- The father of Augustus, Gaius Octavius was a rising star in the Senate at the time of his death. Naturally talented and wealthier than most, Octavius could have changed the course of the Late Republic if he had lived longer.

It was the summer of 63! (BC)
Me and some guys from Rome
Had a legion and we tried real hard
Justinius died in battle and Junius got decimated
I should've known we'd never get far..
oh yea, back in the summer of 63 BC
That redhead (from HBO's Rome probably) is disturbingly beautiful with that hair and makeup. I can't concentrate.
Watch the show for the Full Monty 😂
Polly Walker should have been in more stuff.
A very smooth operator.
Good coverage of a such a prominent figure of Romes history!
Much needed commentary on a figure who has been unjustly obscured. Thank you!
Love these!! Such great long form content to listen to :)
I wish you were my history teacher in high school.
Being able to make the important but more boring characters of history into a palatable lecture without having to resort to pomp and antics takes real talent.
Thank you for teaching me about this historical figure better than anyone in the educational system ever bothered trying.
Really good and interesting video. It changes how i view Octavian, as he is often depicted as a nobody that Caesar elevated.
Do you think that the capability of his father might have had an affect on Caesar choosing him as his heir?
Wake up babe, new Thersites Rome video
Oh wow... I had no idea August's father was such a capable individual. It really is a shame that we didn't get to see more of him in during the 2nd Roman civil war. Sounds like he was on his way to A tier status. Gaius Octavius dying before he made it home to celebrate his triumph, is so disheartening to hear...
The real question is, are we gonna get a long form dive into Caesar, Augustus, Pompey and the Julian Emperors
When he covers litteraly everyone else mentioned in Roman historical sources maybe.
For sure. I want to cover some of the lesser known figures first and then move into the major players.
"or......someone chastised him for being a bit of a dick" 😂😂
your students must have a whale of a time.
Gaius my son, promise me you will not become more powerful then the senate after I die….
There it is!
All I knew him for were the dreams and omens suetonius reports of the birth of his son xD
I never liked the depiction of August's mother in rome eveb thought her plot in season 2 is interesting i would like more polical smart octiva though.
In real life, Augustus mother died before the battle Actium, while Burtius Mother lived a longer life.
I agree but I think the showrunner's rationale was that they needed a Livia-esque character to be the politically aware, conniving and self-interested matriarch without adding another character to an already large cast. She's basically the Cersei Lannister of HBO's Rome.
@@parastroika2393I think Bruno Heller said in interviews he used Atia as a stand in for Fulvia.
the way women in general in that show were depicted is pretty abhorrent. Cleopatra as a sex/drug addict, Augustus' mom sleeping around more than Caesar, Augustus's sister sleeping with Augustus (what is the deal with HBO series in the early 00s and incest?)
@@ii121 It was the apex of anything goes morality that always proceeds the Victorians.
There should be a thing about Roman history and politics: you have to be a keister before you are a consul😂
Yay
Would like to see your thoughts on those about to die
It's BC, not BCE
👍👍👍
has he always used BCE and CE? Gross.
BCE? What’s that mean Before Christian Era?
Before Christian Era/Before Current Era
Before common era
@@justmoritz And what was it that started the common era?
@@cnote6923 did someone named Common live and die around that time point? I’m confused
@@justmoritz what is common about it?
