I almost feel like Ken Whiting is my personal kayak instructor. I started out watching his rolling videos, then got turned on to Canada by PaddleTV. Leading up to my trip to the Ottowa this summer, the videos about the main and middle channels were a great help, though I was not prepared. Fortunately OKS was there to show me the ropes, thanks to David Silk and Casey Jones.

I watched this video for the 15th time. I have decided to go back to the Ottawa this summer, even though I was terrified last year. I got worked on both channels last
summer,. but believe it or not I did better on the main channel than the middle. I had more rolls than swims, so I call that a victory. My main nemesis is McCoy's, so I watch this video repeatedly in hopes of starting my days with a better feeling.

:) The Ottawa is a wonderfully safe river because it's deep, the rapids are short, and the water is warm... but it's also one of the most intimidating rivers because it's so big and pushy. Good luck and have a great time!!

Don't forget about the amazing programs offered at Owl and MKC and our friends on the Quebec side: Esprit, HorizonX and Momentum!

That's true, although I'm not familiar with the whitewater kayaking programs that the other companies offer on the Ottawa River.

Gotta say the main is amazing! Everyone should run it. Have you ever run the Lost Channel?

How did you like the Antix on that water, Ken? I'm debating between in or a creeker as my first boat. Thanks - great content!

Great video as always Ken! I have been debating getting a whitewater kayak for a while, for the times when I don't feel like driving to the coast for sea kayaking, and this video just made my mind up for me. I found someone local selling a Dagger RPM Max, which at my weight I need the higher volume. I think it will be making its way home with me this week!

That's awesome Wayne! Once you start getting comfortable with the whitewater kayak, it will change how you look at things in all other boats! Enjoy! PS. I'm releasing a review on a great river running whitewater kayak on Saturday, that fit me great (6'2" & 195lbs). It's worth considering. Stay tuned. :)

@@PaddleTV I look forward to seeing it!
I ended up buying the Dagger, but the guy I bought it from said he was also listing a Jackson Super Hero, and for the price told me he was almost giving it away, so I bought that too! Went out looking to buy one kayak, and came home with two, plus another paddle lol.
One quick question, what paddles do you recommend for whitewater? With the kayaks I bought yesterday I also got a fiberglass Werner Powerhouse. It is well used though, and I don't know how much life it has left in it.

Great river for competent kayakers who have never done anything big.
that fault block topography allows for drops and then the lakes, as you're calling them.
A collection of humongous class 3 Rapids. Depending on levels of course.
once I got my ass kicked by Colosseum, I was good from then on out. "That wasn't so bad."
on the other hand we met a guy who lived close to the river who did Colosseum at something like 17 feet and never went back into the river.

Ha! Yes, the Ottawa River has the potential to humble people that don't give it the respect it deserves. I was one of those people about 30 years ago...
