- In this video, I look at the historic consulship of Appius Claudius Caudex. Despite not achieving a triumph or a famous victory, this member of the famed Claudii was the first Roman to command an army outside of the Italian peninsula. It is also arguable that his actions, which may or may not have been in line with the Senate's instructions, led directly to the three Punic Wars.
