  • Got a pile PC Gamer magazines from the late 90s and early 2000s, and they need to be placed into protective sleeves with backing. So that's what this is! Just a relaxed hour of solace with demo discs galore.

I think I'll be grabbing the resealable bags for the next batch, and then swapping these over into those, heh. Didn't realize these were non-adhesive flappy topped bags when I ordered them, and I really don't care for the idea of taping them shut since I'm going to be opening them repeatedly anyway. Live and learn!

They are fine though if you just put them on the shelf, they squeeze together and basically close up on their own, just not sealed. Thats how my mags are and no need for tape. You just fold them on the outside, not the inside.

For a gaming teenager from the Web 1.0 era, the PC Gamer CDs were legitimately hot ticket items. You'd keep every single CD and play every single demo, and if you got a good one, you'd play it 900 times, because the selection of games wasn't all that great and a $40 game was much more expensive then than a $60 is today... plus you had to get a ride to the store and buy a physical copy (which might or might not install or work properly on your system). I remember being crushed when I saved up for the first Rainbow Six without considering my puny onboard 2D/3D chip... that game sat in the jewel case for almost a year before I could spring for a Voodoo(2? 3?). Demos were like instant gratification and free as a bird on your doorstep every month.
I always thought it was strange that demos died just as pay-per-minute dial up was dying and DSL and cable internet were becoming prevalent. I assumed at the time that it would result in MORE demand for demos when people could download them for free in minutes instead of hours. Instead, the companies seemed to realize demos were more expensive than simply making a bunch of hype videos with pre-rendered gameplay and pushing THOSE using high-bandwidth web, and so they all went poof and nobody complained.

@@Rutherford_Inchworm_III Sometimes the demos were even better than the full game if only because the limited taste sent the imagination spinning, and then you get the full game and it doesn't live up to the heights you built up in your head from just playing the demo over and over!

@Artie Shelling In this case, no. I have plenty of single player games I can enjoy on my own but once in a while watching a youtuber playing a game and talks about it feels like I'm there in the same room and we are experiencing it together. When I was a kid we used to play single player games in turns, but this time I'm just there, listening to the person. By the way, I don't know why are you so baffled by this, today's kids ONLY watch others play games on YT, like Minecraft and such, streaming is booming. Are you new to the internetz?

I didn't get into gaming magazines until I was older and got my mom to use her Gamestop membership she had for us to get me _Game Informer_ magazines, but as a kid I had a free subscription to _Lego Magazine_ for years. Seeing all these mags remind me of how I would pour over my issues again and again months after they arrived, day dreaming of sets and all their possibilities. And then with _Game Informer_ , it kept me updated on upcoming games until we finally got internet.
On a related note, while I didn't have any gaming magazines for most of my childhood, I did have several _Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine_ Demo Discs for the PSX. My dad would occasionally buy them in bulk alongside full PSX games from yard sales and flea markets. I remember the excitement of him coming home and showing us what he got, and us trying each disc one by one to see if they worked and what they held.

That said, I did lose my first issue sometime in 95 or 96 and in spite of searching and searching, I never found it. But go figure, long after I tossed the bunch, that first issue I had turned back up and is now the only PCG I have.

The thing I love about old videogame magazines compared to online articles is that they offer a great snapshot back to a specific period in time. I take a trip down memory lane about once a year to peruse my old magazines, with memories of picking up the magazine from a newsagent or waiting by the post box for the next month's subscription to arrive. Reminiscing about all the games that blew up back in the day, and those that never lived up to the hype. Great stuff. Thanks for the video Clint.

The editorial work from Gary Whitta, Greg Vederman's hardware section, the jokes from Bill Harms...the terrific demo discs (still got the issue with the Command & Conquer GDI disc, and the DOS classic games edition!), the coverage over big developments in PC games and hardware (First review of a P3 gigahertz processor! Started with PC Gamer after PC Games became Electronic Entertainment with their plan to cover every platform. As a PC gamer I wasn't interested in buying a magazine I was only going to read a third of, if that (it didn't last long after the switch). PC Gamer saved the next couple decades until they switched whatever company they were using to mail out the subscriptions in Canada around 2008 and it became hit or miss whether it would show up in your mailbox. Kinda fell off after that, but still fun to read the old issues.

The Jan 2000 issue disc has sent me down a nostalgia trip that is hard to explain. Literally yesterday I was trying to find the name of "a hoverboard game" from a PcGamer demo disc, which I eventually found as trickstyle.
Today I'm watching this and finding the exact issue that contains all of my nostalgia, and am in mid-install of a VM to run this disc image from archive.org. The moment I saw the disc sleeve with the AOE2 cover, I immediately knew it was the demo disc that I haven't seen for almost 20 years.
Thanks for helping fulfill my nostalgia!
(also that Homeworld demo is amazing)

I'd grab a couple rolls of double sided tape. Put a little square in each corner on the back side so you don't have to worry about the magazine catching on the adhesive.. Great content as always!

