- The Madawaska River in Ontario's Highlands is without a doubt one of the best rivers in the world to learn how to whitewater canoe or kayak. It boasts warm water, friendly rapids, and guaranteed flows throughout the summer. It's also home to the world's first whitewater canoe and kayak school - the Madawaska Kanu Center - which was started in 1969. Not surprisingly, nobody knows the Madawaska River better than Madawaska Kanu Center owner Claudia van Wijk. In this video, Claudia gives a rundown on everything you need to know to have a great paddling trip on the Madawaska River.

I like these guides a lot, they're going to come in handy.
Great to hear!
The 'Mad' is a great river and MKC does a fabulous job training paddlers of all skill levels. I've been going their since my newbie days in the early 80s . In recent years I've also renewed my Swift Water Rescue training with them
What an excellent overview of the river and region.
A great highlight of paddling opportunities on the mighty Madawaska River!
Those Creek Boats look like a blast. 🙂👍🛶
I live in Buffalo, NY and all these places in ON you've been showing recently is making me pray the border opens up sometime during the summer
Not long now I hope... I can't wait to be able to go on some paddling adventures on your side of the border again too!
We were camping with Adventure Schools (Washington DC) at the Ottawa ("Just turn left at the blue barn, eh?") and took a day trip up to the Mad. Only ran it once. It was perfect for teaching our somewhat competent students how to scout individual drops. BEAUTIFUL, fun, and way out there!
These guides are a blessing! Thank you Ken and MKC!
Glad you like them!
Great guide! Can't wait for summer :)
I started paddling a different madawaska in Maine usa
Another great guide. Thanks!
Thank you!
Hi From Ireland, you have a great team providing these Videos Ken. Very informative and I love your Enthusiasm. I am hooked, Love to visit at some stage. Fingers crossed
Hi George! Glad you're enjoying them! Hopefully this year will allow for more paddling trips for everyone... Cheers!
It is so disappointing that Ontario's best teaching river does not get more views :(
Thank you,very informative
Glad it was helpful!
Really enjoy your channel. Are you familiar with the Cossatot in Arkansas? Is that a place you might consider doing a video on?
I"m not familiar with the Cossatot. Another river to put on my list... :) There are too many, which is awesome.
From what I can tell from your channel, those of you in the Greater Ottawa area are blessed with many many incredible places that I most likely would not have learned about without your videos. I'm one of those strange guys that would rather paddle on a 100⁰F day than a 50⁰F day so Canada wasn't on my radar, but it is now.
@@joshinfwtx4506 If you like it hot, stick to July and August up here! :)
Whats going on there at the @5:55 mark. What are you wearing Ken? Is that what I think it is for, padding for your ankles when kneeling? If so that is genius and I want to know more. Also signed up for the MKC in May.
Ha! I'm busted! yes... I was dying after a full day of solo boating, and the fellow I was paddling with came up with this idea. :). You can see it in action in this video: th-cam.com/video/rJZnVbX281s/w-d-xo.html
