Chang peaked early. Amazing tenacity. He didn't have Sampras's size or talent but he gave 200% of what he had to work with. Will always admire this remarkable athlete.
LOL Pete Sampras was like what, 6' tall? You're talking like as if he was unnatural size and a huge giant.... 6' isn't that tall and pretty normal range, and especially for top level male athletes that's considered short.
Michael of course had a brilliant career given all the great players during the 80s and 90s. Despite almost ranked number 1 but fell short of a small margin by losing to Pete Sampras in 1996 US Open Finals, he surely had a special and memorable run in Men’s Tennis.
When Chang reached N°2, we must recall that the N°1 was an obscure player named Pete Sampras, or something like that. It was said by the top players that, many times in order to reach a final, or win a final, you had to go through Michael Chang, and that was a big obstacle to get over. Once Goran Ivanicevich said that, in order to win a point against Chang, you had to win it three times just to win it once. That ball was always coming back.

I had a great pleasure to once snap a photo with Michael on a hot summer day back in August 1996 at a Marine World/ Africa USA park in Vallejo, CA. While I took my two small kids to enjoy some safari rides at the park, I surprisingly spotted Michael in the crowd. By then I had closely followed his match ever since his French Open won in 1989. So I just asked him if he’d like to take a photo with me, and he didn’t even hesitate. That was exactly 26 years ago, we were quite young then, now we are older dudes 🤣. Such a great memory. Again thank you Michael !!
Wow. Michael Chang. That was a while back. I was a Lendl fan. And I didn't even watch the Chang/Lendl match, because I thought Lendl would wipe him off the court. I watched the final he played against Edberg. And I thought Edberg was going to beat him pretty easily, too, and didn't turn out that way. This was during the Tiananmen Square thingy in China, and Chang offered support to the Chinese students, during his speech. I always remember how when he had some ground to cover, you could hear him hustling to the ball. It was a distinct sound. Kinda a trademark of his. Chang was a LOT of fun to watch.
Such a great player and wonderful person! We lived in SO Cal at the time he was beginning to go higher in ranking, we watched his matches all the time!. One time we went to a restaurant, we got seated next to where Michael was sitting. My mom had her Bible with her and asked him to sign it and he did!
I was introduced to tennis when Micheal was at his peak, his contemporaries were Stitch, Agassi, Boris...Back then I was 11/12 years old. During his defeats, I blamed on his heights 😀😀😀 But he was a fighter.
There were many mistakes here but the most egregious one was that he did not declare anything on his "website" upon winning the French in 89'. That statement was made live during his speech after receiving the trophy.

The video said the war in 1948 was incorrect. Michael Chang was a tenacious tennis player, winning matches he had no business winning. There were some successful tennis players from China, e.g., Li Nah, Peng Shui, but not many male tennis players though. Michael blazed the trail, but sadly no one to take his mantle.

Michael Chang is not considered a Chinese player as he grew up and was trained in US. He also did not speak much Chinese. He was a miracle to all ethnic Chinese: he proved to all of us it could be done. Thanks to him so many of us started playing tennis.

He didn’t have to have a website the . He still thanked God for his achievements. He came to my church not long after his retirement and delivered a witness statement of his faith. He is deeply religious. I respect that

First one is "How was it that Carl was able to communicate freely in Chinese with Michael while he was serving as coach and during matches?" Seems like, since coaching is against the rules, Chang's contention that they were just practicing the language is pretty weak. Another, "At Christian outreach meetings at churches in England prior to Wimbledon, attended by numbers of Christian players, why was it that Michael never took the time to meet and pray with his fellow players"? You don't have to be very deeply into Christian thinking to understand that there are no superstars before God. And then there is, "How is it that long after I retired, I got calls from the Christian minister, whom a number of us brought out on tour long before Chang emerged, asking for additional funding after Chang was this hyper-financially-successful, very vocal about his faith"? Seems like the Chang wallet had a padlock on it, perhaps due to Mommy's running the business.