When my older brother brought the Amiga 500 into the family he got a couple of the magazines that were popular at the time. They were covering mostly Commodore 64 and Amiga games, at least in those old issues he got. These magazines didn't have any attachments, I just liked to browse them through, drooling over the games I couldn't have. You see, we didn't have much connection to a community or something, my brother only knew 2 guys who had Amigas and they were not living close but it was a treat to visit them, it was like Christmas times two getting new games for the Amiga. Later when we switched to PC around 1999 I got into PC gaming and my interest shifted a bit. There was this cool monthly magazine that came with a CD attachment, filled with utility software, shareware games, windows themes but most importantly, awesome demos of the newest upcoming games! When my birthday came and I got that month's issue it was the best gift ever! I still have a couple of those magazines, I have the original Commodore/Amiga themed magazines, the very same ones, but sadly I didn't keep all those PC magazines. A couple of years ago a colleague who knew I was into video games came up to me and offered me the whole series or the Commodore/Amiga magazines he collected and kept them in pristine condition, it was amazing! He said I could do whatever I want to do with them, buy I'm keeping all of them, they are in the best condition! So yeah, I have my fare share of magazine obsession too... Lately I got back some of those PC magazines I had before too. And now I'm feeling the urge to buy more, but they are not cheap and some of the issues are rare.

Oh man, this was a nostalgia trip. I remember the issue with the Worms Armageddon disc was the first one I ever had of this magazine. I played the crap out of that demo back in the day. Never ended up getting the full PC version, just the GBC port.

Before I got rid of them when moving several times I think I had nearly complete collections of Next Generation Magazine and PC Accelerator. Next Generation was my favorite of all time. The thick cover stock and oddball page dimensions gave it such a premium feel. And they covered PC AND console gaming. Just the best.

I would not be opposed to a periodic 'Blerb' where you go through a magazine and the disc. Part of collecting at times, is sharing the experience (which of course is what you do!). So many memories, managed to get a few of these in NZ back in the day. Mosty the UK mags, but PC Gamer was a rare treat. That and the occasional Amiga related mag. :)

Man I miss gaming magazines so much. I understand why they have all but gotten phased out in favour of digital distribution and e-book format, but still it was so cool going home from school and picking up a new weekly or monthly issue with stuff to read, watch, and play

I remember a lot of the game magazines I use to get had a cardboard sheet inserted in the middle that way it didn’t cover up any of the art on the back or barcodes, the piece of cardboard sometimes had a demo disk glued to it.

Wow, I remember several of these magazines, and have, or have had, them, myself at one point or another. Honestly, if LGR were to make a video for each of these magazines, flipping through the magazines and reminisce over the various games, and tidbits, I would watch every one of those videoes, from start to finish.

About a year ago I threw all my old Computer Gaming Worlds, PC Gamers, etc into the recycling. So much space and weight they took up. Had hauled them from one home to another over the years, moved across country.
    No regrets.

PC Gamer, Boot / Maximum PC, and Crutchfield from the early 90's until 2002 is what i collected and read. And yes those PC Gamer discs were amazing and had your patches and maps / levels for Doom, Quake, and Descent.

Comic store employee here; what we did when we were boarding and bagging comics is bag the boards first then slide the comics in after. They do make Ashcan bags which could fit cdroms like you have there if you wanted to bag the cdroms then slip them in the other bag. You'd do that for longtime storage in case they would stick together, sometimes the print would bleed and get sticky over long time of storage.

@@x_voxelle_x The demo (and the full game) is very gory and since the demo came with the magazine a lot of kids was exposed to it which caused a stir, at least in Europe.

@@Dannykm How violent are we talking? Because I've seen the likes of Serious Sam (low poly gore and blood decals), Necrovision, and FEAR in with demo discs in the US, and I don't remember hearing any controversy over those.
In fact one magazine had FEAR's Alma on the cover, nude, but covered by the game's logo. Didn't hear a peep about it.

    • @Dannykm
      @Dannykm 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@x_voxelle_x If we're just talking the demo it features a man slicing woman's throat and another man shooting someone in the face with a shotgun. You'll also see some bodies at the crime scene(s). This is done in cartoon graphics of course but it still so violent that it stuck with me ever since.
The demo covers the first 10 minutes or so, so you can find footage on TH-cam if you want to see it.
