    You can use the wire stripper (little groove near the bottle opener) instead of spoiling the tweezers. It works in a single shot

    With the firefly use the wire stripper on the bottle opener. Hold the rod in the notch with 1 finger and pull through. More consistant sparkage and much reduced chance of snappage

    Just ordered the Swiss Clip. I usually use a lanyard choked around my belt loop to suspend the knife in my pocket, secure as well as comfortable because the knife stays vertical. It doesnt work with my snowshoeing/ winter trekking attire though, so I think the clip be more handy than stashing my knife in the pack. One thing I noticed though is that clip is designed for a SAK with the key ring on the Awl side, some of my older ones have the ring on the wrong side for the clip to work.

    Using the Firefly, Tortoise recommends using the edge as a striking surface as opposed to the wider flat side to help prevent breakage of the Firefly. Using the edge offers a bit more strength while scrapping.

      the wire stripper notch, back of the saw, and awl all work to strike the firefly.

      Always support the Firefly ferro/magnesium stick with your finger, a piece of wood or by holding it on the SAK blade and striking with another blade or using the back of the wood saw.
      Otherwise you WILL break the Firefly ferro rod and end up with ever smaller pieces.
      It must be supported .

    That’s a good idea using the tweezers for ferro rod! If a knife doesn’t have a decent spine for ferro rod or scraping tinder, I usually just make a few flat passes on the spine with a metal file and leave it rough as is after filing.

      @nomercyinc6783 the spine of the blade is not sharp enough to strike a ferro rod but the saw is!

    Another great video. Very good idea to use the tweezer as the striker. From what I hear you can also use the wire stripper on the bottle lifter to pull the ferro rod through to create spark.

    • @urbanknifeguy
      @urbanknifeguy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thanks a lot! I have tried but not with great success. EDIT: Actually it works well if you still have straight edges on the corner of the ferro rod. Then you fit the rod through the wire stripper and pull. I still favour the tweezers as it is less likely to break the thin ferro rod. I felt when I tried with the larger tools, more pressure is naturally added and can stress it more. So would recommend using the tweezers.

    Great video! As far as the firefly, I think it's recommended to strike it on the skinny side to help give it as much structural integrity as possible over time. I would also recommend adding a 3X2 MM magnet to the hook or can opener ( can opener can take a 6X2mm magnet if you want) it's pretty cool that you can use it to magnetize the needle so you can use the needle to find north

    As for the Firefly ferrorod - it's ment to be used in a vertical position, preferably supported by something solid underneath (split piece of wood etc.).
    If you don't have a knife with a saw, which has a crisp 90° spine, just take a file and file down the rounded underside, which is hidden in closed position. Cap lifter and can opener, even that silly parcel hook, some models come with.

    It’s OK to use this Firefly as your main source of fire if you know how to use it (and have good enough tinder). You can get hundreds of fires out of each rod. Mine came in an eight-pack. It doesn’t take too much trying before you really become proficient and can trust it.

    • @urbanknifeguy
      @urbanknifeguy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would use it as a main source for an emergency kit, if that makes sense. For economics and practicality, I think a larger "standard' Ferro rod would be the way to go for every-fire use. But I agree once you get used to the Firefly, it is not difficult to use.

    Actually for the firefly, you should strike it on the narrow side, not the flat side. The reason, the narrow side is stronger than the flat. Also, support it in the middle of the striker with your index finger so it does not stress it, it will never break if you follow the instructions that is sent with it. I have had one of these in my SAK since they came out with it on kisckstarter.

    If so it's useless.

    Thanks for the upload! I'd been looking at Swissqlips but here in the UK they really are horrendously expensive at over £30 including delivery. But I have just pimped up my Climber with a much more cost effective solution, an ebay seller here sells replacement scales with a pocket clip screwed in and glued on the inside. I bought black plus scales with a black clip, the screws are black too and he made a really good job of it, and they only cost £10 which you would pay for replacement scales without a clip on them anyway. So this is now a great urban EDC for my rotation which trumps a Compact imo as I rate the extra blade and reamer, plus those combination tools are very awkward to use on Philips screws whereas the can opener on my Climber can deal with them easily. The Fireant firesteels are also horrendously expensive so I'll pass on those too, I always have a larger firesteel on me anyway, in my home made ''cache belt'', it's like the expensive Wazoo ones but is just a basic nylon belt with a zipped compartment on the inside in which I keep a basic survival kit, similar to what many people keep in an Altoids tin, including firesteel, storm matches, purification tablets, alcohol wipes, emergency cash, and a Ruike S11 knife as a last ditch backup blade. Probably overkill living it London lol but I don't notice it's there and better to have it and not need it than not have it and need it.

