- The Arctic Philharmonic Orchestra - the most northerly professional orchestra of the world - performs the 'Trumpet Concerto in E flat major' by Joseph Haydn in The Sunday Morning Concert of Sunday the 11th of November 2018. The solo parts are played by the Venezualan trumpet player Pacho Flores, winner of the most important price for trumpet players there is - the Maurice André Award.

Though Haydn may have his own reason for his own composition
Somebody came along with a valved " trumpet and said it can play all these notes. Haydn tested this theory. Composed 1797, not performed until early 1800's and trumpet to play it not available until the 1820's. Trumpets don't usually have much to offer, so go for this one! Bless the Leonardo of music.

Nice piece. I’d be curious to know whether Haydn’s partition did have in the orchestra the valve trumpets that appear at 00:36? This concerto was supposed to show the first appearance of a trumpet as we know now. 😂

A beautiful performance with perhaps the best intonation I have heard from anybody. (And by anybody, I mean even folks like Herseth and Marsalis and yes, Andre.) And the higher trumpets (like E flat) can be a bit troublesome to get perfect intonation. Also interesting how he matched different instruments to the movements. I noticed a number of places where he played differently than written. Such as the last three notes of the 2nd movement. And some embellishments here and there, and especially altering the ending of the 3rd movement. I suppose opinions vary on this. But I think a composer's piece should be played as written. A cadenza is there for the artistic freedom.

I haven’t heard a better solo at the end of 1st mov since Wynton Marsalis... everything else was still great though 👍🏼

Very nice , but I was surprised to see that the trumpet had four pistons. I had never heard of that system before, and would love some explanations by specialists. Many thanks in advance !
Pacho Flores is playing an Eb trumpet, and I believe it is made by Stomvi (Spain). The 4th valve facilitates the playing of lower pitches(notice in the cadenza!) and in some cases alternate fingerings to help with intonation or ease of play. Typically the 4th valve is effectively the same as pressing down the 1st and 3rd valves together, 5 half steps down from pressing no valves. The design is not uncommon for trumpets pitched in the keys of Eb/D and piccolo trumpets pitched in the keys of A/Bb or C. There are also 4 valve Bb trumpets, C trumpets, flugelhorns... but they are not as commonly used. Great performance!

...he also played three horns, a different one for each movement. In the last movement he played a more conventional three valve instrument (maybe a C trumpet).
The first is a 4 valve Eb. Second is a cornet. Last horn is a standard 3 valve Eb.
@@sethprice3995 Interestingly, the cornet in the second movement is also a four valve. And I wonder what the large knobs are at the bottom of the first and fourth valves. And are those U.S. dime coins on the keys of the French horn player in the close up just before Pacho starts playing in the third movement?

i love the conducting of christian lindberg!!! he seems to have some serious fun here! Orchestra plays very good! the trumpet playing was ok. i personally don't like the cadenza and i'm missing the easyness, bright sound and charming esprit of the Eb trumpet here. if you want to sound and play like a Bb trumpet then take one!
pacho tiene un bello sonido...es muy estudioso y todo lo demas buena lectura etc etc...bella interpretacion okey okey.....pero es algo tosco para el estilo clasico....no es nada delicado sus notas son algo pesadas ...emite un brillo muy bueno en sus notas si...pero ese brillo no es muy estilizado... Nakariakov de niño ya era un ilustre representante de tan complejo estilo musical... los verdaderos conocedores no me dejaran mentir.
