Joy in the Morning - Pt Ulhas Kashalkar Sings Ramkali

  • Pt Ulhas Kashalkar is a connoisseurs' delight. A thinker and a traditionalist, his gayaki reflects immaculate ragadari with his own stamp of creative individualism. Having trained under Pt Gajananabuva Joshi he is identified as a Gwalior vocalist but considers himself to be a student of all Gharanas.
"I have had a variety of influences on my music. Even my Gurus brought a multiplicity of influences with them. I like great music from all gharanas. As a listener, I am also a student. But,my preferences are with individual musicians rather than gharanas. As such, I would be hard put to say which gharana's style dominates my own singing. I don't consciously try singing in any particular style. I am more concerned that my music should be pleasing, and communicate the mood of the raga."

We are lucky that these recordings exist so that they can used as reference-points... during debates about the futility of vocal calisthenics... the sudden propensity to hit the 'ati-taar-saptak-shadaj'... 'sargam-ising of taans' & many other gallery plays.
Thank you for this share. Have been hearing this for the last 7-8 years. I ought to have thanked you earlier.

Thats a great term. 'Sargamizing'. Its a growing tendency. In the popular imaginary classical music is fast getting associated with vocal acrobatics. In fact, these circus style singers are the ones who get the audiences and views online or otherwise. The raga suffers and the rasa to be embodied by the raga is entirely lost in such singing.

In that way, we should keep Vid Hirabai Barodekar's legendary Ramkali or the drut by Pt Mallikarjun Mansur in the first place.

@@ranjankumarghosal6758 I have not endeavoured to rank the recital of Pt Kashalkar at all. The two artists that you have cited have indeed recorded *magnificent* samples of this raag. Thanks for mentioning about them.
Also, a stunning 'nom-tom aalaap' & a drut khayal by Ustad Faiyyaaz Khan in a 78 rpm recording. Pt D V Paluskar has a very compelling a.i.r. recording as well.

So true. Its indeed a sad situation where frivolous attempts to wow the audience have become commonplace in the world of classical music. Pandit ji is perhaps the only remaining artist who still presents a raag in its shuddhata