    • @urbanknifeguy
      @urbanknifeguy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      £30 for the SwissQlip is expensive! But looks like you found an alternative. Is the finishing decent for that clip? A subscriber GlockNinja turned me on to the Victorinox Walker - which I had no idea existed. I think it is a great EDC if you need a saw. Definitely will be my hiking pocket knife aside from my fixed blade and Swiss Soldier in the survival pouch. Yes, I do think your kit is overkill for London 😅😝

    • @simonh6371
      @simonh6371 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@urbanknifeguy Yes my scale (it's only one of them obviousy) with clip is perfectly finished, black clip with black screws on a black scale, the glue is only on the inside which you don't see when it's fitted. I know my kit is overkill but the beauty of it is that it's invisible and I don't even feel it in the belt, whereas an Altoids tin would bulge in a pocket, and a pouch would look dorky, same as cargo pants or one of those paracord bracelets would...as it is I wear trendy European style fitted clothes and look very urban and actually well dressed compared to a lot of people here. The gear in my pockets also doesn't really bulge or look out of place, but all of it - knife and sometimes multitool (whichever I'm carrying that day), lighters and flashlight - all comes in very handy on a regular basis.

    It appears that the clip would only be useful if the toothpick and tweezers are on the opposite end. Some Victorinox models have the lanyard ring on the same end, so the pocket clip would block access to them. That is just my impression; I may be wrong.

    • @urbanknifeguy
      @urbanknifeguy  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      For normal scales, the tweezers will be hard to access, and you need the toothpick to help pick at it 😅. Thanks for watching!

    a modification anyone can do:
    pull out the toothpick, look for the nub that secures it in place and cut it off just below that.

    FYI 1) the mini-screwdriver also fits the corkscrews of Wengers & Swiss Buck Wengers and can be made to fit the corkscrew on the Swiza 2) Experience has taught me that the original SwissQlip is not as good as the un-branded models, they are BTW all made in China and the screws on the un-branded models have Torx heads making them easier to tighten & none of those I bought with the Torx head screw needed an additional washer ( plain or spring ) to make them fit tightly unlike a number of the SwissQlip screws which did .

      @@urbanknifeguy Happy Tuesday UKG , I cannot recommend a Swiza knife & I regret buying my 2 as they are not up to Victorinox standard and are as much as 50% more expensive than comparative Victorinox models. 1) they are not sharp out of the box 2) they have blade wiggle 3) they have a liner gap space between the blade & handle 4) their so called ergonomic shape is no such thing as their thin spiny tools protrude & cause a hot spot when you are using the knife ( if you are using the saw & have the blade closed - the spine of the blade is sharp & digs into your palm making sawing uncomfortable and vice versa with the blade open & the saw closed ) 5) the saw is inferior to that of Victorinox ( see Felix Immlers comparison video of the tools on the Swiza with those of Victorinox ) 6 ) their claim that the enlarged nail nick cut out allows for both right & left handed opening - it does not as if you have both a blade & another large tool like a saw or gutting blade they block access from one side. 7) they do not come with a key chain eyelet or lanyard hole ( you have to pay extra for the key chain eyelet & you still don't get a split ring supplied with it! ) and their banana shape means they do not fit into any pocket sheath & only in their expensive nylon belt pouch ).

      @@stevesinclair4159 I have the secondary blade clip point version, from somewhere late nineties I think. I don't use it that much so I put the miniscrewdriver into the Victorinox Champion from 80's where it fits perfectly.

    Read their directions, clearly, they say to scrape on the narrow side of the ferro rod, reason it is less likely to break. Next, they show to hold the ferro rod at the top and bottom with the ferro rod resting on one's fingers, reason it is less likely to break. Here is the link to the video they created demonstrating how to use their ferro rod: th-cam.com/video/5W-3YQRXUM4/w-d-xo.html

    Swapping your toothpick for a miniature ferro rod is an obsolete idea.
    Victorinox created a solution to that by making a miniature ferro rod along with fire starters that are shaped to fit into the corkscrew. I think it's called the Fire Ant Starter Kit.I added one to my 50 year old Swiss Army knife and have used them on several occasions, i can assure you they work perfectly.
    Victorinox Fireant is pretty neat! #shorts / Rising S Bunkers
