting is you're eventually going to sell it all off for one reason or another. Unless you're rich, sooner or later, you'll need the money back.
If it's not for money, you'll look at all of that crap sitting on shelves, in boxes, think about how much you spent, the amount of space it consumes and how much you actually play the stuff. Once you ponder that, the sell off begins....
I kept the best of my Saturn, PS1/2 stuff and got rid of everything else.
Then there is all of the indirect crap like keeping CRT TVs around or buying an expensive niche scaler, hunting retro repair services etc...
Barring all that mess, ultimately you can't take it with you. If it doesn't bring you enjoyment, get rid of it. Its not worth it.

If you regret buying an expensive/rare game, there is an easy solution... sell it. I hate when people brag about buying rare games when they were cheap, then say they aren't worth the current price, yet aren't selling their copy. If you truly believe that, then you would sell it. You can't say something is less than it's value and still hold on to it, that makes no sense. A more accurate statement is "I bought this game when I could afford it, and now I wouldn't be able to afford the current price." The only legitimate reason to continue holding on to a game if you think it isn't worth the value is because you are hoping to sell it for more later (investment).
