dear muchi,

it’s been a month since we laid you to rest and i still can’t believe you’re gone. i keep waiting to wake up and find you peeking through our door or running down our tree to greet us. i hope you knew how much and how deeply we loved you. the gap you’ve left in my heart feels so big.
i’m so sorry i didn’t find you sooner. thank you for choosing our home to take your final breath. we wouldn’t have found your babies if you hadn’t left that message for us. all six of them are being cared for by some amazing rehabbers and growing up strong and energetic. they deserved your warmth and love. they fought just like you did and came to find us. you taught them so well. i am so proud of you.
you were a feisty, goofy, sweet girl who i looked forward to seeing. you taught me so much and filled my life with such joy. i remember the first day i met you - you were a shy, scruffy girl curious about what your brothers were up to. in less than a week, you were the alpha squirrel and built your home here. i am so happy you trusted us enough to make our home your territory. i am so honoured you let us into your life.
i named you muchi because of the way you gave smooches. i miss seeing you juggle your treats in your paws, hearing your little sniffs of disapproval, petting your soft fur, and feeling your grabby hands. you were such a gorgeous squirrel with a giant soul.
i wasn’t done loving you muchi. i wasn’t done telling you how much i adore you. i wasn’t done seeing you raise your next generation. i wasn’t done playing with you. i wasn’t done spoiling you. i wasn’t done loving you. i don’t think i’ll ever be.
i will take care of the piece of you that is left of me. i know you’ve always taken care of the piece of me i’ve left with you.
